Anyone else sad about the upcoming challenge/rarity changes?
I wanna start by saying I've been playing DbD since 2021, around the time nemesis released. I've grown to love this game a lot. I first got into dbd because of the lore, and its still something i care about a lot. So, i do wanna say that i am looking forward to all the lore being unlocked from the get-go. Making the lore more accessible is the right choice, and will help make players grow connected to our characters and the overarching lore of DbD.
That being said, onto the title of this discussion, I'm not looking forward to the upcoming changes to the rarities and the change from the tome-challenge system to the quest system.
Starting with the rarity changes, let me start with an anecdote. I'm still not even used to the current cosmetic selection menu. The old one was simple and easy to use and displayed everything I'd need to see. The new one still feels too unwieldy and difficult to use for me. It feels almost hidden, and some what difficult to navigate at times compared to the old cosmetic menu, but thats besides the point. The point is that like the cosmetic menu change, the changes to the rarities are gonna mess with a lot of people. Honestly, the current rarity system is fine, the colors are fine. Theres some inconsistency between the type of cosmetics in the ultra rare and legendary categories, but that is perfectly fixable within the current system. The new colors are only going to confuse a lot of the current playerbase once they go through. If we could toggle between the old and new rarity system, that would be nice.
As for the challenge-tome system change, I am a fan of finally being able to select multiple challenges to progress through and complete in the same trial. Unfortunately, thats where my praise ends. The quests page is lackluster, and devoid of the aesthetic and vibes of the tome and challenge. It feels generic. "Quests" sounds generic. Just about any game can have quests and it'll sound like it fits. So, quests works fine for DbD, but not as well as Challenges and the Tomes and Rituals. Challenge implies hardship, a perfect fit for the nature of the game. Quests has a too positive connotation. It sounds like youll be given a reward from a belevolent benefacor once its completed. it doesn't suit DbD's tone. Aesthetically, it suffers similarly. It lacks the charm of the tome's commected nodes that also resemble a web, like the bloodweb. I could understand perhaps wanting to move away from the observer, his tower, and the auris, and their aesthetic, but the quest system as it is now looks like a downgrade. I'd rather wait for a much more fleshed out looking challenge system that fits DbD's aesthetic, even if it means waiting on being able to select multiple challenges at once.
All that being said, I hope the DbD team doesn't sacrifice it's current aesthetic for something "simpler" when the current systems aren't even difficult to navigate or use at all. Slow, perhaps, but not difficult or confusing. I also hope the team keeps in mind it's current long-term players when changing and designing new systems and continues to breath life into this wholly unique game that we all love. 🥰

I disagree with the rarity change, however, I am heavily biased as I love the color of the blue items. Having a toggle for legacy item rarity kind of like they have the bloody portraits for having people prestiged doesn't sound too hard though, I like that idea.
As far as the challenges go I really agree. Quests just sounds so generic. Which generic would be okay if this were some MMORPG we were all playing in, but we're not. It's dead by daylight. Rituals just sounds so much better and fits the theme of the game. It can't be that hard to include a little splash message when looking at the challenges for the first time that says something along the lines of "hey, if you complete these tasks during your games, you'll get rewarded with X." Then everyone is on the same page about it. But BHVR wants to cast a wider net which I can respect, I think better UI and tutorials will go farther in accomplishing that then renaming and recoloring things but, who knows?

i can respect that tbh. personally, im not a fan of blue, but it's mostly the fact that it is changing thats gonna bother me since im used to the current colors. like any big color change would've gotten this reaction from me. i can get wanting to get the game to industry standards too but also, I've played overwatch since about launch and apex for a good while before i played dbd, and they have blue commons or whatever, and ive never went "hey, where are the blues?" when playing dbd. But yeah, something like getting the games code to industry standard and more tutorials for different killers and such should be more important than changing things that are currently working and working fine.

Sad? No. Do I think the change is good? No. They should leave that alone.

I just want the Devs to allow players to CHOOSE if they want the old or new scheme; this change is quite unfair to colorblind players.

