Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Am I the only one who prefers original killers over licensed ones?

As a DbD veteran, I always had more fun with original killers. I can count on my fingers licensed killers that I really enjoyed playing for hours, namely Pig, Freddy, and Sadako. I do enjoy Pyramid, Pinhead, Vecna, Xenomorph, Demogorgon, Nemesis, Dracula, but I generally never have a craving for playing them.

On the other side, I have binged played almost every original with some rare exceptions such as Blight, Billy, and Huntress. I don't know, I generally feel like original killers have more pizzazz to them, while licensed killers generally feel kinda stale, specially the recently released considering how many of them have a short projectile meant to only hit survivors locked in an animation (Xenomorph, Dracula, Nemesis, Pyramid, and now Springtrap all have them).

Why do you want to analyse it like this, licensed v. original, do they have separate artists among the devs? Some of the killers they make are well designed and intelligent, some are overly complicated, some are fun for killers but not survivors, some the other way, but it doesn't come down to the legal terms of publishing process. Nurse & Blight are very clever and have a high skill ceiling, Legion is tedious for survivors but fun as a killer, Mikey and Chucky are very unique and clever too and scary, Skull Merchant it's best not to talk of her. Like everything it's hit or miss process, and a lot down to taste.

Honest opinion. I prefer licensed chapters because the developers have to try harder to impress a licensor. More often than not the licensed chapters we get come off as WAY MORE polished than originals do and I feel like its because they really don't have to try AS hard when making originals. I'm not saying they don't work hard on OG Chapters, but do they work AS hard as they do on licensed chapters? My gut feeling is no.

I often feel like their powers and play styles are often made unique to better suit the character in question when introducing a licensed character.

eh, there's plenty of duds to go around for either side of the aisle. Pinheads my favourite killer then there's Skull Merchant in the corner.

So you'd say they put more effort into Skull Merchant over a character like Wesker? Wild. Skull Merchant comes off to me as everything was done last minute.

A small part of me wishes I would be more into the original killers than the licensed ones, since I could buy skins for them with iridiscent shards. But honestly for me it's almost the other way around. My favorite killers are arguably all licensed killers, with Vecna being the very best of them.

For me, the last good licensed killer was Wesker. Considering that I don't like Wesker's gameplay. All the killers that came before Wesker at least look like killers in my eyes. Everything that came after Xenomorph gives off different variations of abilities that we've already seen and nerfs after sales percentage. Houndmaster, despite bugs and awkward controls, is more enjoyable to play than all the licensed killers after Xenomorph combined.

Chucky's size and stealth are different, it's all taste and they didn't get everything right with him and you're right there have been changes but overall I think he and Tiff were great additions to the game.

I read this so often that I actually have to roll my eyes on this (and other popular) „am I the only one…“ statements

As to me, i used to view them on the same level as both were created in interesting ways both aesthetically as well as gameplay wise

Nowadays and tbh for some time already the original content feels lacking, the Killer Powers seem to be hated by the community more often than not and especially on survivor designs it feels to one sided. Always very attractive young successful people that appeal to the mainstream. I enjoyed the everyday-people take more. Also, Shift away from interesting lore like Pariahs towards.. everyone is connected to Mikaela somehow and likes Horror (BUT we also didnt get Julian yet?!?) I don’t hate these charakters but I feel Like they could be more interesting.

Honestly, I prefer licensed content if it is treated right.

For instance, my favorite chapter in DBD is the A Nightmare on Elm Street chapter. Take its original version and it is amazing. Look at it now, and you see it didn't receive the care it should have.

I enjoy both for different reasons

Art wise I feel BHVR hits it out of the park every time they have an OG killer. Power wise I find the licensed killers while not always the most balanced for better or worse have less reason to have to make sense and sometimes end up being more interesting than a power BHVR comes up with for their OG killers.

I would like more OG characters but I've found the powers are usually more enjoyable from licensed content for various reasons. I understand this is subjective and everyone has their favorites but I really feel like we wouldn't have gotten a power like Springtrap if it wasn't Springtrap. Another example is Dracula from Castlevania or Vecna from D&D. I want powers like that for OG killers but I really feel like BHVR needs a reason to make powers elaborate like that and licenses are the perfect excuse to design stuff like that.

