Is spies from the shadows a fun perk to use?
Wanted to try something new, even if its not efficient.

It can be interesting. No one really expects it nowadays so it could be a nice little tricky thing to throw at the Survivors.
I wouldn't say it's the best tracking perk in the game, but most survivors just sprint around now. Spies might have a lot of usage for you in today's meta.2 -

It get really irritating after bit. Too many random notifications that don't really help a lot unless you are already pretty close. It doesn't even tirgger all that reliably for something that only gives a general location. Whispers, funnily enough, is way more consistent.Agreed, since half the time you get nonsense noises that sound like whispers and other times the crows randomly make noises when nothings around.

Even if it activates on the other side of the map, it lets you know someone is there. You can have better positioning based on the survivors general locations.1

I’d use whispers if you want to find survivors spies is pretty bad in my opinion compared to other survivor finding perks

Better yet play Nurse and roll face across keyboard, profit.

More than once, been running into really highly ranked and highly nurses lately. Although playing in the early am when I get rank 10 and lower fellow survivors doesn't help either.

I've actually tried to actively use this perk in some recent killer builds, but it's hard to recommend it for me. Some games it can proc pretty frequently and be nice to have, others you'll see a proc once or twice, and still many others you can never see it get any use the entire match.
I think this lack of consistency is due to a combination of the map used, crow placement, RNG, and its effect range. Crow placement is an especially big issue as I feel like 70% of crows are located on the edge of the map, making it useless if you aren't combing the edges. Another issue is that it only procs within 36m, which is just outside the standard 32m terror radius range. This is an issue because if people are in your terror radius they're probably crouch walking with urban or staying relatively still to avoid you, which will also significantly lower the chances that crows go off even if there's some around. Then there's the RNG aspect of Spies, which means even if someone is careless and scares the crows away, the perk might not even proc regardless.
It's just so unreliable now and not really that fun imo.
