Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Does anyone remember red herring?? (Red Herring buff idea)

I feel like this perk is completely forgotten by everyone. No one uses it because the effects isn't great enough for its set up. So I have an idea to buff it.

So I say instead of going into a locker after activating to get the effect. You cause the effect by pressing a button. That would help remove some set up time. It probably won't make it too good but it's a good quality of life buff for it. What do you think?

Red Herring is one of those perks where it either does absolutely nothing, because the killer ignores the noise notification or you end up screwing a teammate who jumped on the gen you had red herring on.

I don't even think this buff would make it useful, because it's too highly dependent on the actions of others.

Yeah that possibility of screwing over my teammates seems like too big of a downside

I think they should change it to work similar to blast mine/wiretap. Something like.

    • After working on a generator for X seconds, Red Herring activates for X seconds.
    • While active, target a generator and press the active ability button. Doing so will trigger a loud noise notification for that generator.

This should make it more usable i think. Keeping solo queue in mind maybe something slightly different like:

    • After working on a generator for X seconds, Red Herring activates for X seconds.
    • While active, target a generator and press the active ability button. Doing so will highlight the generator in red for all survivors and trigger a loud noise notification for that generator after 10 seconds.

This way if a teammate is working the gen, they know it's about to pop and can go somewhere else. Or potentially use it to lure the killer over to them.

I like your idea better. I makes it good and doesn't hurt your teammates

I often paired Red Herring with Blast Mine to lure the killer to the gen without putting myself in danger (and risk the killer commiting to chase rather than kick).

Before the Blast Mine nerf, this was the only way for me to reliably make progress on archive challenges requiring me to blind/stun the killer. Blinding/stunning is out of my control; the killer has to let me do either of those (they can even choose never to kick gens).

Had a proposal for this perk as well:

upon entering a locker and if the perk is active, you can choose a gen that is currently not being worked on by any teammates (this works similar to how Freddy can choose to teleport to gens). With the active ability button you make a loud noise notification at that gen and if the gen was regressing the regression stops.

To activate the perk, it either goes on a timed cooldown or you can only choose gens you have actively worked on for more than 3s after using the perk the last time.

this way it has potential in getting info on which gens aren’t being worked on, can distract the killer with more control that the current state as you may choose between different gens and you can stop regression.

I once made this perk work like a charm. I had a Plague as a killer (unrelated to the story) and did my classical Blastmine/QuicknQuiet/HeadOn build together with Red Herring.

I nearly finished my gen when I heared the Plague coming along, so I threw a blast mine on my gen and made a run for the nearest gym. She followed me, but when I jumped into a locker Red Herring gave her a notification and she ran back to the 90% gen, saw no one there and kicked it, getting blasted by my mine. Afterwards she was totally confused and walked around the area for a good half minute while some distant gens were finished and the moment she gave up and left I emerged and finished the gen in a short time.

But that was like the ultimate perfect Red Herring situation and it never went off that smooth ever again.
