About M1 Killers
Some M1 killers are really fun to play, but I know M1 killers generally aren't liked much. I even wish there were no M1 killers at all, and that every killer had abilities to down survivors with an M2, but unfortunately, that's not the case.
So here's my question: What do you focus on when you're playing an M1 killer? How do you handle generator control? Do you struggle when survivors loop you?
Let's chat!

I am a Mikey main.
I just use surge and pain res because I hate kicking gens. I like to use pwyf and friends til the end.
Add ons I use are Judith's journal for stalking the obsession 40% faster and lock of hair for 40 extra seconds of tier 3. Combined with the speed from Pwyf and 100 seconds of tier 3, it's very effective in ending chases quickly. I rarely lose with it.

Honestly, the M1 killers are my favorite. Ever since I first started playing DBD, all the way back in 2018, Freddy has been my main, and he was pure M1 (technically he can injure people with an M2 now, but the latest changes don't really count in my response here, because I haven't played him since the PTB), and these are the kind of killer I enjoy playing.
I don't like M2 attacks like Nemesis or Xeno, and I particularly dislike dash killers like Blight or Wesker.
As for generator control, I think that was the main advantage of playing Freddy back in the day, as through him you could really learn how to control the map, which generators to check and, especially, when to drop chase. As for loops, I like them. It is the DBD gameplay I'm used to, so it doesn't bother me.
Way better than watching someone hold W and pre-drop everything. Loops are fun.

Wraith main. Basically spread pressure, get 2-3 at least injured at the very start. A spread pressure Wraith is a lot harder to deal with than a Wraith that just picks a target and sticks on them till they're down (you're likely to lose doing this as Wraith).
If they choose to ignore healing to do gens, they lose faster as the snowball effect comes into play. Especially as resources are destroyed and dead zones are created. Always try to get healed when facing a Wraith. People that don't heal vs him, screw their teammates over a lot.

I honestly prefer that the game focused more on m1 killers and abandoned overly complicated killers and then balance around m1 scenarios. Chases would be a lot more fun if killers didn't have an easy "gotcha" ability of sorts, but those m1 killers would need some sort of buffs that can capitalize on beating someone in a loop or mindgame. At the moment, survivors just have way too many second chances for m1 killers to be very viable - even if they managed to down someone, the survivors usually have a pick of ways to cancel out the entire down.
That being said, I'm taking a break from my main (p100 ghostie), but I usually have my pressure by keeping survivors on their toes at all times - trying to have someone on hook at any given moment while also chasing someone else. I don't have time to stop for gens, so I usually only have surge for regression. Everything else is indirect pressure.
Here's a few things that go through my mind when doing ghostie

Legion main here.
I ALWAYS bring Spirit Fury + Enduring. Feels mandatory. I'm not even sure if I could go back to playing normally, I'm addicted to it.0 -
My fix to slow M1 killers was a proposed buff to Insidious, which would help them a lot, just as STFL did in the past:
Insidious rework:
after hooking a survivor, the killer can press the secondary activation button to step inside the shadow of the hook and emerge from a shadow or unobserved corner at least 16m away from the survivor with the least amount of hooks. The killers terror radius is suppressed for 7s after teleporting or until moving and the survivors aura is revealed to the killer for 3s. In order to qualify as a teleporter target the survivor needs to be at least 24m away from the hooked survivor.
This would offer a completely new way of playing, that would help killers without map mobility immensively, so especially the M1 killers. Right now Insidious is a perk from another time period, that was designed for a playstyle that just isn't viable anymore.

I use Oppression instead of Surge. I find it more useful.

Pig main here.
In regard to looping, there is only one single tile in the game that greatly annoys me. Shack.
I don't think I have to go into why that is the case.
Otherwise, m1 killer have some things going for them.
Sbtlf and surge are extremely good on any m1 oriented killer such as Doctor, Clown or, and especially, Pig.
Playing m1 for me is the purest way of playing dbd. It's mindgame vs mindgame. How much do you know about tiles and survivor movement? Can you predict your opponents next move? It feels pretty rewarding to do play m1 effectively.
Sadly, tiles like shack, strong main buildings and especially pre dropping makes playing m1 a lot worse.
I still like it more than playing Blight, Nurse or Wesker.
On top of it, most m1s have some form of macro ability that is a lof of fun to play around. Managing traps as Pig or condemned as Sadako is peak gameplay for me personally.

