Do we gain progress on the community challenges when they aren't equipped?

We currently have two new tomes that have just been released. The last part of the latest tome and the new event tome both provide us with a host of new challenges to do. I finished my first personal contribution fairly quickly. I have since moved on to other challenges but am unsure if I am continuing to contribute. If I need to have it equipped instead of other challenges, that seems like a big waste of time.

    When you reselect it, it will update with the new Community numbers.
