Is the The “killer name” an entity lore rule or just an estect choice?

why not just call the killers who they are?
The shape I understand because that’s how he was named in the original script but the others have real names at least the licenced ones do. This is just a question not a critique

Killers conceptually were probably meant to have abstract names, but I'd bet they ran into a few license holders who insisted on the iconic name and the rule eventually got slackened, hence killers like the Demogorgon, the Ghost Face, and the Good Guy existing alongside the Nightmare, the Mastermind, and the Shape.
No explanation for the Skull Merchant, though. That was just badly conceived on all levels.