Trapper with well placed traps it's that simple.
Currently playing with zero perks and zero add-ons and having a lot of fun.
Only perk I occasionally use is lightborn if 2 or more survivors have a flashlight in pre game lobby.

I really love Sadako, but I can't play M1 killers well because I don't think I'm very skilled. During chases, I feel very weak with M1 killers. Even though I can control generators with Oppression, I end up getting looped too much.
I don't have this issue with M2 killers. For example, Wesker helps a lot in this regard. When he grabs and throws survivors, it completely messes up their rhythm. Killers like Nemesis, Blight, Dracula, and Pyramid Head feel very smooth and easy for me.
But I really love Trapper, Sadako, Doctor, and Pig. As I mentioned above, because they're M1-focused, I end up distancing myself from them even though I don't want to.
My build: Nowhere to Hide, Oppression, Unforeseen, Hex: Ruin (if survivors have 4 flashlights, I choose Lightborn or Franklin instead)0 -
Ghostface. I run Franklin, weave, Surge and painress. All of these addons sort of slow down the pace of the game, That in combination with drivers license so you can pressure gens very far away if needed while you are killing another target. I Dont find gens being a problem at all for Ghostface tbh.

I enjoy both M1 and M2 killers, they bring variety to the game and I would actively dislike it if every killer had some sort of M2 because then the game and potential killer design would become stale and boring.
And the fact that M1 killers exist does not mean they lack powers. The fact that their way of getting downs is through M1 does not mean they can't have very compelling powers going on. Not to mention that, these days, some people won't agree on what M1 means anymore. But leaving that aside, there are many M1 killers that I find much more fun and interesting than many M2 killers, with the prime example being Doctor, my absolute favorite killer in the game. Myers is also a great example of an M1 killer I love and he's the pinnacle of M1-nnerism, lol.
To answer your question, you need to understand what the strengths of your character are. I think that many people struggle with M1 killers because they don't get that having no strong M2 that allows them to get downs more easily =/= having no power to take advantage from. Let's see Doctor, for example. Doctor is a killer with an anti-loop power, decent tracking tools and built-in slowdown. So, when you play as him, your best shot is making use of those features to their best. I personally love focusing on slowdown, and thus go for anti-healing builds with bigger terror radius perks and/or add-ons + anti-healing perks. You can also go for a different sort of slowdown through the use of skill-check perks. Doctor's madness mechanic excels at slowing people down and, combined with even MORE stuff that slows people down, can become lethal.
Let's see another example in Myers. Myers is a killer whose only two strengths are potential for stealth and insta-downing. As such, he benefits the most from either perks and add-ons that help him benefit more from that stealth potential, or from perks which will enhance his potential for chaining insta-downs. Right now my favorite Myers build leans into the latter playstyle, these days I'm running an Infectious Fright + Forced Hesitation + Rapid Brutality combo. And I could probably even get better results from a haste-stacking build to be honest, I just think Forced Hesitation looks silly lol.
So you should sit down and think: "what areas does this killer excel at?" and adjust your builds and playstyle accordingly. Every killer has a power and thus every killer has advantages in some area, even the weakest ones. Of course, a killer being on the weaker end of the spectrum means that you'll have some tougher matches and some matches where you will lose. But if you were interested in walks on the park you would be going for full-aura Nurse builds or full-slowdown Blight builds, not asking about M1 killers :)

I feel very perk reliant when playing M1s. Heavy gen regression, Bamboozle, and stealth perks if no stealth built into the killer.

The problem for me is that it doesn't really do much regression if people are actively on gens. Surge does more and gives a little info. If oppression is working out, that means survivors aren't really doing gens, so gens aren't really an issue in the match anyway.
That being said, if it works for you, go for it.
