This isn't my type of post, but just spreading the message out. I also request it stays on General Discussions so its seen and aware of more, thanks!
Recently, there are people who will send you a fake "50 dollar gift card redemption" link in your steam friend messages, and if you click on it, the website looks pretty legit, it will make you re-login in order to earn the code, but it's only a scam, they only want to steal your information, change your email and password, and prevent you from accessing it.
A bunch of my friends had their entire accounts taken from them because of this, please stay safe and do not trust links from random friends on steam, even if you know the person, make sure you check the link name and make sure it doesn't have errors like "staem" or "comunity", errors like that prove its a fake site.

Also, when those people access your account after you login through the fake redeem site, they will use your account to scam others. It's a horrendous thing those awful people do, people lose accounts from this, once again, please stay alert everyone!

The rule of thumb is never trust random steam invites or anything they say or send to you.

Correct. I just feel extremely bad for my friends who lost their accounts because of this.
They also got charges on their card that they didn't make from them, it's just terrible.

Yeah I almost fell for that. Luckily my friend responded after I asked him why it didnt work and we both immediately changes our passwords etc.

I got hacked over half a year ago and my steam sent suspicious link to other people...
Thing is, they hacked me on multiple platforms Twitter, Twitch, Steam, Reddit, Discord over a few day span...I suggest you to change all of your password from other social media sites before that happen to you with other sites

It's 2023. How do people still not know to never click on anything offering you anything? And you have to enter your login info? How are people falling for this?
Every message and friend request from random people on Steam is someone trying to rip you off. Every single one.
I guess it explains all the emails I get about my unclaimed tax refund, undelivered packages, and free money from African princes.

This rule of thumb applies to everything. If someone contacts you with a link or phone number, or claims to be a company and asks you to confirm any details whatsoever without you having contacted them first, refuse everything.
When talking to any company, search through google, and go through their official channels such as webpages or direct contact information. Never trust anything where anyone contacts you first... especially if anything say urgent, limited time, or anything that says you have to act fast.
I've actually told off quite a few legit companies for contacting me via methods that can easily be mimicked by scammers š

I'm sure some other people have reasons to falling for it, for an example my friends. When my friend fell for it, the person then stole her account sent the scam link for the 50 dollars to all her and my other friends, making them get scammed as well. We all gifted each other stuff before so a 50 dollar card was nothing new, so we gladly took it.
We known each other for years now, and we wouldn't dare believe it was a scam or somebody that stole her account, that's one reason how it can happen, though not everybody has that excuse.

A lot of the time I keep mine private. Not sure though about others.
