Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Anyone notice gens sound muffled lately?

Like I can work on a gen in the open with nothing near me and it sounds muffled like I'm inside a building or something. It happens when I look in any direction that isn't looking directly in front of me, but that's a problem since I need to look in more than 1 direction.

Yeah I had a gen on dead Dog do that to me but it would just be muffled while I was working on it.

I've noticed that myself all the time and figured out how it's triggered. It's mostly due how your camera is positioned. There's a sweet spot if you try to look around a corner wall it'll muffle the gen noise.

I don't like doing it much though I haven't figured out yet if it's just the gen or everything also gets muffled.

Yeah I noticed this. I usually find for me it's when there's obstacles around the gen and I turn my camera so I'm 'in' the obstacle, if that makes sense. It sucks because it feels like I can't use my senses at once. Either I position the camera so I can hear properly, but then I can't look around, or I look around and put up with the sound going in and out

Yeah, I definitely have noticed it. I assume it's some conflict between the gen sounds, and the void energy sounds.

I have noticed this. I noticed it on eryie of crows i was working on a gen and if i angled my camera so it was slightly over a low wall the gen got muffled. Its almost like the gen noises are done depending on your camera angle. if i had to guess the sound muffling is done when the noise has to pass through an object to get to your camera

(in this scenario imagine that ever survivor has a phsycial camera floating around you that you controll that the sound goes directly to therefore if the sound has to pass thru an object then it gets muffled to understand what i mean).

I recorded this game so I went back and confirmed that yes it did get muffled quick significatly. I will cut the video down and send it to behaviour as a bug report incase it is not intended.

Note to all. This is why you should record every single game (then delete the games you don't need). Not only does this allow you to identify bugs but also allows you to rewatch your game to see where you went wrong.

It happened very rarely before but now seems more common, Ive noticed it depends a lot on your camera angle, you move it around and sometimes it goes back to normal, go back to initial position and it gets muffled again.

It happens when something is obstructing the camera, sometimes even the gen itself.

Considering how long and how many variations there have been of this bug, without knowing which type of sound emission they use for each effect, I wouldn't have the first suggestion on how to fix it. That said, im sure the answer is in the UE4 documentation on sound attenuation methods somwehere:

If you ever wonder why footsteps suddenly don't make sound through walls, im almost positive this is the same issue and has been for years. I'm also fairly certain its related to why it happens with gens when you turn your camera so that a wall is between the gen and the camera, even if you're actively working on said gen.

Edit: looks like possibly something with how Attenuation Occlusion is set up? For OP's case in particular, it might have to do with Attenuation Listener Focus.

This is why I've been complaining about unreliable survivor footsteps, and -100% survivor sound perks for well over a year. Footsteps can go silent when survivors are behind the thinnest unenclosed wall. A survivor barely breaking line of sight because they are crouching, can muffle their breathing and grunts too.

It's also why finding boons is sometimes awful, because that noise can get muffled too.

Yeah I noticed this a few days ago when I was in a basement. The gen noise was all over the place as I was changing my camera angle. Like it would go from sounding as it should (very loud) to very muffled like it was behind a wall or far away.

The new cosmetics on gen block the audio on certain positions. Audio occlusion or what's called idk
