Please design more fun killers

Hello,

This might obviously be subjective since everybody defines a fun killer a bit different. Yet, there are certaint killers that are universally praised that they are both fun to play against and also fun to play as.

Lets look at them:

Hillbilly

Blight

Wesker

Oni

To some degree also Wraith

I would love to hear your opinion if you completly disagree with this and why you do, but for now lets stick with it that this is true. All of them are fun go against and also a lot of fun playing.

Why is that?

All of them can zoom around the map. That means there are many chases, and both roles obviously love that. Thats the reason why most like this game, right?

Since they are so fast and they dont waste time traversing the map, they dont need a ridicilous chase power to win back the time they lost running around doing nothing. Yet, all of them have a good, mechanical chase power that is fair for both sides. Usually the better player in that situation gets out on top.

Hillbilly is just the prime example and in my opinion the perfect killer in DBD. I wish they would not have nerfed him so much and i even think the old billy is more suiteable for the game as it is now. Blight comes really close aswell, i only wish they would nerf some of his overtuned addons. Then he is perfectly fine and can create the ideal gameplay scenario.

I know that BHVR wants to create a diverese roster of killers, but i wonder why we have such a small pool of really "fun" killers in that regard. If i am not wrong, we have more then 30 playable killers, and only a handful fullfill the golden standard for "fun killer".

What do you think?

Maybe BHVR even made a statement in the past that i might have missed?

Kind regards

Like you said fun is subjective... so all Killer have a degree of fun

It all depends on the playstyle... so yea

But Pig, Hag, Spirit and Huntress (with the ones you said)

Generaly speaking, fun Killers are these who have strong power, yet provide good opportunity to counterplay and skill metters on both sides.

100% those are the most fun killers to play against. But I imagine it's really hard to design all new killers like that, they kinda tried with giving tps to people but one was sadako and one was dredge. One being abysmal to go against and the other is just alright imo.

Billy is a stretch, honestly. He is fun to play when you are good with him but probably one of the worst killers to learn and this is further amplified by invisible walls, an abundance of clutter and odd loop shapes. He is fun to play against though.

Most people prefer mechanical skill over tactical gameplay it seems. There is nothing wrong with that but it is only natural, that they can't please everyone. Some people enjoy playing as and against Knight, others like Playing as and against Hillbilly more. It all depends on who you ask.

So, I wouldn't say that BHVR have a problem with designing unfun killers but more that they can't please everyone. As you said it's very subjective, if a killer is fun or unfun.

They can't make another Clown. He's one of a kind.

I mean I would say they should make more killers like Artist because she’s the most fun to me, but fun is subjective, so it’s hard to say what kind of killers BHVR should be making. You can’t really please everyone but you can please as many people as possible if you keep releasing unique killers that have different ways of making them fun.

It is true what you say, so there can be an agument made for a killer like Huntress. Still, the formular which defines a fun killer is only fulfilled by so few killers, which is a shame.

Artist and fun do not belong in the same sentence. She’s a hold W queen, and holding w is the most boring mechanic in the game.

Get to loop, she drops bird, hold w to next loop, repeat.

If you love her that’s great, but I’d delete her in a second. xD Absolutely despise hold W killers.

They cant please everyone for sure; but playing billy if you are decent can be extremly satisfying. And survivors love billy, thats why i think he is so good. Both are fine with him.

You cant say this with many killers. Most are either only fun for survivor or only fun for killer.

My personal list of fun killers to play as or face would be totally different and wouldn't include any of those. So yeah, fun is very subjective.

But I would say some Killer powers encourage or excel at pretty unfun playstyles and for me that applies to quite a few on that list.

Some Killers can be both fun and terrible to face, depending on the add-ons they use. A spooky Myers that likes to sneak up on you is always fun. But a Myers that tiers up as quickly as possible to get their infinite tombstone add-ons into play is one of my least favourite Killers to face.

Well, Freddy is about one third of a Clown.

He has the Dream Snares that work as a weaker version of Clown's purple bottle. And no yellow bottle equivalent. Or any power at all against survivors that are awake.

For me pig is super fun. I only played Wesker once for his adept.

    Very subjective you see.

Most of these killers however, I agree are generally seen as fun to play.

Only exception is billy. Billy is not fun to play. If you think he is, you don't play him enough.

Correction: Artist and YOUR fun do not belong in the same sentence. You don’t have to like her, but don’t make it all about your tastes.

I agree with your list. All of those are fun killers that require skill to use and thus is rewarding when doing well. They are powerful in the right hands but still challenging. I hope BHVR will keep making such killers.

