Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Why do some survivors refuse to bring items?

I don’t know why people do this and intentionally make the game harder for their team. At least bring something to help your team. Even a crappy brown toolbox is better than nothing. In my experience, it’s a big red flag when I spawn into a lobby and my teammates don’t want to bring an item that could potentially make the difference between escaping a dying.

I always bring an item, but I did go itemless a lot in the Christmas event. Instead, I brought Pharmacy, Plunderer's, and a cobbler. Then I went around opening chests and giving everyone green medkits, including the killer :D

For the most part, i bring a medkit with a charge and a speed add-on. This is good for self-healing once, and helping another survivor in a dire situation. I rarely bring syringes or styptics.

    1. It helps the unhooker by being able to go somewhere else (i.e. on a gen or unhooking someone else) in the time window it takes me to heal back up to full health, and when I am done, I can go to the closest gen, and get some progress done.
    2. If I know that the killer is far away when unhooking someone, I could spend the last 16 charges on the unhooked survivor, and heal them at a faster rate, saving some time on resetting.

Because most of the time I simply don't feel like bringing anything.

There are chests in the environment where I can get something from, too.

They dont have a brown medkit, or toolbox? XD Just remind me if im wrong but i see every game one medkit every time. If surviviors refuse to bring items, this might be easy game for me. Or hard if im on survivior side. Even a brown medkit might save the game.

I got so many items on my main characters I've no idea why I wouldn't bring any. Kinda strange.

i don't feel like relying on items. it's better than me just not bringing perks at all

I never really brought Items unless a challenge or Daily required me to do so (which is basically only Sabotaging Hooks for Dailies, but I dont equip the Perk and rather bring a Toolbox). And just got used to not bringing Items.

Was thinking about doing so, because Killers dont appreciate it if you dont bring the broken Stuff anyway and the game got way harder for Survivor over the year, but I also like to hoard stuff and see numbers go up.

Also whenever I decide to equip an Item the Killer will magically spawn into the match with Franklins equipped.

I will say that by that 4th person not bringing an item it allowed your team to dodge my franklins/weave. 4 items gets franklins/weave, 3 or less I swap to a normal build.

I used to bring items and stopped during the Franklins/Weave short-lived era. I guess I got in the habit of not bringing anything because even though Weave isn't as common anymore, I just don't bother unless it helps with a challenge.

If im recording stats I bring no item as thats part of my records & i'd rather not skew data towards particular items.

Likewise if I get a challenge / daily to escape with a new item I won't bother usually because if I do virtually guarantee I forget to grab something else!

Otherwise I'll bring a tool box, I see loads of medkits & almost everyone only ever uses them on themselves, why bother speed healing others when i'd be lucky to get a heal of any kind, only time I bring medkits is this blood moon because toolboxes are virtually pointless & might as well be saved for regular games.

Hate flashlights with a passion & maps are mostly obsolete in 99% of games. Keys even more so!

Never had an issue with what people do or don't bring personally, can't say i've ever paid much attention

You want the killer to use Franklins and waste a perk just to counter items, rather than they using one more gen regression perk. I see no reason to ever to into a game without an item when we all have more than enough of them. If a killer tunnels they would have done so item or no item.

    brewingtea Member Posts: 705

Because even if you die early, that item gets dropped and could be used by your teammates. Why wouldn't you want your team to have the best chance to win? Heck, even if you want to play itemless, just bring an item and drop it at the first gen you see.

As far as "wasting" them: You get just as little use out of them sitting in your inventory as you would if you lost them to Franklin's or death, so…

And to the killers who bring Franklin's if they see 4 items: I have literally hundreds of medkits. I'm fine losing ONE to make you run a worse build, lol

Because it's my stuff and I like to hoard my items. Plus I swear whenever I bring an item the killer brings Franklin's and I hate that ######### perk.

