The unknown is... odd?
So what I mean is that its lore reads like its 'The Thing' from john carpenters "The Thing" but then its abilities seem completely unrelated to the lore. plus if it can shapeshift as needed why does it look all twisted (other than the obvios body horror angle they were going for) wouldn't it be smarter for it to look more human to "trick" survivors? (not that it would actually fool a player because redstain and all but just lore wise)

The unknown is trying his best to disguise, I'm thinking he cant quite figure out how the human body is supposed to look or act.
think: "my step mom is an alien" or "coneheads" and "parasyte"
its like all those movies where and alien/monster tries to blend in with humans but fails miserably.
and I'm pretty sure his power is based off analog horror, with the trippy colors and and hallucinations, i think he is only partially based on the thing.

Unless Im thinking of something completely different or if Im misremembering either his lore or The Thing... but the only thing I can think of that they share is them taking the form of their victims, but The Unknown twists and mutilates their bodies and doesnt even try to mimic who they once were, unlike The Thing which does try to conceal itself. The way it "mimics" peoples voices seems to be more of a way to induce fear. In the base lore, there was no reason for it to "call for help" and to have a party by flickering the lights. Its also said in the lore that anyone who tries to investigate it usually dissappear with no explanation.
My theory is that The Unknown is a physical manifestation of the unknown and its existence is purely because of the belief of its existence, similar to say Santa or the Boogeyman. Only difference is that The Unknown is real.
How this relates to the power is a bit of a stretch, but the way I see it has to do with Weakened. The Unknown isnt much of a threat to a Survivor who isnt Weakened, thus they have no reason to fear it. Once Weakened, the threat of The Unknown is very well present, and the more Survivors who are Weakened (or fear the unknown) the more presence it has, due to Hallucinations spawning more frequently. The only way to get rid of that fear, is to face the Unknown directly. Its also worth mentioning that Survivors who fail to do so (failing to dispel) also become engulfed with fear (Weakened)
as for the grenade launcher idfk lol

This sounds right. It seems to me that The Unknown is indeed trying to mimic one of the survivors; have you ever noticed how it looks like Dwight?
And as far as The Unknown being a manifestation of the unknown as a concept, that might agree somewhat with the tome lore. Mikaela's tome entries say something like that.
However, it's clear that at least one creature on the killer side of things is skilled enough to disguise itself as a normal human girl.

it basically shapeshifts into whatever rumors are circling around it. if you spread a rumor that it looked like a doll with a gun most likely it'll look like that but wrong.
it's basically trying to look human without actually knowing what a human looks like

I think he is odd because he is mix of what people THINK he is. That's why he is so odd and weird looking because his thoughts about him are inconsintent.

Its design is supposed to be ambiguous that it could be many different things but never confirms to be one of them. Is it an alien? A demon? An escaped lab project? Who knows. Does it steal people's bodies or merely imitate them? Does it mimic them to blend in or to taunt its victims? Who knows. It's unknown. Government cover-ups, cults, invaders from outer space, interdimensional evils, all possible origins. The only thing that seems to be concrete is that it excretes a hallucinogenic venom.

It seems to fail horribly at blending in. I honestly don't think it understands truly what it's parroting.
My favourite unknown voice line is "live life...to the fullest" like thanks Mr killer, I really needed to that motivational pick me up today

Im pretty sure its fully aware of what its doing and the way it mimics people is a thing it does to instill fear into its victims.
The main voiceline I can think of that confirms this is one it says in the lobby: "I... the nameless... legend."

The Unknown has quite a interesting story to it. It's nothing but conflicting theories, rumors and old folk tale making it's lore or whatever it is whatever we want to believe it to be.

They did such a phenomenal job with the marketing of the Unknown, he has some of the best lore in the game. Some other people have made some really good comments already in this thread that I won't repeat, but I think a lot of what he has going for him makes sense. The hallucinations feel just about right, I wish the UVX sat a little bit better with me. I remember seeing the awesome teasers thinking this was going to be some long limbed monstrosity crawling after me on a wall just to load in with him and he's sneezing purple goop? I think he has his place in DBD and he's a well designed and marketed killer but you're not wrong either that it feels a little funny sometimes.

One of the Unknowns skins confirms the theory that it conforms to the rumors and mysteries around it. The big bad wolf one specifically as it says a little boy claimed that the Unknown can even kill the big bad wolf.
The skin of course being a twisted dead version of a wolf in grandmother's clothing

That voice line doesnt exist, it is "life… is what we make it"

Those are two motivational pieces by the Unknown!

I remember seeing the theory that it is a Eldrich horror or something adjacent. Like the Dimensional Shambler from The Call Of Cthulhu game. (Very niche pull i know but bear with me.)
Imagine trying to replicate the body of an ant. You could get the basic idea of it down. 2 body segments and 1 head, 6 legs, antenna. Basic right? Now image moving, you don’t walk normally you have to move 6 legs sideways, your much smaller and can experience less senses along with now knowing pheromones. You would look like an abomination to other ants. Now imagine something Eldrich trying to take the body of a human.
They move with 2 legs that bend, their mouths move a lot to communicate, they have arms and fingers that move so bizarrely, and they can bend over. Humans have so many tiny things that make people look human. It is trying to replicate what it sees from behavior it gets from stalking humans. Its voice is like humans doing deer calls. It’s trying to hunt us to look like us.
