From what I remember it's the first step towards Cross Progression. Dunno what else it's useful for, maybe connecting other games they put out? I'm sure others know more.
Since I'm on Xbox I've never bothered, since my own personal hope for Cross Progression has long expired.

There are some unique cosmetics you get by linking your account. Mostly past event items (from the original Summer BBQ) that were bugged and a lot of people that should have gotten them didn't, so they just gave them to everyone, including new players, for doing an account link. Even then, there are a few that sometimes you don't get, but then you just open a ticket which ones you are missing and they'll manually add them to your account.
