I have never had any concerns with EAC because I don't touch the files.
But I have had some false positives over the years because DBD is not without bugs. Has EAC ever banned anyone for false positives? Can you unban someone who was not cheating but EAC said was cheating?
At least one person got banned for modifying those icons so use them at your own risk.
0 -
Can you tell me who? Because I HIGHLY doubt that it was just because of custom icons.
As with most games, the .ini and icon files aren't looked at by EAC.
0 -
People want custom icons in this game? Why?
0 -
Because they look amazing
I have looked it up. Dbd icon toolbox (which is the most used way to change the icons) is used by 20 THOUSAND people. The only source I found of someone being banned wa sa steam forum thread that clearly can't provide whether or not the person wa sonly using custom icons.
0 -
Yes they look amazing but there is always a risk when EAC updates and wants to check the UI files where the custom icons are and people that use them will probably get banned it doesn't matter that people have been using them for years and no one got banned, The future is what matters not the past. EAC can update in the future and check the files and even if the files are harmless it's still considered file modification.

Watch EAC ban 20k PC players without warning. Something tells me BHVR won't keep their "don't unban" mindset, as in physically unable to lose half their PC player base.
0 -
You are right but if there is a warning deleting the custom icons before the ban will help you not get banned or what?
0 -
EAC isn't omniscient to know what files were on your PC. If they issued a warning before, you could simply delete the files. But at most, BHVR will just code it so the files are reset every time you change them. After all, deleting the folder does change the icons to default.
So yes, realistically speaking, you will not get banned.
0 -
That's a good point, maybe I will keep using my custom icons, they're just so pretty!
0 -
I really want to use them again like that guy made me realise that is not bannable but I think I will just play safe and use the default ones
0 -
Yeah you know, it's just a mater of theory vs reality. In theory, can you get banned? Yeah, if EAC does something weird. But realistically? Never.
Can you win the lottery? Theoretically, yes. Realistically? Never.
0 -
You're right but then why do people say that if it was so people will get banned deleting the custom icons from the game files won't help you escape the ban?
0 -
Because if EAC bans you, it's permanent. You can, however, change the files BEFORE they make it bannable. But they won't. Ever. Half of the PC player base uses custom icons. Many streamers do. I remember even some devs doing it. There's just no way EAC will decide to start looking into a folder that has no files that bring a gameplay advantage, that half the PC playerbase changed.

I have seen some people say something about transparent perk icons that can give a little advantage, is this really a thing?
0 -
No. The perk icons only change the white part. The background and the pips are un-modifiable. You can change the white part to cover the background, thus allowing for packs like the one I use, but you can't make it transparent (as changing the white part to add transparency will simply make it so the transparent part gets covered by the background)

Some anticheats use a delayed/scheduled ban system. If you're caught for something, you're not immediately banned - instead it's scheduled for some point in the future. Might be 1 week, might be a month, who knows. The point of this is to make it harder for cheat developers to troubleshoot and to figure out exactly what update to their cheat caused the ban.
If you're caught, the decision is already made. You can remove the files/apps that caused the ban, you can uninstall the game, it doesn't matter - when the day comes, you get banned. I have no clue whatsoever if EAC does this though.
I also do find it very hard to believe they'd ban for icons as well. Anticheats know what to look for, and while there are ways for "pictures" to be pretty cheaty (like neon green retextures for visibility or in some cases even "transparent wall textures" and such), an anticheat is probably smart enough to know what files that has to be modified for there to be cause for concern. Is it possible EAC updates and goes bananas, *banning people even for having a "foreign" text document in a folder? Of course. Can I see it happening? Not really.
EDIT: And for the record, I don't use any custom content. I do not mean to encourage it, do not do it unless you feel fully comfortable with the risk no matter how small it is, as it must be considered a non-zero one.

A dev actually confirmed it right here in this thread, It's not me spreading some "misinformation". Any file modification in the game you do on your own risk, and in case you get banned, the devs will not help you. You can imagine whatever you want, this is not coming from me. Scroll back.

