DBD on the PS Portal

The Playstation Portal is coming out here in Australia next week and I pre-ordered one mostly to play DBD on. However I've read a couple of comments saying the performance isn't too good and there's a delay on skill checks? Does anyone here have some feedback? Thank you

Most cloud based devices have at least a small delay. I can notice a delay just switching from PC to PS5, on the skill checks, because of the framerate difference. So streaming from the PS5 to the PS Portal will probably have more. I don't know if you can afford it or not, but if you just want to play it on a portable device, the steamdeck runs it quite well. I've played on mine several times, usually at low settings. Resolution isn't the highest but I have played it on low settings on my TV as well.

I cant speak how it will actually be because I haven't tried out the PS Portal yet. Just speculating on how most cloud based devices work for me and the reviews I've watched.

I would like to know how it works when you get it though. I had thought about getting one someday so my niece can play on it.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it! I'm happy to update here once I've given it a go. I did briefly consider the Steam Deck but I've already switched from the Nintendo Switch to the PS5 so not really keen on starting from scratch a third time. I imagine going to the Portal might be a bit like going back to the Switch, as there was a definite skill check delay on that console. So I might be okay adjusting, just hitting Greats might be tougher.

It may not be as bad as I might think. I did try DBD on gamepass cloud gaming a couple of times. It was mostly playable just the skill checks had big delay playing that way. I don't blame ya for not wanting to switch. Cross progression and transfers would be nice.

Just as a thought have you tried the PS remote play app on a phone. I'm sure the portal should be made to be better and more enjoyable but it may be worth checking out too.

Nah I haven't tried the remote play app, I'll give it a go tonight to get an idea. Thanks!

Just an update - got the Portal and I wouldn't recommend DBD on it. The skill check delay was frustrating and I missed so many, but the worst was the jumping and freezing. I went down in chase at one stage because my game froze for a couple seconds. I'll use it when away from home but at home will use the console instead.

Your big issue is that you're dependant on the connection from your home network to your PS Portal.

Remote Play can be used with a mobile data connection or Wi-Fi. Broadband internet with at least 5Mbps is required. For a better Remote Play experience, a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended using either Wi-Fi or mobile data connection

Most home Internet connections don't care about upload speed and your average hoke network I would doubt is really capable of the kind of upload speeds you would want to do this smoothly.

I think the main advantage of the Portal to my understanding was if your family was watching TV or whatever, you would be able to play the PlayStation still without having to move it or set up another TV.

Cheers. I thought I had a good internet connection, but if it's stuttering then I'm guessing not?

It might be to be fair, more often than not upload speed is an afterthought, because your average user only needs to download really with minimal uploading.

You can test it with https://www.netmeter.co.uk/

Preferably from your PlayStation browser if possible to account for your Playstations connection to your router as well. You'll also need to check the network where you're connecting your portal as well (though I doubt this is where any bottlenecks are, if you're on 5g or WiFi connection then you should be getting bandwidth in Gigs).

I'm trying to think how you'd test the portal itself, because the quality of it's WiFi adapter and its connection to the network will also be a factor as well... but I'd guess that wasn't the issue (hopefully).

Regardless it should help you narrow down what part of the system is slow for you.

EDIT: also depends on PS Remote Play, and what it allows. For peace of mind with the portal, try playing it via remote play from inside your own network, cause if it isn't able to do that, you've go no hope 😅

Thanks for the info! I'll test the speed from the browser and see how I go. Kind of funny that the portable Nintendo Switch works smoother than this 😅

Yeah, I think Sony was attempting to compete with the Switch, but to do so had to find a way to get PS5 games on a handheld device...

Which is... ambitious at least... but the only way they could even try was to try to stream to the Portal instead of having its hardware run the game itself...

It's effectively a wireless TV with a PS controller stapled on trying to send all the video data over the Internet 😁

Yeah hubby and I were pretty disappointed to discover that lol I was playing on the Portal and it was reflected on the TV the console was hooked into. Wasn't expecting that lol

Thanks for testing it out. Was thinking about getting one some day, but when I can't play this game on it, then I will get it much later.

    No worries!

I did manage to make it a tad better after reading some online posts. I hooked my PS5 up to my modem via Ethernet (easy enough since they're in the same room) and someone said if its hooked up to a Sony TV (it was) to unplug the PS5s HDMI cable from the TV when using the Portal. Doing these steps stopped the freezing and alot of the stuttering, but it still stutters abit in matches. Enough to bother me, some people might be fine with it. So worth trying that if you eventually buy it and have the same sort of issues.

Thanks for testing it out and letting us know. UndeddJester mentioned some good points but there isn't really any perfect remote play that I've found. It also varies from game to game.

DBD being an online game means you are using the PS5 for streaming to the portal, as well as, downloading/uploading while playing DBD. So it's kind of pulling double duty. It may be a cause of the stutter. Streaming a single player game should have a little less stutter but the latency may or may not change much.

The Ethernet thing is always a great idea. Outside of my phone I try to run all my PCs or consoles over Ethernet if possible. Your Internet connection plays a big role. Not just speed but the latency as well. Speedtest website can show your upload/download speed. It does a latency or ping test as well but that can vary for different scenarios. It connects to my ISP and says I have 5ms but with DBD it can range anywhere from 30-150ms.

Thanks for the info! I do think it's simply at the mercy of being a multiplayer game, you're right. My other games all work seamlessly which is nice, plus DBD is fine in menu, store, etc. The stutter is simply while in a match so it's definitely a connection thing. I think I've gotten it as smooth as I can with the Ethernet connection. So it's definitely not bad to play DBD on, but not good either lol

Long as it's "good enough" for playing outside of home or something then that probably isn't bad. Not ideal but at least something to do when away.
