BHVR quietly turned Community Contest Cosmetics into a new FOMO mechanic
Reposting this - I swear I posted it earlier, but it's gone for some reason. Very strange. This may be something that bugs me, exclusively, but I think it's a conversation worth having.
The first couple rounds of community cosmetics (Mr. Puddles, Demon Slayer, Never Stop Slashing, and Freestyle Claudette) got put in the store a little over a year after they first went up on the Rift. I thought these were so awesome - not only are they cosmetics built by the community that supported this game, but you can also only unlock them through playing the actual game since you can't buy them with cells. As such, I started saving my shards for the Afropunk and Maiden of Vanity skins, added in the tome that began 10/21/2021.
That was nearly 2 years ago now. This also marks nearly 1 full year since Midnight Techwear and Fallen Angel went up on the Rift that began 10/12/2022 - so not only did the 2021 skins not get added, it's beginning to look like the 2022 ones aren't either.
I know BHVR has been erratic with adding tome skins to the store, but these used to be on a regular schedule that has since completely stopped. It seems as though BHVR isn't interested in putting these skins on the store at all, likely because they don't make money on them.
Not to harp on last week's drama, but this makes the whole "we don't want to add FOMO mechanics to DBD" all the more laughable. If you just installed DBD last week, and you see the Afropunk skin is cool and want to use it - too bad. There doesn't seem to be any concrete reason you can't unlock it, other than because BHVR doesn't want you to. If there was, you wouldn't be able to unlock Mr. Puddles either. At least a P100 recolor would be unlockable eventually.
Until we get some communication from BHVR on this, the next time community skins go up in a rift (likely soon), we need to begin warning new players that if you don't bother to unlock them you're not going to get them.
