Killers "OP"? (to spare you time "too easy" + queue times + DCs)

So first of all i dont think killers are "OP". However considering it takes 20 sec to find a match as survivor and 5 - 10 minutes to find a killer match. (this happens pretty often and yes sometimes there are longer queues for survivor than killer but for the most part it seems to be killer)

If you go back a months and a few years it used to be long queues on survivor and short on killers (from my experience). I mean killer has literally become somewhat unplayable. (or not as "enjoyable") I run "weak" killers with meme builds and queue several minutes just to almost guarantee a win anyways. I cant play strong or fun killers either because guess what everyone DCs when they hear the twins sound or nurse screech^^

I PERSONALLY think killers are pretty balanced (maybe a little weak but soloQ somewhat adds up for that) Anyways looking at the queues im not really sure if the community thinks so...

So therefore my questions are:

Do you have long killer queues when you play? (Region and time can play a big part)

Do you think killer is way too easy, balanced or hard? (would prefer people who play killers opinion on their own games)

For those who play nurse, twins (possibly blight) do you face A SH** TON OF DCs?

We have relatively fast killer que times though we usually play night time usa when alot of swfs play too.(from casuals to swats)

Killers vary from each other but really for us matches are more determined by the map than anything. Balanced killer means jack all on unbalanced maps. (Sorry for going Abit off topic)

We don't face anymore DC's than normal (though it's a depressing amount. We aren't even that good with twins compared to other killers)

Well first off i can't give any information from my pov since i haven't played since last December.

But when you start a discussion of this kind and even name a few criteria yourself, why don't you give the necessary information yourself?

Which are: Platform+crossplay on/off, time of day you play and region.

Any discussion about queue times becomes useless without naming those, in my eyes and I have to nag for them EVERY TIME AGAIN.

Queue times as killer : 20 seconds to 2 min usually (France, low-to-mid mmr I'd guess)

Do I think killer is too easy : I think there are too many parameters to decisively say "Killer is too easy" or "Killer is too hard". I'd say it tends to be much easier than survivor when starting out, but that it becomes suddenly hard as your mmr catches up to you and puts you against more experienced survivors. Some killers have a more linear learning curve and will grow in skill organically without the game becoming too hard until you have a good handle on the killer's potential. Some others like Hag go from "you can f around a bit for a good while because most survivors you go against have no idea how your power works" to "you face god loopers and there's nothing you can do about it except get good" very abruptly.

I don't think one role is significantly easier or stronger than the other at average and up mmr. Some killers are definitely underpowered at high level, but the stats do show that they're as a whole not doing bad top 5% either. It's just that the gameplay is much less varied and both roles feel pushed back in a corner and forced to go meta.

DCs : I don't play Nurse or Twins or Blight, but I do main Legion and Hag and can attest to many DCs against the former and some DCs against the latter.

I think it might be your area. I live in US East and I get fairly quick Killer/Survivor queues; both normally less then a minute.

As killer I have two different types I play. I have some killers I only meme around on and as such my MMR is super low so I tend to get new players and killers I sweat on where I get much better players. In both cases my queue times are usually less then a minute.

As for difficulty, the meme games have babies that I could absolutely destroy if I wanted but I always mess around in those games and usually let most if not everyone go. I usually use these games to do challenges that don't relate to killing anyone.

For the try-hard games I tend to find maps have a big part in how well I do. Nemesis is my "main" for the most part and if I get coal tower or something I don't do too bad and while I'll still lose, I can usually point out my mistakes and the matches usually feel even enough.

On the other hand, if I get Disturbed Ward against people who even semi-know what they're doing, then it feels like an uphill battle. Of course I can still point out my mistakes and even win but there are also times where I feel I had little chance at my current skill level.

So really, it just depends on the circumstances. Overall I think Killer/Survivor are both fine though solo queue could use a buff with info. I tend to play in a 2-man and we win and lose about equally and the same for killer. I'm sure other people have different experiences but for me, I don't really have any major complaints on either end besides some minor buffs/nerfs in some places.

10 minutes sounds like hyperbole. I know that even watching tip top streamers, likely MMR capped, they can find a game in less time than that.

Even playing at the weird hours I do, the longest I've waited is...maybe 4 minutes.

Here's the issue though. It's not a balance thing. It's a psychology thing.

    • Survivors were ridiculously overpowered for years, especially in SWFs.
    • It's only recently that some of the biggest exploits and busted perks (spots on the map where you can't be picked up, pseudo-infinites, DH etc.) have been fixed.
    • BHVR have a history of balancing survivor and killer perks on a different standard.
    • Survivors have always been notoriously BM, to the point that teabagging from the exit gates is more normal than not.

So...yeah. Killers do tend to have a bit of a chip on their shoulders. It's not great, but it sort of is what it is.

I haven't had a 5+ minute queue in a long time (pre-6.1.0); 2 or 3 minutes is the high end these days. For either side.