They did issue a warning. Modification of teh game files can have you banned. You have been warned, and no, nobody will need to warn you again:
"Any alteration of game files is done at your own risk. If EAC does trigger an automatic ban for these things, we will not be able to unban you."
That basically means, do it at your own risk, but probably those who actually care about their accounts shouldn't take your advice. It's just my opinion
0 -
Mandy is not a dev lol.
Yes you are spreading misinformation in the sense of telling the OP how they will get banned for using custom icons. They aren't bannable and period. They could become bannable, but that's you saying "you could have a plane crash on you while walking on the street, so don't walk on the street!"
0 -
"Those who care about their accounts" – there goes half the PC playerbase then my dude.
1 -
It would be stupid for EAC to ban 20k people at the same time and nobody will do anything
1 -
Altering the game files can always be bannable, nobody will give some sort of press release about when they ban for which altered file. You simply shouldn't do it, if that wasn't clear enough. But I guess it's me spreading missinformation... Don't worry many will give you advices about hacking and how you will never be banned for their smartass advices. It's just up to people to follow these advices or not.
Officially it is not supported, not recommended, and if you get banned the responsibility is yours, that's all. Otherwise you do whatever you like with your computer.
0 -
I mean both of you are right
0 -
So EAC will ban people for altering files, but the blatent hacking and cheating it does nothing about. Intereseting...
0 -
sure they do. That doesn't mean you will not meet them in games. Plus hackers have like 90 accounts each to burn from free giveaways. But some people probably have one account, they just enjoy the game and it's not expendable as it is for hackers. So... I mean I'm not gonna tell people what to do but the questions were answered here, and people can take whoever's advices they want
0 -
Not necessarily on topic, but I'll have to say I really noticed that you appear in every single thread with these Karen vibes. Whatever someone says, they are wrong.
Yeah, altering game files can be bannable. But why would the EAC devs decide to start verifying a folder that poses no risk, that HALF the PC population modified??? They are updating the service to stop hackers with their constant exploiting of breaches, not to stop innocent modifications.
As a final argument: we saw in the past how modification of game files that were widely used were simply made impossible by the devs. Modding and changing of inis are examples (although the later was thankfully reversed, seeing how many people relied on those hidden settings to make their game playable).
Final thing: a few months ago, they removed custom icons. They just wouldn't work. But when the people complained, they actually reverted it. Meaning that they, while officially can't support it as per the EULA, don't mind it at all. There are literally devs using custom icons lol.
0 -
Because they don't ban custom icons lol. In 6 years, the EAC hasn't checked the icons folder, and there is NO reason for it to start checking the folder.
0 -
Yeah yeah you lost me at "Karen vibes" it was obvious that you are just trying to sound smart here lol
Anyway I'm just saying, people can take your advices at their own risk. As I said people can come even with hacks and talk about how they were never banned, that doesn't mean that you wouldn't be. I gave the same advice Mandy did and explained it to my best knowledge. But if you know better, what can I say. Careful, some Karen or whoever might disagree with that nonsense :))
Let's just leave it at that.
This person opened a thread about adding custom icons is bannable or not. It was answered. You try to be smart about it... well by all means he can take your advice too and move on. I explained what I know about this. And I was never banned in any game. For a good reason. because I didn't listen to some smartass advices from random people and I have common sense.
0 -
Tbh, I also haven't been banned in any game. And I've been using custom icons in this game since 2017 and I also haven't been banned.
Difference between hacks and custom icons is that one is specifically against the EULA, NOT allowed by the devs and the reason EAC exists, while the other is an innocent modification of the game files, that brings no advantage, that the devs allow (not support/encourage, but allow) and that the EAC hasn't banned for since the launch of the game.
What your argument basically is is "if you are afraid of dying in a car accident, it's best to never get in one and never cross any crosswalks".
0 -
well keep finding excuses, but we already answered the questions for this topic, so it's pointless to argue something even Mandy answered. people can listen to you at their own risk, if they want, right? Let these questions be answered by someone who has more authority than you have. And it was.
Have a good game there.

Mandy said use it at your own risk. That doesn't mean that you will get banned for it. Mandy can't guarantee you anything, since it's not something specifically supported by BHVR.
Mandy told us that it is not bannable by BHVR, I come here and say that EAC doesn't look into the icons folder. It has no reason to and it will never have a reason to. Every other time a widely used game modification was no longer supported, BHVR themselves made it impossible to do it. Not EAC. The one time custom icons couldn't be used, BHVR reverted the change.
So in the end, Mandy can't guarantee anyone that EAC won't look into icons into the future, but as she said, BHVR doesn't care about them.

Being technical here, yes Community Management is classed as Game Dev. :)
As I've said on this thread - these things are use at your own risk. There really isn't anything further I can say on this.
2 -
end of story.
0 -
But again, "use at your own risk" means that BHVR doesn't ban for it, EAC doesn't currently ban for it, but it could in the future, right?
0 -
lol
whatever
0 -
I think too many people commented, all I wanted to know is if there is still a chance of me getting banned after deleting the custom icons.
0 -
So to finally answer that:
1. If for some obscure reason EAC banned you already, no. It's too late.
2. If it becomes bannable and you know of it, removing the icons prevents a ban.
1 -
Finally, thank you
0 -
btw do you know what veryfing the integrity of game files on steam actually does?
0 -
As the name calls, it looks on every file of your game and if any is corrupt/missing, it gets replaced.
0 -
ok thanks