They're great, so im happy that the Compendium is finally being left in the dust, literally.

No opinion on the first right now, but agree on the second. I much prefer the way tomes currently work.

I find the rarity changes confusing and unnecessary but ultimately that doesn't change anything gameplay wise.
I also don't have an issue with the new quests, but what I am upset about is that they're planning to remove tomes. It removes existing content from the game for no apparent reason.

Yeah, pretty much agree with you on all fronts.

The tomes aren’t gonna be removed, they’re just not doing new ones.
I think they mentioned on a stream that they’ll still be accessible through an equivalent of the compendium.
Edit: it appears i was misremembering. Rip

As someone who's favorite color is blue not at all, I welcome it. Also doing challenges as a survivor is way more annoying compared to killer, so am excited to see how it goes. Won't really affect the game as much imo.

I agree with everything you said. Did you start playing before or after the original UI overhaul they did a few years ago that removed the clean, unique white in-trial UI with the display we have now? People had nothing positive to say about that change but they went through with it anyway. Same thing with the menu changes and cosmetic menu that you mentioned. It's frustrating to navigate these menus in console, but the UI team would rather waste their time painting the dryrot a new (hideous) shade of blue rather than try to improve that experience. I have experienced every UI change they have made since 2018 and each one has been pushing the game further into shovelware slop. This game does not look or feel unique anymore. It's almost pointless to give feedback on major UI changes because no matter how negative the response they just squeeze out the turd no matter what. I really just do not see how changing rarities is going to be a benefit. I've not seen anyone point out the positives aside from the usual glazers who never seem to have a problem with anything the devs do, and so far the only contribution they've made is pointing out how much they like the color blue.
As for the quests, I can't really speak on that because I don't have PTB access. But from what I've seen, it looks bland. Plus, the constant pop-ups in game is like the ultimate zoomer ADHD key-jingling attention trap that probably tested well with that age group but is going to be VERY annoying to anyone who didn't grow up with Tik-Tok as their babysitter. Even showing you the rewards after a trial is just way too much stimulation and I sincerely hope they have an option to turn these notifications off. This game is so far from "horror" now that claiming it's a horror game is practically false advertising.
And on a final note, screw the color blue, it's way overused in this game (and IRL), and it's like the least threatening color on the spectrum. If you like the color that's fine but I'm willing to die on this hill. OTHER COLORS EXIST. Colors that colorblind people can actually SEE by the way.

No, I like the new color. It doesn't change anything gameplay-wise, so I don't understand why anyone would be sad or upset.

I could tolerate the loss of yellow if we got all new colours , but the fact that they changed the value of green is the real crime

I think being able to do multiple tasks simultaneously is going to be a great change. That's the only real opinion I have.

Actually, I do have one problem: calling them "quests" is bad, and I would rather keep calling them "challenges" or "rituals" or "tasks" or anything else.

I agree this is a good change, and I hope the change also removes some of the more obnoxious glyphs. Does anyone even enjoy doing the Pink, Yellow, or Orange glyphs at all? I don't.

There's a certain charm to the old tomes and challenges in them, but trying to finish them all was a huge chore since there were so many, and so many of them incentivized throwing the match to "Stay within the killers terror radius" or "Sabotage 5 hooks" or whatever. I have zero issue with them being shelved. Just the fact alone that all challenges are equipped, getting progress, and cashed in automatically is so much more convenient. Sure you can't save BP anymore, but now the BP cap is 5m, so that helps some.
But I don't think the old tomes should be removed, ever. They should keep them and let people do them if they feel like it, why throw away so much content for no reason?
As for rarity changes, I think it's pretty much unnecessary, I don't think it's any better or makes more sense than what we already have at all, but I personally don't mind it much. Doesn't affect my gameplay so eh. I think it might cofuse new players even more than if they just didn't change them though, now all the old guides will make no sense.

I'm worried that they're going to get rid of character/role specific daily challenges. They gave me a reason to play a variety of killers and survivor skins.
