Scott Jund’s Conspiracy Theory

I am an American and I play DBD from the East coast. I typically play Dead by Daylight all morning long until the afternoon on heavy days. Despite this, I have played with and against Otzdarva and Hens simply by playing the game at the same time they happen to. I do not think matchmaking is actually georestricted. It doesn’t make sense how I would be in European lobbies by chance.

Does anyone else have any similar experiences?

No idea if it's related or not (probably not), but I had a couple days this week where the first 4-5 killers I faced all had pings of 200+ (I always start my session with surv to warm up). I made a note of it in my head, but didn't think much else of it. But it would make sense if someone had been assigned to the wrong region somehow.

Nothing to the extent Scott's describing, though.

I play in the US Western region, usually at what Scott calls degen hours, but on those days I played earlier in the day.

yeah makes sense they would pool the ques at odd hours when a lot of people aren’t online in your regions.

for example in the states 6am-5pm most people are at work or school while it’s usually around midnight in Europe around 6 am our time, so most people are asleep there.

I thought we just got a new NA East server by BHVR HQ in Montreal? I never could have joined otz even if my life depended on it back when I tried during his "the thing" challenge

They did activate some central Canada servers in Montreal. And more NA servers too (Ohio and North California to be exact). As well as London servers on top of the Ireland (Dublin I believe) servers for some reason.

I haven't seen or heard of anyone experiencing what Scott is experiencing here. Very rarely people will end up on far-away servers, although in my experience then usually all players in that match including the killer are not from that server region, and let alone having this happen consistently for an hour. What I have seen more consistently is players in the London region being sent elsewhere, possibly because the amount of available servers in that region might be notably limited.

I know Scott is or had in the past been active on these forums, so on the chance that he sees this: I could help you in DMs.

As for cross-region matchmaking… Well, BHVR years ago had actually played with that idea and said they would be looking to better the MMR matchmaking by having it look at wider, cross-region player pools. But again, I haven't seen this happen for anyone including myself, I don't even get sent to nearby servers where my ping is still low. I'm always on my regional servers unless I'm joining other people's lobbies or such.

Encountering Hens and Otz in NA could also simply be due to them VPNing to play over there at times, or joining their NA friends in survivor lobbies. Contrary to what Scott states again in this video, there is a notable difference between the player pools. Ask any experienced EU streamer that has played in NA and they will tell you the same thing. And vice versa. The NA regions are decidedly more casual on average, from builds to levels of "sweating" and "tryharding", there's just lots more people that don't seem to care as much, as well as a lot more console players proportionally. 90% of the competitive tournament scene is composed of EU players. Even the difference between the UK and EU region is already blatant, and I think major reason why Scott is convinced EU is basically the same as NA is that he connects to UK whenever he does these experiments. UK is not EU. UK is London and Dublin, a much smaller pool that mostly features British players as well as a lot more console players. "EU" is Frankfurt servers. Doesn't mean there aren't also lots of casuals in EU, and it's not like a good killer player gets challenged all too much all too often there either, but the average level of play and sweat is definitely higher, and encountering high-level players more common than in UK/NA.

I've been placed in EU servers a few times as a west coast NA player, I've verified with wireshark, although I can't speak to whether it is happening increased frequency as of late.

It is technically not georestricted. Anyone from anywhere can be put on any server, but the game puts you on the one you have the best ping for.

If you use a program or tool to check ingoing and outgoing connections, you can see which amazon game server you’re being connected to.

You can also block specific servers to force yourself into certain regions. By default the game picks the server with the best ping, if you cannot connect to a server it will not include it. So network issues and server issues (capacity, outages) can cause your “best” server to be EU as an NA player the same way blocking NA server connections will.

That said, matchmaking appears to happen “in server”. So if the game determines your best ping is on some server you will get matched with people with the same.

Anecdotally, have never been paired with Otz or Hens in 4000+ hours yet have seen NA streamers like Tofu or Scott several times. Every TTV I check out postgame is NA too.

Within 5 matches of blocking connections to every game server except EU I was able to get into a KnightLight lobby, so I don’t think matchmaker will pull from other severs just because of queue times.

Might be a backbone provider routing issue.

I use ExitLag so I can see the servers that I am connecting to, and I am from the UK. At least once per day, all the European and UK players will get placed into an NA server which makes us all have 200 ping for that entire game, for it to be fixed the new time we queue. Very weird, indeed.

not that weird, it’s actually a standard practice, I work in communications and internal tests and maintenance are perfectly normal that shut down everything mostly for facility reasons, they call them generator tests, and well no power means no servers when testing generators to make sure back ups work, everything goes out.I don’t work specifically in that area, I’m in data, but yeah I work with a very large variety of people in cyber, and naturally learn things here and there outside your expertise, and the amount of specialists will shock you. Also yep mostly wiring maintenance for servers so you can enjoy your games, you just gotta suffer a tiny bit sometimes so the entire system doesn’t go to poo. When it’s down longer it’s usually because system replacements and set up times. So power testing plus server maintenance/up keep.

I don't know what time Scott plays, but he probably starts streaming at odd hours in North America, and after an hour, Americans start getting up or coming home from work, and then he starts getting matched with people in his area. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I love learning things too, but I don’t work for BHVR or any game development company, but I’d like to one day! It’s my dream job! Right now I have prior commitments I’m contracted to but I do work in and around while not spitting image a similar setting creating products for a mass and am gainfully employed elsewhere.

Do they have their own personal server team at BHVR working for them in the same building with the servers on location at multiple locations idk, but who I work for does, that’s not a brag, I’m just saying, lots of people do contract out to perform a task they don’t want to internally or can’t internally do for whatever variable. Like I said the people I work for do; so I know why; I’ll share why.

I’m sure if whoever does that for them saw you said though that they would really appreciate it, because cyber in general gets a lot of hate for things that are for everyone’s benefit, and not because they’re trying to stick it to you and get away with something.

anyways servers can’t get too hot and it’s starting to get hot in Europe this time of year, and idk about the rest of Europe but England specifically doesn’t have central heat and air , so so a mass server station in probably a warehouse that functions for something like gaming companies will probably be down more often than not for maintenance, so you’ll get put on NA servers, if they are moving you, if you’re not vpning in more. Because unfortunately servers have a weakness and it’s heat. So they have two options they can blow their whole system(nobody in their right mind would do that) or shut it off so it can cool down. It’s not because it’s bad equipment, it’s because it’s hot. So anyways yeah just another thing I know.

Australia has been getting shoved into Asia servers for over a year now. Almost half my games at this point are in a high-ish ping Asia server.

Maybe it's starting to spread to other servers now. Or maybe Scott is secretly Australian.

Yeah sure no problem, I have my own specialty, but decent general knowledge of most things communications relates to. You’re going to have to take your profile off private as I don’t have access to it.
