ENCOURAGEMENT POST FOR THE DEVS (there's some touching, I mean touching words in here)
I know that this post might not ever actually be read by a dev or any BHVR personnel. I know there's more chance of Santa Claus reading this post than that (or at least, he would have, if it weren't for the incident and that restraining order he has on me - kind of hypocritical of him, to be honest, since it's his signature move but apparently if someone else goes down _his _chimney it's "breaking and entering"... but I digress).
Even though I know this, I will write this post as if "The Devs" will be reading it. Consider it an open letter addressed to you, BHVR.
...So, rough day, huh? Here, let me give you one on the house (I'm sorry, I find it easy to pretend that I'm a bartender like in the movies. Also in this metaphor I kind of look like Scarlet Johansen but I have Sam Elliot's voice and warm wisdom - just go with it and feel free to enjoy a good mug of coffee while you read this).
Yeah, it's been a little rough in the Fog lately. The new Chapter came out and you guys know what happens every chapter - half the community screams the new Killer is OP, the other half screams the new Killer is weaker than a restraining order drafted by an elf... What? oh, don't worry about that metaphor.
Anyway, while the forums are drowning with threads suggesting countless changes to the character you've worked on like a team of blacksmiths tirelessly trying to forge a masterwork blade, you also see streams and videos showing the many, many, many, many bugs and problems that riddle this patch like ravenous coyotes in a moonless night (sorry, the Sam Elliot vibe took over for a minute).
People get stuck on invisible walls, framerate drops, freeze-frames, Leatherface gets stunned after he chainsaws, Trapper can't pick people out of traps, Nurse's screen doesn't darken when she's fatigued, Wraith is immune to flashlight burn, Claudette is invisible, corn is total cover, Decisive Strike is still in the game, Rank 15's are getting matched against Rank 1's, if they're getting matched at all...
All this along with everything else the patch has been doing to the game, it's almost like the game decided to have a Holiday Party and almost every part of it got drunk and went completely insane.
The Sound must have drunk every bottle in the house and is currently dancing on the table, and you can see something that looks like sugar under its nose - footsteps are silent again, the occlusion is back with a vengeance, some sounds seem to have been discarded completely and are lying around all over the house (chainsaws are now silent sometimes, so are unhooks, footsteps again etc), others got boosted to 4000%.
Graphics seems to have gotten the lion's share of whatever sugary goodness Sound introduced them to and they're now running around, talking a mile a minute while "rearranging" the furniture and cranking every light to max.
In short, it's an animal house in here.
Plus, everyone hates The Legion. From here to Timbuktu people are making threads "worst Killer ever", "zero counterplay". Renowned, long-time streamers of this game are saying things like "playing against [The Legion] is like nails on chalkboard".
Posts are getting angrier, accusations are flying, barbs are thrown, gloves come off - and you're everybody's villain right now.
Survivors and Killers alike are breaking out the torches and the pitchforks.
All in all, you're not having the easiest of times right now, BHVR. Have another drink? (again, coffee's fine).
Which is why I wanted to take this moment and let you know something. Now, I don't have any mystical wisdom to share (wink), but I do have one thing to tell you:
I love you.
That's right.
I, Scarlet Johansen-Looking Sam Elliot Pretend-Bartender, love you.
Things are tough right now. There's a lot to be done and it's on you to do it, but you're not alone - even out here in the Fog.
I believe in you, BHVR. I've been with DBD for two years this month and I've never put as many hours into a video game as I have into Dead by Daylight. A big part of that is that I believe you care about this game. I'm not naive, I know you're a business and this is a product - but I believe you put a lot of love and care into this product, you proved that over recent months, ever since you bought the rights this game has only been improving. We've had our ups and downs, but you made sure to elevate those downs and drag this game up.
We've been in this situation before - we've had horrific, game-breaking bugs riddle it just as they do now. Worse, in fact. It came to the point where your name became synonymous with recurring, hilarious bugs - no, that wasn't a cheap shot, I mean that despite this, you've always fixed those bugs.
But you have to remember, part of the reason I support you over all other video game companies is that most companies don't give a good nickel about what their community thinks. I've been to video games that are still riddled with the same horrific bugs they've had since the very beginning, from years ago. I've seen games outright abandoned not a minute after launch. But I like to believe you guys are different.
So I think if you put a little of that trust and love that some folk like myself place in you, and put it into the community, then there's no bug, no balance-breakage, no horrific issue that you can't tackle.... Well, despite your habit of workarounds, Perk band-aid solutions, messy mechanics and things relying on other things while they don't work with other things the way that things want to work. Again, not a cheap shot - but honesty is a hand that does have a back, too. Again, not a cheap shot - I believe you will get better and that this game will get better.
So please, finish that drink at your leisure and take your time with the repairs. I know you probably want to make us all happy with a huge update that will fix all of the current problems, and I know that despite what you've said, you will be spending time thinking how to re-balance certain Legions, I mean, aspects of the new Chapter.
But I just wanted to let you know that I continue to support you, and whenever you need a drink and a Scarlet Johansen-Looking ear with some of that Sam Elliot goodness, you can come to me. I'll be here. Playing Legion.
PS
Is Mathieu Cote seeing someone? I'm just curious. For a friend who wishes to remain anonymous.
