Can I read the Tome stories randomly?

Let's say I want to start with Tome 14 story. Can I do that or does it need to be all in order starting from Tome 1? They're pretty damn long, I stopped at tome 8.

Another thing: are challenges tied to the tome stories?

    Every tome has 3 or more stories tied to it. Certain challenges (Master Challenges) within a tome unlock entries to said story. You'll have to unlock all entries if you want the full story.

    You can unlock stories out of order, but you won't get rift fragments from progressing through a previous tome. When hovering over a Master Challenge, you can see which story it will unlock an entry for. These entries are unlocked in order, though it doesn't matter which order you do the challenges in.