I play in the Western US, crossplay on, somewhere mid evening to late night/early morning (7:00 PM - 3:00 AM MST), and queue times just aren't an issue for me at all. On average, less than a minute for either.

Compared to how they've been in the past they are a little longer on the killer side, much shorter on the surv side; on balance, they're the best they've ever been.

I think the game is fairly balanced* (though solo queue needs help), though perception of balance is never really there for people who only play one side or the other. I think killer is stronger than it had been for a long time prior to 6.1.0, but not OP by any means (outside of the usual suspects - Nurse/Blight), just that the game balance had been skewed pretty hard toward survivor for a long while, and the shift toward balance has been jarring for some.

*fairly balanced in the context of DbD's history; it's never going to be objectively balanced, nor do I think it can be. If balance is what people are looking for, they would do well to look elsewhere.

My Killer queues are short to nearly instant but I also play Survivor earlier in the day and Killer later on at night (this timing coincides with the incentives).

Things are more balanced now whereas it was very survivor sided before with pre 6.1 DH and release CoH. Eruption is an issue though and needs tweaking.

I get a lot more DCs on Plague, Trickster, Myers and Pinhead than I get on Nurse, Twins or Blight. Nurse, Twins and Blight see as many DCs as everyone else for me while the ones I mentioned above see a lot more (Plague especially).

Dc’s don’t necessarily equate to balance problems, it could literally just be entitlement. This is confusing causation with correlation. If anything I think survivor is still way too easy compared to killer at the high level. My killer queues are actually instant myself, so what you’re experiencing may just be your zone.

I play on western Europe, for me there used to be long Killer queues but lately they have been shortening to around 1-2 minutes (my guess is Killers are starting to quit the game because queues+DCs after the influx after 6.1).

I think Killer is easier to be easier, you can pick Nurse, put some slowdown and there isnt much anyone can do against you, for Survivors to be easy you have to be on a 3 or 4SWF, all members have to be very good, perks must be meta, a normal map and you are going to have an easier time against a lot of Killers but then a Nurse appears and wrecks you. In my opinion the conditions for Killer to be easy are easier to achieve than for Survivors. I think most Killers are balanced (except Nurse, Blight and Spirit) and the biggest problem is map disparity.

I play Myers and I rarely see DCs and/or salt, I believe around half DCs I see are honest ones like game crashing, internet going off or stuff like that because they seem pretty random to be people quitting (like someone who isnt being chased DCing in a match thats still contested).

The logic in this community is beyond anything you can believe lmao...

"Queues for the Side that only has1 Player are longer for the Side with 4 Players so there must be an imbalance in Players" ... Yeah sure, well combined Sherlock...

Oh and Survivors are not playing the Game and Quit bcs they lose, so better nerf the Killers that are quite literally getting destroyed in at least decent lobbies... Not even talking about broken SWF xD

This is beyond any reasonal discussion... Nearly everytime a Problem gets adressed, its always "Nerf Killers/Killer Perks"...

    Ridiculous!

Killer is easy, if the Survivors dont play together.

Instead of making Killer Gameplay harder and harder, maybe we should make "Playing together" a bit easier?

I dont really get why everyone implicates that Killer is "Stronger" than survivor? If that was the Case, SWF couldnt be busted...

Queue times can be instant or 5 minutes. Really depends on the day and time.

The difficulty of killer is going to be perceived differently for everyone. I think it's crazy easy right now given how loose matchmaking is. But I have 4000+ hrs and comp experience. I wish I could get sweaty SWFs every game because otherwise killer is a snooze fest. It's all relative though. Killer was really hard for me when I had 500 hours.

Yes, people d/c a lot against Nurse. You can pretty much guarantee it if you hit someone within your first 2 blinks of the game. Tip: run away from the killer when the TR is rapidly growing.

Minute long killer queues? Absolutely not. I never wait for longer than maybe twenty seconds. It used to be during the day it could take several minutes but that no longer seems to be the case.

I thought i made it clear either way i spend 2 - 5min on average in the killer queue when it used to be like 20 sec (unless a new chapter dropped)

i play on utc+1, Europe often between 15 - 20, i also play with crossplay on but i do think almost everyone does so i didnt really think about that (and its on by deafault i think?).

    Thanks!

As you said i also think its crazy easy. While the game is more "balanced" now at least on paper i still think that with very strong killers or even mid tier killers and perks that you still won more than you lost (back in the days like 2017 - 2021).

But if you're looking at the weaker killers like bubba, clown and those ones its more fun and enjoyable to play as you dont have to sweat but i would love more SWFs as you said and getting my ass beaten. I mean i still had fun back in the days when i lost and when i won it felt a little more rewarding now its more like "yea whatever"

  • FlameGNG
    FlameGNG Member Posts: 746

Well yes 10 minutes was a little over exaggerating but its still minutes and not seconds we're talking about 2 - 5 minutes. However i had two 10 minutes queues yesterday...

