Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Where Fantastic Four First Steps went wrong

I want to start out by saying that, although I enjoyed the new fantastic four, I can't help but feel that it could have been a much better film. I think there are mainly three mistakes that were made with it, that hurt it overall:

  1. No Doom as an important recurring figure throughout the film. That's the biggest mistake. There are some villains that put butts in theater seats and some that don't. The Joker, Magneto, and Lex Luthor, for instance, are all characters comic book fans are deeply invested in. Especially since they continue to tie into the universe as a whole. Galactus, on the other hand, is handled more like a villain of the week than a returning character. The "one and done" of it all makes the film feel more shallow.
  2. Asking too much too soon. In writing, there are certain "asks" you can do once you have taken enough time get the audience attached to the characters. Expecting people to be entertained by a cosmic Sophia's choice and spending a great deal of time creating tension around philosophical questions works well once you're a couple of films or books in. It doesn't work as well right from the get go, in a genre more inclined to blowing up spaceships and alien invasions. Asking the audience to deeply care about Sue and Reed's relationship and Franklin should have evolved more naturally.
  3. Stepping away from the more action oriented fare to become a family drama instead. Now, this is in no way saying I hate motherhood or girl power (though I have exactly ZERO interest in babies whatsoever) But I question making that literally the ONLY thing going on in the film. If the film has started off with Galactus invading, with tons of action, and the fantastic four also having to do battle with their usual band of villains, the film would have had more to offer. If Doom had made cameos all through out the movie, and it was the build up to the new Avengers film, and people felt they HAD to see it, they would have gone to the theater in greater numbers.
