I think when he infects someone it turns the zombies into hyper mode. Heighten awareness to the infected survivor, faster movement speed of they are tracking them. Maybe even a higher chance of them spawning near the infected. It takes three strikes to down someone with the tentacle, perhaps giving the zombies a boost can help.