Were surviors ridiculously overpowered? Well i dont really think so. I mean yes if you go back to 2016 - 2019 sure but 2020 2021 was much better. Its way more balanced now the problem i think is lack of communication. If they manage to get the communication right they could even nerf survivors a little more. With communication i dont necessairly mean voice chat it can be as little as seeing when a teammate is on a gen (the HUD) or healing. Something that gives you a rough idea if you should go for the save or anyone else.

Yes its hard to balance because if you buff one thing you might affect every other killer in the game even thos who dont need it yes.

the BM well. I dont see that many teabags. i also miss the clicky clickys becuase it was so fun to ignore them and watch them try their best to get a chase :D. But i'd say that survivors BM more than killer however BMing as a killer is more "toxic" depedning on how you do it i mean teabagging at the exit gate whatever chase them out hitting someone on the hook well... Slugging them for 4 minutes tho thats just a waste fo your and their time

  • FlameGNG
    FlameGNG Member Posts: 746

well if you played during 2016 - 2021 killer queues were way way faster than survivor.

I didnt say that we should nerf killer because survivors quit... I just asked if people had many DCs. Talking about broken SWFs... Well unfortunately i dont have many SWFs atleast not good ones they avg like 5 6 hours sure but i still miss those 12k hour dudes with the same skin. But i guess we all look on it different i mean i used to play only strong killers and now i dont really do that i do also have a few thousand hours on killer so ^^.

Yea i know i didnt really say that it was becuase they were unbalanced. But i mean more survivors think nurse is more "unfun" or hard to go against than lets say clown. The one exception is legion i havent played much legion but well when i play against him peopel DC because well i assume they find mending 20 times boring :)

Yea thats what i was wondering if it was my zone and time of the day. Anyways thanks for the answer!

    Blueberry Member Posts: 14,472

I never really understand why people dc against Legion. I think people vastly over exaggerate how much they're mending (i mend in a legion match maybe 5 times tops?) and are playing wrong against them (trying to heal).

I started playing in early 2020 (I think - Pyramid Head was coming out) and survivors were absolutely, brokenly overpowered far beyond anything right now. I mean, off the top of my head:

    • OoO gave any SWF permanent wallhacks.
    • DS was basically an extra life.
    • Any lobby with more than 1 key was an automatic 'nope'.
    • Every map had 2 or 3 spots at least where a survivor couldn't be picked up (but could still be healed), and you'd have to either slug camp them or give up, because they'd do this deliberately, all the time.
    • A few maps had spots where survivors could get and be unhittable.
    • Pseudo-infinites, especially on Haddonfield and Badham houses.

It was awful to be a killer, which is why killer queues...honestly, until recently, were always instant.

Yeah, 'clicky clicky' was fun unless you had even mild photosensitivity issues and had to stop playing because of the migraine.

Slugging...whatever. It's being changed soon, and yes it's annoying. But at least you can just grab a coffee, it's not like 2020 where a survivor could essentially prolong the game forever because they'd found a spot where you couldn't hit them and two people climbed in and went AFK.

Legion is tedious to face, but I never even feel the urge to DC, because I also feel like I'm almost certainly going to escape in the end. Legion sucks.

Yeah, I started playing in late 2019, and survs definitively had the upper hand, for all the reasons you stated and more.

Which is why as you say killer queue times were instant (and surv times were often brutally long). 6.1.0 really just moved things to a relatively balanced state and the queue times normalized quite a bit.

And even though things are more balanced now in terms of power, survivor is still the less stressful, more fun, chill role, which keeps the majority of players playing surv. That and the fact the a good chunk of the player base are just locked in to their preferred role and will never change.

    1. My queue times as killers are completely dependent on the daytime. My shortest are at night (like 20 seconds average) while my longest are on middays (4-5 minutes)
    2. The balancing question surrounds around different factors. The killer you pick, the map, your loadout and the survivors. A trapper will have significantly more trouble to 4k in comparison to the Nurse if the player knows how to play these killers. Some maps are huge with a ton of pallets (temple of purgation) others are very small and have a guaranteed 3-gen setup (dead dawg saloon). You can bring a full gen regression loadout and will have a significantly easier time getting a 4k or you can just bring a niche loadout and hop to get value out of your perks. And ofc SoloQ survivors that wants to do achievements/tomes are way easier to handle than 4 man SWF with a full gen loadout. I believe that the survivor is stronger than killer but only if they work together which is hard in SoloQ because you have almost no tools to communicate while SWF can call out everything and coordinate with no trouble at all.
    3. I am a Nurse main and I can say that yes I have DC's but it's not really more than on any other killer. People seem to exaggerate when it comes to the Nurse as if 50% of all survivors DC. I only have DC's as killer once every 10 matches (funnily enough I face DC's far more often in SoloQ than in my Nurse matches) but I also play with no perks and addons because I just enjoy playing her power (despite having every perk on her). Most people are not even mad in the post game chat. Only a few call me a Nurse "abuser".
