Lights out brings back horror to DbD
Now, this comes as someone who has been playing mostly as survivor (70/30) the latest iteration of the controversial Lights out modifier. And so far I am loving it, both as a survivor and as a killer.
To begin with, many here and on Reddit seem to love the whole chase mechanics of the game (to a point that a guy on Reddit said something along the lines that the devs forgot this was a chase game and not a horror game). I, for one, feel that this modifier brought back the horror factor into the equation. Hiding is once again worth your while and the scare factor is once again back into the game! Mindless, joy-killing loop chases are pretty much gone and best of all, despicable, ubiquitous perks (such as Decisive Strike and Dead Hard if you're playing as a killer, or any gen-blocking perk if you're playing as a survivor) are gone. Everyone is basekit and relying on the most basic of skills and coordination to survive.
Understandably, some things could and should be polished if this modifier were ever to be brought back in the future (playing against the Dredge when Darnkess hits is downright impossible), but overall, I think this is a step in the right direction. I feel that the game really benefits from going back to its roots and away from mindless loop chases that have more in common with a Looney Tunes episode than an actual horror experience.
