Game feels like it's gotten a lot worse these past months
First of all, I mainly play killer however my picks are generally considered low to mid tier at best. I genuinely try to have fun, meta perks like Eruption aren't even part of my build(s). However I see myself bringing NOED more and more often these days just to stand a chance against the seemingly supershort gentimes in this game.
Earlier today I had two gens pop almost simultaneously, and it occured twice during that match. Basically the first & second and fourth and fifth gen were finished at neckbreaking speed. The survivors didn't even bring toolboxes into the trial.
Whenever I try to play someone like Myers, Sadako, Trapper or Knight I get mercilessly outplayed at every single opportunity. Mindgames hardly seem to matter since I'm munching through pallets right and left (or survivors simply hold W if I'm playing as the Knight) and my hook-times are downright abyssmal. It usually takes me 3-4 gens to secure my first hook, at that time around half of the pallets are probably gone and I'm stuck with choosing between camping or risking a zero kill outcome.
Chases in this game aren't fun, at least not for killers. They take too long, I feel cheated whenever a survivor pops Dead Hard right at a pallet and flashlight saves (which have been buffed by the way) still drive me crazy from time to time. Franklin's Demise has gradually become a mandatory pick for me. No matter how much I endure, the matchmaking doesn't seem to adapt. I still get playergroups with extremely high prestige levels with the frequent SWF group in between.
I'm seriously concerned about the devs' intention to buff Solo Queue. Considering how extremely merciless the game already is I fear it's only going to make things harder for m1 killer enjoyers like me who have to struggle for every single down/hook. I feel stress like in no other game whenever I queue up as a killer and it's not a good sign for the direction this game is heading.
Especially the new/reworked maps like Garden of Joy/Pain, Haddonfield (aka Had-No-Fun) and Eyrie of Crows make me consider leaving the trial before the match has actually begun. Their mainbuildings feature extremely strong loops which will easily secure survivors a couple of gens if the killer should commit to them.
Midwich is another dreadful experience of mine since survivors simply can hold W on these neverending hallways while you're forced to follow them with no way to speed up the process. At least not with the killers I usually play.
DbD usually leaves me in a worse mood than I usually was before I booted up the game, this alone should tell how miserable the experience is for me.

Seems like a skill issue.
Maybe you're boosted because of tryharding.
If chases aren't fun for you then maybe play survivor. Or maybe try a different game for some time, it will do you good.

"Maybe you're boosted because of tryharding."
OP said he is trying to secure 1 kill each match. This doesn’t sound like tryharding.
To OP : try to focus more on gens (where survivors are) and less on pallets (at least not on pallets where there are no gens). If you can, protect a 4gens / 3gens (with deadlock, also corrupt if you need) and go for the unhooker.

Its a bad idea to chase certain survivors, you will always throw your match if you do that. That doesn't mean you shouldn't, but your only real way to win the chase, which people here call mindgame, is most similar to a coin toss outcome. Which doesn't strike me as game, it strikes me as random. What I find is if the tactics involved in the game don't seem fun at the moment, just ignore them and chase the survivors you want to chase in the loops you want to learn about, with the killer that you like playing. For me, if I know I'm facing a SWF and I don't want to camp 3 gens. I just don't. They can win, I'll chase their designated looper around, and take the occasional swipe at one of their designated generator repair people.
Take all the time in the world to lose the match and focus on the skills you want to build because you like using them. Some of the killers are cool with neat abilities, I find fun in using those, even if they are not competitive in light of what the opponent is allowed to do.

Learn to give up on chases and find other targets. If that one survivor has been running you for 40sec without getting hit, they'll probably have at least 40 more (maybe even 80 more with a skillful DH), and that's a lot of time spent on gens for the others.
If the survivor is goading you with emotes or teabags, never pay attention to them. They want to be chased, and chances are they will keep hovering around you and not be on gens even if you find yourself another target. (My favorite instance of this being an Ace I faced the other day, phenomenal looper, spend a lot of the game moonwalking in the backgrpund while I was chasing other people, instead of preventing the 3gen that got his teammates killed eventually)
If you like playing them, Legion is super good at switching targets and passive slowdown. If you're tired of that one survivor you can't get down, Frenzy a little, and the locations of all 3 others are revealed to you. =)

I do give up on chases pre-emptively when I see a survivor run off to a strong loop/safe structure however I can't keep doing this while the gens are popping one after another. I had a match at Garden of Joy/Pain end with literally zero hooks and only 9000 bp because the survivors kept abusing the map. There's no winning if all of the survivors are privy to unfair tactics and map techs.
I was trying a scourge hook heavy build and got zero value out of that. Just because the supposed weak link in that team didn't exist. Matchmaking keeps failing me and the abyssmal map balance is pretty much putting the nail in my coffin.

That build isn't that bad. You've got a lot of slowdown and some info but it doesn't really work with Trapper.
You have no early game slowdown, so you don't have any time to set up and you have no chase perks, so without set up you're just playing a powerless killer. Honestly if you want to win, don't bother playing Trapper. Or at least use Corrupt Intervention if you do play him.
Your build would work better on someone with some mobility like Wraith, Oni, or Blight.