Through experience I know the chance of me getting to keep that item are extremely low. I kind of have been conditioned to go into every match with the mindset of already having lost/expecting to lose— but let’s see how close I can get to the end. But maybe I should start bringing more items. Feed the entity some more

Honestly, I used to do this, as the items are consumable. In many other games I play, I have a tendency of hoarding my consumable items unless there's an easy way of replenishing them. In my early DBD days, I wasn't sure how easy it was to replenish all my consumables, so I would hoard them. I now know that it is easy to re-stock everything, and getting bloodpoints is far easier now than it was when I started playing, so I always go in with a full load out now.

I mentioned this a while ago. I find particularly as survivor if my team mates don't bring items they are either doing challenges or will go next instantly or won't really try to escape. It's rarely a good sign when people don't bring anything at all, not even a brown item.

I don't carry flashlight and I consider that both first aid kits and toolboxes only create dependence, so I don't need any item. The BPs are better spent on the current 39 killers.

Is it wrong that we don't care enough to bring items? Especially when there's an epidemic of people who go to next for a cascade of reasons?

this doesn’t make any sense. There’s basically no downside to brining an item unless the killer has Franklins/Weave which in my experience is not very common. I don’t understand why anyone would want to purposely make the game more difficult for their team by not being able to heal yourself or repair gens faster

  • I_Cant_Loop
    I_Cant_Loop Member Posts: 2,276

This is a very poor attitude to have. It’s no wonder so many people have a miserable solo queue experience if this attitude is common. Sure, there are plenty of matches where the teammates are terrible or they give up immediately, but I’ve also had plenty of fun and competitive matches when the teammates are decent players and actually try. You’re always going to have a rougher time if you have an attitude of “I’m probably going to lose anyway” and make the game harder for yourself by not bringing something that can help you and your team.

  • I_Cant_Loop
    I_Cant_Loop Member Posts: 2,276

There’s literally no downside to bringing a medkit to be able to heal yourself or a tool box to get gens done faster (outside of a very specific killer build of Franklins/weave which is not very common). Why is “dependence” a bad thing? These items make it easier for you and your team to win.

it’s no wonder that solo queue is so often a bad experience with attitudes like this: “I’m going to purposely make it harder for myself and my team because I’m probably going to lose anyway”.

These types of responses here are reinforcing my belief that it’s best to avoid lobbies where other players refuse to bring items. They are already in the mindset of “I’m probably going to lose so I might as well not try.”

    Rulebreaker Member Posts: 2,618

Yet at the same time, bringing an item doesn't inherently make the match better does it? What we want is fun. Bringing an item doesn't make the match fun. Quite frankly we like challenges so your making not bringing an item seem more appealing.

And as an aside, we never said “I’m probably going to lose anyway”, we said "we don't care enough to bring items". We don't think we're going to lose, but we don't care if we do either. Apathy is nice for the non comp mindset.

Blood points are so easy to get now, there should be no concern about running out of items. I play both killer and survivor and spend lots of blood points on both sides. All my survivors have way more items than I will ever need. The excuse that others are making of “I don’t want to risk losing my items” is not a valid one.

You don't have to understand it. I play the game the way I want, you play the game the way you want. Simple as that :).

I always found this weird even more now bloodpoints are crazy easy.

I think people save strongest items for when in a SWF which is nice of them. Bringing nothing though.

Maybe I should be more choosey who I use my strong medkits on.

Ah yes, I forgot the ancient DBD law: if BP is easy to get, everyone must feel exactly the same way about using their items lol

No but in all seriousness, I mean, if someone’s personal experience is that they rarely survive, it’s not really an “excuse,” it’s just a reflection of their reality, it’s just a fact. Whether or not bloodpoints are easy to get doesn’t change that basic calculation of effort vs. likely return.

But since it really bothers you, I will start bringing one just to have 👍 I didn’t know this was considered BM or selfish not to bring one. My bad.

