Trap Killers Aren’t Fun
…to face.
I’m saying this because we’re coming across another potential trap killer in the game, being new Skull Merchant. They’re going to reasonably buff her, and once they do that’ll be another trap killer to the mix.
I play Hag from time to time, but even I can see we really don’t need trap killers. Sure Trapper is a push over, but once it works, you BARELY can do anything against it. If there’s a competent trap killer, especially in solo queue, there’s no skill expression. You don’t have any meaningful chase and there’s no flavor to it. It’s just waltzing into a trap or zoned out at an intersection. Artist and Knight might have the problem of being so boring because they’re zoning, but trap killers take it a step further. At least with those two you can kind of do something in chase. Trap killers though? Sucker up I guess and either take the free hit or walk along the edge of a tile since you can’t use it. Hag abuses this more but that’s because she’s slightly better designed than Trapper.
I don’t mind having two killers with a trap mechanic. I do mind when we start seeing more of them.

Complaining about killers that barely get played

They all have counters though, if survivors don't utilise them then they don't get to complain about fun. Its not that hard to check nearby loops for traps, especially Hag just sprint when she picks someone up to check/disable traps for later its that easy.

At least Trapper needs to be strategic and gives a different immersion to survivors.
At least Hag needs to be strategic and has some counterplay.
At least Artist and Knight have different elements in their kit that can make them potentially interesting. Even in anti-loop, Artist still needs to aim something.
Skull Merchant is just “press M2 and survivor leaves” and “don’t go to area.” Oh boy what fun is that! Please just scrap her entire kit, nothing about her is interesting.

It's possible to understand the counterplay and still not enjoy it.
I think trap killers have a place in the game and people who enjoy them should get new options to enjoy, but I'd still rather play vs 5 Weskers in a row before a single Trapper.

Just because something is rare to come across doesn't mean people don't have the right to complain about it. Buckle Up / For the People isn't a common perk combo but it's completely unfair, should we just not criticise it?

Trap killers absolutely have skill expression, they just push you towards a different type of expression than traditional looping. Their skill expression is tactical and macro, about how you react to traps and how proactive you are about disabling them.
They're harder to balance and I'll believe that a lot of people don't like facing them, but I don't think this criticism is fully accurate.

True, they're very boring to play against

Old Hag used to be my least favorite killer to face but now its Trapper

Different strokes and all.
I don't like playing against trap killers, either, but they are fun to play, and some people do like them or at least don't mind them. I find Pinhead super fun to play against, but a lot of people loathe him. Plague is my least favorite killer to play against in the entire game, but some people like playing versus Plague.
Not everyone wants to play a high skill expression character like Blight, Wesker, Huntress, etc. - some people want the more methodical playstyle trap killers bring, and those players shouldn't be ignored.
As that one anniversary quote said, playing DBD is like eating a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get. Sometimes you get coconut. You might not like coconut, but other people do like coconut. Can't always get the one you like.

It's not that bad unless they're playing basement or map is RPD, if they do play basement just go next immediately I guess, it's a basement issue more than a trap killers issue

Not every killer has to have a huge mechanical skill component. Some players like strategic gameplay a lot more.
Trap killers are exact that.
I dislike blight and Wesker for example. I like to play against them. I dislike to play them.
Trapper is actually very enjoyable for me to play against. He's kinda an awareness and teamwork check. If your team ignores the traps he can be very punishing (at times). He also makes me very cautious about where to step and where not. Makes looping a bit more of a scary thing. (How it should be in my opinion)
I like trap killers. To play and to play against.
I dislike them camping basement though.

You don't have to do any of that though. There are only so many places where traps make sense: loops and intersections. Run early and don't run to those. Just W edge map early and you have free 30+ chases for nothing. You force the killer to commit away from their traps or leave you.
Is it the most engaging thing? Not if someone only enjoys looping. But if you enjoy macro at all, there's good back and forth to be had on survivor. You play the macro game perfectly while your teammates step in traps near basement for no reason because they took shack window against a freaking Trapper. Just...why? Run to a corner. Don't throw.

something that I have known for long time. trapping killer are least fun archetype for survivor to face if they are effective.
skull merchant's trap has least reward. with hag, when you trigger trap, it is instant tp. with trapper, when you get hit by a trap in the middle of a chase, it is direct instant down. for skull merchant, there is no guaranteed that anything happens. all you get is slightly more difficult chase. she used to have pallet break on slide but that is gone.