Things have gotten a lil rough for m1 killers in the current meta. The best way around this is to be unpredictable. Survivors expect killers to play a certain way, so when you change up on em it really gets in their head. You're in a chase thats not goin well and you see a surv on the nearby gen? Act like you're chasin past em then at the last second, hit the gen jockey. Down em. Kicked a gen and you know somebodys nearby? Start to walk away then double back quick when you think they're movin on the gen. Works really well if you have cover to break LoS. Be erratic. Force them to make mistakes. Punish overly altruistic players. If they're usin a boon, leave it up. When somebody needs a heal you know exactly where to find em. The old ways don't always work anymore. Think like a survivor and invade their safe spaces. Takes some practice, but it's highly effective against stronger players that are set in their ways.

I haven't really noticed much as Killer.
Less gens getting done, that's for sure.
As Survivor, uh, that's also true.

Trapper with no early slowdown is extremely risky. You literally can't set up and have no power. I used to play that way with Hag, another killer who needs strong setup, and after a while you just can't keep up.
My best advice would be to bring Corrupt or Deadlock (or both) and to web- I mean, heavily trap an area with 3-4 gens to make it difficult getting things done there.
Trapper can have really good games, I know when I'm facing him I become super paranoid for the next 3 games because I never expect it and don't think to watch where I'm running.

Um... maybe try playing better killers? That's what i did. Yes it's sad to not play favourite characters but if they are not fun anymore there is no point of playing them. Nowadays i play Dredge, Legion, and Mastermind. They are decently strong but they are also fairly traditional which i enjoy.

That therein lies the problem with DBD. If a killer is incapable of being effective and holding their own, then it goes to show that something needs to change, and that the killer most likely needs a buff.
You're absolutely right that it sucks not being able to play the Killers that you want to play, and sadly the only answer is to play better killers because killer design has gotten a lot better throughout the years, but in the current meta m1 killers are at a huge disadvantage, and something does need to change.

It's a problem with most online games i play. Overwatch has amazing characters but playing the same one all the time is just not viable and teammates will hate you for it. Also i think gun based fps games, they have gun tier lists and stuff.
Just the nature of live games i suppose you must adapt your playing choices to the changes.

Stop trying to be some kind of killer saint. You don't get any points for that.
Use eruption or CoB (just one at first) if you have them. Maybe both if you're still struggling.
Give yourself a leg up.
Then once you get more confident or better or whatever it is, stop using them.
I run eruption a fair amount (don't own Sadako) but most of the time don't even end up utilizing it.
I never try hard as killer though so I don't think my MMR is that high, my advice may not be worth much.

I have been playing a lot of Bubba with no gen defense or just pain res, and even with the instadown pressure its rough to keep up with the gens. So yea, if you play ######### m1 killers like freddy, trapper, without any gen defense you will most likely lose, unless you get some good trap snowball going.

You should try a few different builds for a few matches and see if anything feels better. Trapper in particular has some weaknesses early game with set up time, and I saw someone mention corrupt intervention to help with that.
You also mentioned long chases. This can happen as a 'basic m1' killer depending on the map and rng, but you can also try chase perks that might help. Bamboozle, blood favor, or even the enduring/spirit fury combo can help with different aspects of chases. Even info perks like I'm all ears can cut down on mind games in certain situations.
I'm also not sure how you're playing trapper exactly, but I do recommend keeping at least one trap in your hand to use in chases. Even if you only 'fake' placing it at a pallet of window, it can get survivors to move on to a potentially weaker area of the map.
Basement is also your friend, though burning a basement offering usually shows your hand to survivors. At least being aware of it's location in case you get an opportunity is always good.
I do ok with trapper, but I play him very little right now. Some games though, if I find a clearly good survivor, I'll chase them for practice. It's not going to win me that match, and I recognize that, but I've gotten better at chasing in general by doing that occasionally. I've also found that the occasional 'practice game' keeps me from tilting as much too, cause I'm consciously practicing and not sweating as hard to outright win the whole match.

I don't enjoy Genlock meta, making solo Q a prolonged chore.
I don't enjoy half of my killer games having DCs/people giving up for little to no reason.
I don't enjoy map offerings, of which I see constantly
And finally, most important of all - I don't enjoy BHVR releasing unfinished half baked content riddled with bugs and season locking cosmetics for no reason.
This is why I feel like the game is in a bad state, right now.
I can't even take solace in the fact that Eyrie of Crows might finally be getting changed because it's 1 horrible map of many. Cowshed probably won't be changed, nor will any of the Badham maps.

Wait, they're actually considering changing the godforsaken Artist map? Is there a source for that?

Latest BHVR survey had multiple questions about Eyrie of Crows.
And in the Solo Q buff screenshot they posted on Twitter, many people noticed that the Eyrie main building breakable wall was in a different place to it's usual spot, indicating that maybe they are messing with the layout behind the scenes
Like I said it's good to see, but Eyrie is 1 awful map of many and given how long it takes them to "fix" maps (RPD wasn't fixed), I'm not super optimistic.
