Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Are There Separate Dev Teams for Cosmetics and Gameplay Updates at Behaviour?

I've been play dead by daylight for a while now, and one thing I’ve noticed is how frequent new cosmetics and collaborations are. It feels like every few weeks there's a new skin or crossover event — which is cool from a variety standpoint I guess but the reason I ask is because while cosmetics and collabs drop pretty consistently, major gameplay improvements, balance patches, or bug fixes seem to take much longer — sometimes several weeks or even months between meaningful updates. It makes me wonder if the studio's priorities are more commercially focused or if it's just a matter of separate pipelines and teams.

    They have separate teams.

Yes, they are separate teams, but BHVR can very easily shift those resources. It’s not like they can’t do anything about how many people they have working on each team.

BHVR is going to prioritize those resources where the most money is made. I don’t blame them for that - that’s their job as a for-profit business. But it’s unfortunate for players who have been waiting for changes/updates/fixes for months or even years. The only thing that is going to get BHVR to shift their resources is if players leave the game in large numbers due to issues not getting fixed quickly enough. That isn’t happening right now.

They are separate teams but its a lot more complicated than that. Its not just balance changes, bug fixes and gameplay improvements. Its also making chapters, designing mechanics, spitballing ideas and deciding where to focus that effort out of everything they do. What bugs to fix, what needs balancing, and meeting the deadlines that come with these chapters. Not to mention, they can working on anywhere to 3 or 4 chapters at the same as seen with the latest roadmap.

The cosmetics of the game have no impact on development but both have the same spirit of pumping out content at a more frequent rate which is why it feels like changes to existing content and mechanics are at a slower pace. At the very least, we do consistently get something at least every 2 weeks in terms of bugs fixes.
