Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Old Maps Artstyle/Atmosphere

Is it just me, but I sometimes miss the look of the old maps, the atmosphere was much tighter, just watched some old videos and somehow, the old maps had a very specific feel, much eerier.

Sometimes there were more trees on the edge outside, which gave it a much denser experience, not like the maps now, where outside the actual map is sometimes just emptiness.

The colors and the light were simply much more beautiful.

it was actually just much darker and felt like a horror game, now it's kinda like "meh" looks cool but lost 90% of its atmosphere.

Love old dbd atmosphere, new daylight corn map style is not my thing. Old YT vids bring out my feels

I'm believe they're now making maps (Haddonfield and Garden of Joy) with Unreal Engine 5, so I expect to see reworks of old maps coming in the future. I'm on Series X and the older map graphic quality isn't great and less immersive, and I hope the devs know this. I know with UE5, there is a new lighting system which is why we are seeing newer maps have really dark areas. I'll bet they have to redo these maps like Haddonfield just to make them dark like this again. But you're right, and I guess they are trying to find the right balance of lighting with newer maps going forward. Those are just assumptions though. It'd be nice to know if the devs are planning on reworking them and have them confirm if they are using UE5's new illumination system to try and bring back the old atmosphere, because I too like it better than what we have now and I'm sure there are many others. The game doesn't have to be pitch black, but definitely a much darker atmosphere for sure.

In my opinion the old maps look bad honestly

Yes the last new maps seem to capture that old feel way better

I complelty agree. Old maps had such a more horror feel than a modern feel. I've played this game since huntress release and it is unfortunate that horror and rustic feel from the maps have turn to more modern and very bright.

There was also a thing called Depth of View- when you looked into the distance it had a blurry effect, making the game much more spooky.

I couldn't care less, id rather have atmosphere than perfect laboratory-cleaned balanced maps when there are unbalanced perks like DH inside the game xD

They definitely could've updated the graphics without touching the lighting and fog that made things otherworldly and murky.

you would get the same effect if BHVR updated the fog, but they are not done with realms.

I for one am frankly glad that they're gone and do not miss 'em one bit, especially Autohaven.
