So, What is the Ideal Map Design Currently?

In terms of balance. Back then it was Coal Tower, then it hit a gray area for a bit around when new Shelter Woods came out, and then it was Nostromo, which I disagree with. Nostromo has too many junk tiles while also being too big for M1 and no mobility killers like Slinger.

What is the de facto king of map design currently that the community thinks the devs should follow, if any?

Nostromo is supposed to be good map design? What? Its one, if not the worst designed map, both visually and from gameplay perspective. Clunky walls, so many random objects, bad tiles, horrible main building, bad second building ("shack"). And on top of that, it has two complete dead ends.

The best maps are in my opinion:

    • Coal Tower, but also any McMillian besides Shelter Woods.
    • Wreckers Yard
    • Cowshed, Torment Creek
    • Father Campbells Chapel

I’ve seen a good bit early when it released say it was one of the better map designs, but maybe that skewed away since then. Also, yeah, Cowshed became an actually decent map from my experience.

Nostromo is not and never was a good map. I agree with you on that.

    Coal Tower is good.

    Wreckers Yard is good.

Both Yamaoka maps are pretty good other than the 3 gen issue.

    New Cowshed is pretty good.

Old Rancid Abbatoir was good (the new one is too killer sided).

Chapel is usually good but is susceptible to RNG which can make it bad.

    Honestly, I don't know.

Old Chapel was easily the most balanced map BHVR has ever made, and for that I praise them. I have to give credit where credit is due.

But it is gone now, and I don't think we still have a perfect map.

Probalby Crotus Prenn maps. Reworks brought 3 gens and dead zones on almost well balanced maps. New maps are mostly ackward on designs. Never even mind those indoor maps.

Anything square or rectangle in my experience, but not too large or small.

Also, flat space unless a building/loop creates elevation. The swamp maps annoy me to this day due to that.

Though I can't say I'm completely sure since I still do like the RPD maps.

    Nostromo is good map?

It's one of the worst maps. Terrible loops, garbage pallets, unsafe main building, gens are so close to each other.

As bizarre as it feels to say...

    Cowshed.