If BHVR made more elaborate powers the way they did for licensed content for OG killers I'd always want OG content. But I've just found licensed content to be more enjoyable with some occasional exceptions.

I don't really have a preference in terms of playing, but I am more hyped for original chapters than licensed. I love seeing what the devs come up with.

I love both, not everyones gonna enjoy licenses they don't care for, which is completley understandable. Same goes for original killers, some miss the mark (twins).

the best power designs dbd had are og killers, licenced killers are nowadays just mainly symbiotes of already existing og killers.

This and general character design + lore is why i will always love og characters compared to licenced ones

No preference on my end. I think when you look at almost any killer on the roster, BHVR's consistently done a good job at making the art & mechanics come together in a satisfying way, even with designs I'm not particularly thrilled about (like our latest addition).

I do prefer non-licensed survivors for the most part though, which is why I'm dreading the upcoming survivor-only releases.

    Not particularly.

I think Wesker is one of the best designed killers in the game, my most played killer behind Nurse was Myers, though I rarely ever play killer now.

I actually despise more of the non licenced killers like Knight, Twins and Trickster.

Edit to add a positive contrast: I think the design team do an AMAZING job even if I personally hate the killer. Knight looks incredible and his theme music is just great… I just loathe versing the killer. Killers like Artist and Dark Lord look fantastic and have great music and overall design, even if I don't enjoy versing them personally.

In my experience, the licenses that I was most expecting for (Chucky and Springtrap) ended up not meeting my expectations. Chucky has a playstyle that I really dislike, being a dash killer with no macro skills, which was a real bummer since he was one of my dream licenses. Springtrap felt underwhelming on the other hand, it isn't like I hate his kit, it is just that I don't see myself playing him instead of Xenomorph. The only licensed killer that made me really pleased was Sadako, as I really wished her to be added and she did not disappoint me.

I end up liking original killers more because I generally don't expect nothing from them, and most of the time they end up surpassing my expectations in the fun department. This has happened since Hag, and gave me gems like Singularity, Unknown, Dredge, Knight, Doctor, Plague, Twins, Skull Merchant (the original one), Spirit, Clown, Houndmaster, and Artist.

For me ive always ended up liking licensed more. Ive put 100 prestiges into rebecca chambers/xenomorph/trevor belmont/dracula/ and now 60 into Rize. The only original killer that made me feel like buying every cosmetic theyve ever had / putting over 9 prestiges in was Skull Merchant oddly enough lol.

that's fair, Nemesis feels kind of underwhelming to play too, I love the zombie idea and the mutation but the tentacle whip is like… so tame? IDK how to explain, I just wish he was more in depth.

When it comes to fun, I think both licensed and non-licensed killers have potential, but licensed ones tend to have more unique or creative powers.

Yeah, I agree 100% with this. Lots of original killers have really unique powers, like Singularity, Twins and Dredge, but just look at the licensed ones: I don't think the devs would have ever created those underground tunnels for a power if it wasnt'for Xenomorph, or a really small third person killer if it wasn't Chucky, or alternate ways of killing the survivors if it wasn't for Pig and Sadako. Not to mention Pinhead, one of the most unique killers in the game! Even when a killer's main ability is a bit redundant to another's, like Nemesis' tentacle feeling like a weaker Pyramid Head Punishment, they still come with something unique, like the zombies! And is far less common for then to have bland, redundant or boring powers.

On the other hand, I must say I tend to like far more the character design of original killers. One of the things I like the most about DbD is how creative their killer concepts are and how good their visual and sound design tend to be. Some licensed killers are greatly-designed horror legends like Xenomorph, Pyramid Head and Pinhead, but others, although they may be good on their respective stories and franchises, don't look as scary in DbD in comparison to other killers in the game, like Wesker, Kaneki and Springtrap.

Years ago I would have said I preferred original chapters (killers and survivors) but these days I tend to prefer the licensed ones. The bar just keeps getting higher and licenses have an easier time clearing it. I don't think there's a single licensed killer I actively dislike, but there are several original killers I'd remove from the game if I could.

On top of that, I'm far more likely to be attached to a licensed survivor, coming from a work that actually has dialogue and a real story, than any of BHVR's originals.

Yeah sure there are exceptions. Skullmerchant was definitely rushed.

It could have been good if they put more work into it.