Not only making fun killers but please don't ruin existing fun killers BHVR with pointless reworks. Onryo used to be really fun to play as and against and now its absolutely awful. As Onryo you either win easily because of the condemn buffs and people not countering or get destroyed because the rework nerfed everything else about her kit. It forces Onryos to play in the least fun way possible which is a slug condemn build because it is now the best way to play her due to how they did the buffs and nerfs. This is exactly the opposite of what survivors were asking for. It sucks as Onryo and it sucks as survivor. There is nothing rewarding about easy wins and nothing more frustrating then losing because you want to play anything but the mindless condemn strategy but her power has 2 cool-downs and got nerfed hard while giving her no chase power to compensate.

Please just revert the rework but keep the Ring Drawing nerfs and Onryo will be fun again. Also for the love of god please don't ruin what makes Twins fun like you did with Onryo.

Would you be so kind and name the killers you find from that list unfun and why you feel that way?

Thats the point of this thread. A killer who is only fun for 1 side, is not something the devs should strive. Artist is a prime example for that: Fun to play, absolutly no fun playing against.

But I find her fun to go against so do my tastes matter at all? This is the problem with this community, a lot of you are selfish and only want the things that appeal to you and not thinking about the many niche groups that find somewhat unpopular killers fun.

Also I don’t care how unanimously fun killers like Billy and Wesker are. If you keep releasing killers like them, the game will get stale as it would be the same thing every single chapter. I like having variety in the killers we get, just as long it isn’t something objectively problematic like old Legion or old Skull Merchant.

It might be a skill issue on my part, but I tend to struggle against most of the Killers on that list.

Wesker seems able to slam you against just about any silly thing and his power benefits from ping differences, so he can often feel unfair. His virulent bound has very little cool down time and a powerful secondary hindering effect if he catches you. If you try to cure it with a spray, you just let him know where you are. Can also leap over pallets and follow up fairly quickly with a basic attack (unlike Legion). In my experience, in chase he's an oppressive and difficult Killer to shake off.

Blight is ridiculously fast and can smash through pallets (That's if he even lets you drop one thanks to Blood Favor). We all know how strong he is and it doesn't help that I just have no idea what counter play there is to him. I know he's difficult to master though, so at least his power is earned.

Wraiths always seem to come out of cloak way too quickly and before you know it, you're eating dirt (and/or playing injured for the rest of the game because they all run Sloppy Butcher). Is an excellent camper and his cloaked speed helps with tunneling.

Oni and Billy are fine to face but are still not among my favourites.

As far as playing those Killers, I can only comment on the ones I own:

I always have a rotten time when I play as Billy. I'm just completely hopeless with him. It feels so embarrassing.

Wraith is OK to play I guess, but I find I enjoy the other stealth Killers like Myers, Sadako and Pig much, much more.

For me, nearly any killer can be fun depending on a trial-by-trial basis. I have had some amazingly dull matches against Oni (who I would consider is my favourite killer and the one who is built for excitement!). In fact, every killer - with the exception of Skull Merchant - have given me both exciting and boring matches.

It is all subjective, but a massive reason for how interesting a trial will be is largely based upon a lot of factors in the person who is playing the killer, what survivors I'm with and what the rng gods offer.

something in common with all those killer you named except for wraith is all killer being skill-shot based with mobility. Billy is skill-shot rush. Blight has skill-shot m1, same for Oni. Wesker is skill-shot dash. the problem with just adding more skill-shot dash type killers is that you end up with killer roaster that all looks and plays the same. there is only so much in skill-shot you can put before it is all the same thing.

that is why dev tend to make different killers with different goals and different gameplay. this is so that there is variety in how every killer plays. there is always some expected redundancy but their goal is to keep each killer fresh. I think what I want to see is more killer with instant down base-kit.

Fun is subjective. Personally, I think Movement powers feel awful in DBD. The nurse's blink, the blight's rush, billy's dash, wesker's bound, the oni's charge, they all feel like trash which is why I don't play any of them (except wesker, but even then, I only rarely play him). If that became the norm, I wouldn't bother playing any new killers.

Issue is there's only so many ways they can make killers with high map mobility, and strong but counterable anti-loop. They're already running out of ideas for killers with healthy gameplay in general.

You are not wrong with what you say. Still, looking at those killers serpatly do not make me feel we have a lineup of copy paste hillbillys. They all play (and verse) very different.

I am aware the diversity is a good thing, even if that means we might get a few killers that are a pain to go up against. It is just mindblowing to me, that while there are only a handfull of "fun killers" they release so many of those considered to be unfun.
