Spine Chill Change & Being Deaf
hey behavior, please leave Spine Chill alone. i am Deaf person who HEAVILY relies on spine chill due to no on screen indications unlike mobile which provides indication that a killer is nearby. spine chill made me Able enough to play but now im basically disabled when this change come to live.
i know you guys added color blind settings for those who need it but as a deaf person please accommodate to our issues as well.
with the spine chill change it will be very difficult for me to know if a killer is heading my way since i can't hear their heart beat. is there anything you guys can do to help people out who has a similar issue as i do? Thank you, i will hate to see myself stop playing a game ive been playing for years now.

I hope they add icons or something so people like you can play the game.

I get the vault speed nerf, but the LOS one I did not expect at all, hope they indeed keep spinechill without this LOS nonsense. Killers are already recieving lots of general buffs anyway.

Best advice I can give is to run stake out or premonition. Stake out gives a visual indication if you are in TR and premonition still works through walls
But yeah the devs should add a visual heartbeat like dbd mobile has imo

It's a nice thing that this change made people realize how dumb balancing game around sounds are, let's hope for killer accessibility change too.

For the record, there are some perks you can use to cover for not hearing the terror radius- Stake Out, Diversion, and Distortion all start activating when you're in the terror radius, so they provide the same value as Spine Chill in this regard.
It's not great to have to rely on perks for accessibility, but you do have some options left after the Spine Chill nerf. That's not an excuse for BHVR not to add in proper accessibility options, mind!

Exactly. I can get behind the Vault Speed-Nerf. But the rest...eh. Not so much.
In reality, they just nerfed Spine Chill to remove it from the Meta. This is their only reason.
Sad that the company which already has some history with lack of accessibility decides to make the game harder for people with hearing loss.Update: They made it useable again for people with hearing loss, good change.

Doesnt stack out stop working when it's maxed out on stacks?

Those perks are really not good for making up not hearing the terror radius. They all have max token amounts and fill up fairly quickly while in the killers terror radius not being seen. Distortion you'll only lose tokens if the killer uses aura reading. Stake Out you have to rely on skill checks popping up and not hitting a great skill check on your own to get rid of tokens. Diversion you end up constantly throwing pebbles to reset which will end up angering the killer because they'll think you're spamming noise notifications to be annoying.
While Spine Chill only worked when killer looks in your direction it not having tokens or a cool down is what made it actually be useful for those that are deaf/hearing impaired.

A visual heartbeat would be a way better sollution.
You shouldn't have to use a perk just to be able to play

They’ve bottled this massively.

Just as an information:
They just said on-stream that it will not work on Line of Sight, but it will work on Terror Radius. So if you would hear a Terror Radius, Spine Chill activates when the Killer is looking at you.
So stealth Killers which are Undetectable will not be affected by it, every other Killer will be affected, even if you dont have Line of Sight on them.

Much better change

I take it back, the change is really good lol. I’m an idiot.

As Aven said, they've listened to this feedback thankfully, and it'll be based on the terror radius when it goes live. Twitch clip here: https://clips.twitch.tv/UgliestToughTruffleMikeHogu-QpojWJfPh0AARUb5
Great change on this BHVR - appreciate this change.

will killers still have to crab walk once they are within terror radius of a surv?

Completely agree, Spine Chill could have been nerfed by adding a timer on it, like you have 10 seconds of Spine Chill then it goes into CD for 30 or something like that, this way the perk could still be useful albeit weaker. The way they nerfed it to the absolute ground is to remove it from the meta entirely, same as Iron Will.

If they have a Terror Radius, yes.
But Tier 1 Myers and Ghostface in Night Shroud for example can use their powers without Spine Chill activating.
1 -
Yes.
I dont think that the Nerf is needed at all. As I said, at max the Vault Speed.
But I am happy that they changed it back on Terror Radius to make it an option for people who have problems with hearing. This is important. Obviously they can do more (like a visual Terror Radius/Chase Indicator like on mobile), but at least they did not make it worse for people who relied on Spine Chill because of hearing problems.

Yes. Instead of needing to crabwalk 37 meters, most killers will only need to crabwalk 33 meters.

While I FULLY support accessibility, I think it is odd that they used "making killers crab walk" as reason to change it, but then changed it right back after accessibility issues were brought up.
"Spine Chill will now only activate if the Killer has a clear line of sight to the Survivor. This will remove the awkward counterplay where the Killer must look away to ensure a stealthy approach."
Crab walking was gone,.... then, back again before it was removed LUL

Yeah i'm gonna go ahead and say this was done because the change was pissing off survivor players and not because of accessibility. There's a mountain of issues in that department that get routinely ignored for both sides. It even goes directly counter to their reasoning for wanting to change the perk, its awkward counterplay.

Accessibility was actually brought up with the change:
Personally, I think a Perk is pointless when it only activates when the Killer has line of sight to the Survivor. Because at this point, the Killer knows where the Survivor is (so no point in hiding anymore) and the Survivor will also see the Killer (so no reason to use the Perk).
I also dont think that looking away is a difficult counter. You dont even need to look to the side, looking a bit to one side is enough to counter it and if the Survivor REALLY relies on Spine Chill, they will get hit (or even grabbed). The big issue was Myers and Ghostface, because their powers require them to look at the Survivor.
With making it based on Terror Radius, this is basically solved for Ghostface and Myers in Tier 1. (Tier 2 probably as well, since his TR is so small)

The change is purely down to accessibility.
Spine Chill will still be as we described in the Dev Update -however, there will be a visual indicator of the Terror Radius on the perk (hopefully in time for Live release). This is not a permanent solution, and we are looking into other accessibility options.

I mean, there's absolutely no consistency when there have been topics about important issues like epilepsy getting completely ignored so that flashlight macros wouldn't be addressed, and they didn't even do the bare minimum of an epilepsy warning screen after it was brought up. The large number of sound bugs that have existed for months over the years making audio tracking near impossible. FoV options for motionsick. If it actually influenced their decision then that's commendable, but the silence on the topic of accessability has always been pretty stark, even with the lackluster colorblind mode.
The LoS situation is just as awkward as the "having to approach at between a 45-90 degree angle" so as to avoid triggering it without getting any way of even knowing if anyone even has it. The perk itself is just kinda bad design with how the game currently works, honestly. Especially when Premonition is similar in its design, but more restricted. And this is from someone who uses the perk all the time for free information in solo que, its a very strong perk and the originally proposed changes would have removed half of what I use it for.

Can we get any of the other accessibility changes that people have been requesting for years?

We are looking at accessibility options in general...I do not have further information that I can share at this time however.

pardon me for being skeptical, but I honestly really do hope thats the case and I hope the results are helpful for those affected.

I mean, I have to agree that accessibility is a really poor topic when it comes to BHVR. And quite embarrasing in some aspects.
However, while they are slow in changing those things, at least they react when they make accessibility worse (like with the Spine Chill-Change).

I have something.
Maybe some dash icons above your head to let the deaf know when you're in the terror radius, or an icon at the top of the screen. Something like that. But then you'd have to make sure the game is in silent mode.
Otherwise, this feature could be exploited and manipulated by other players.
(I am not a painter sry)

Have you seen the interior of the large house on the new map? you might as well close your eyes on either side trying to go through it.

It does but you’ll be using stacks pretty regularly so it will generally be counting down. Still no reason to not have accessibility options for hard of hearing players