Survivors don't need items, they're bonuses for covering specific things (especially regarding saves and blind/sabo builds.) If you're willing to lobby dodge because another survivor is confident enough in their ability to not need to bring a toolbox then you're overthinking things by a lot.

I also main survivor but don't play often, so I sped almost all of my BP trying to keep up with perk unlocks through prestiges for both roles and rarely actually get to use what I spend my points on. If I completely ignored killers? Sure, but I like to dabble sometimes, so keeping up costs more than how much I actually play anymore. I'd rather be unlocking perks and getting addons that are required for specific builds than saving a few seconds on a gen or bringing tools to annoy the killer.

People are free to do what they want, but I’m going to find a lobby with teammates who aren’t intentionally making it more difficult for themselves and the rest of the team.

With the new progression system and sharing of perks across all characters when you level up, you do not have to spend very many BP to keep up with perk unlocks anymore.

Why should confidence in someone’s ability to play well have anything to do with whether or not they bring an item? There have been so many times I’ve been injured at the end of the game, gates are open, no teammates around, and the ability to heal myself have allowed me to take another hit and get out when I otherwise would have been downed, hooked, and probably dead. That doesn’t have anything to do with confidence or skill. It’s being smart and not intentionally handicapping yourself by not bringing an item that could be the difference between escaping and dying.

OK, and then you can’t use those perk slots for chase perks, healing perks or gen repair perks that are far more useful for helping your team win

I dont play much anymore. In the last year Ive hopped on maybe 3 times. I play to be the sacrifice, randoms and friends Im going to make sure you get out and use myself as a meatshield. Thats the only way I have found this game enjoyable. Bringing an item would be in the wrong hands

Am not gonna waste my useful items for random people that 80% of the time will make terrible choices during the match resulting in all of us dying or not even reaching the end-game before it is 1 v 1.

if anything everytime i see flashlights on my team or as killer , i just know this guys arent even gonna try to reach the end-game so why bothering.

That is because Ace in the Hole + Plunderer's Instinct are the best ways to get a rainbow map from chests. I can then use the rainbow map, if I escape, to run a boon build the next match while using Detectives Hunch + Shadow Step + Dark Theory + Ace in the Hole. With the addons being Retardant Jelly (reduce depletion rate of map by 20%) and Odd Stamp (increases tracking range by +12m)

The alternative is to play with Small Games every time you want to run a boon build, which the hot and cold minigame can sometimes go well, other times a frustrating experience.

With the new progression system and sharing of perks across all characters when you level up, you do not have to spend very many BP to keep up with perk unlocks anymore.

Again, I do not play often, and need to spend my BP across what, 38 killers? and rising? On survivor the only unique aspect to them are their item/addon/offering pools, but on killer upkeep on addons alone is still quite expensive, on top of the perk unlocks (which are much better, like you said.) Trust me, I've been playing catchup for years and I haven't been playing enough to get caught up, so I generally don't use items as survivor because they're not getting the BP to keep stocking them.

Why should confidence in someone’s ability to play well have anything to do with whether or not they bring an item?

    Your own words:

In my experience, it’s a big red flag when I spawn into a lobby and my teammates don’t want to bring an item that could potentially make the difference between escaping a dying.

I took that as you saying you have little confidence based on that one thing alone. I agree that it shouldn't have any bearing whatsoever. I'd directly quote the other lines but to put it simply Its possible (and probable) to not put yourself in situations where the item would be that important as your extreme examples: They're neither guaranteed nor eventualities, and you're just as likely to have a match where you had zero need (as opposed to simple want) for said items.

    that said:

It’s being smart and not intentionally handicapping yourself by not bringing an item that could be the difference between escaping and dying.

…can be said for dozens of things in this game, so you can't really single out people not taking items for that reason. That could be said for anything less than perfect meta and 4 man SWF on comms. People are not throwing if they're not taking every single advantage they can get.

You don't agree with my reasoning, thats fine, you're not me. But holy hell with how people sabotage their teammates constantly this feels like a really weird hangup.
