Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

The Issue at Stake Here Is Not Balance But Competitiveness

Sometimes tunnelling happens because the Killer plays very aggressively and hounds someone out from the start. Other times it is because individual Survivors or the Survivor team as a whole makes mistakes– not healing promptly, not taking chase, not completing side objectives, bad positioning etc– and facilitates tunnelling. There's also the kind of tunnelling where partway through the game the Killer recognises that their win condition hinges on getting a given Survivor out of the Trial. The first kind sucks, and I think is the correct target for system changes. However, with the new PTB rules, if a Survivor is tunnelled out in any kind of context, the Killer is potentially penalised as a result. Doing your job well and feeling like you're being punished for it feels bad. Add the fact that the buffs for non-consecutive hooking feel more like a compensation than a reward, and are of limited use to many Killers, and it's not a surprise that many players who play Killer are upset at the proposed changes.

Whether or not this is balanced is less of an issue (because the answer is complex and subject to so many variables) so much as whether or not this is fair. If a Survivor led a Killer on a really long chase, and then as a result all gens got blocked for a 20 seconds because they hadn't hooked anyone yet, that would feel bad to the Survivors, not because of balance but because of fairness. The principal motivation behind 'competitive' games is that excellence should be rewarded and mistakes punished. Ultimately this is going to come down to whether or not BHVR and the DBD community see the game as a competitive game or not. If it's competitive, then I don't think the anti-tunnelling changes should go through as is, though there's still scope for trying to make not tunnelling a more viable strategy for Killers who struggle to do otherwise, possibly by changing more perks to disable when a Survivor is sacrificed. If it's not competitive, then implementing mulligans and 'play nice' rules like the anti-tunnelling system makes more sense, but there will also need to be an assessment of a lot of very strong Survivor perks and items that, when combined with the new changes, provide comparable shortcuts to tunnelling.

I'm all for seeing some nerfs to the survivor meta perks. I'm also fine with increased gen completion times. Why not some smaller maps? I'd be fine with just about anything that would allow these measures to go through because it's not uncommon for killers to leave people to bleedout for the whole timer for fun, or to proxy camp a hook until someone goes second stage and then tunnel them out as soon as their unhooked. These are garbage actions that need combating.

And yeah, killers already have a mechanic to help them in chases they're doing poorly in. If someone takes you on a 90+ second run that allows 3 gens to pop while your tier 3 bloodlust and you still cant catch them then I don't know what to say to you.

And yeah, doing your job well and feeling like you're being punished does feel bad. That's how I feel when a killer gets no hooks with all gens done but manages to slug everyone at endgame and there's zero way to comeback from it without specific perks.

I for one am looking forward to them bringing back the feeling of DS and unbreakable back before conspicuous actions were introduced and survivors would just sit on gens in your face knowing you literally can't touch them, pick em up you get stunned, knock them down and leave them they get back up. That was so much fun as killer. I totally look forward to having to ignore the bad survivor that keeps on running into to me because if I hook them and kill them I lose the match and if I slug em they can just get up over and over again. I also look forward to accidentally bringing down the punishment on myself because I don't pay attention to who has been hooked or count hook states or if I get a lobby of identical looking survivors. This update looks like great fun.

my solution to tunneling would be to just give up on this TCM idea of hooks and embrace My Little Oni/F13 and just give you one life, able to be instantly morid. that's an immediate end to tunneling right there.

I'm not against the idea of the new changes, it just seems kinda convoluted.

This is a party game. It's not meant to be competitive.

I never played it, but from my understanding this exact feature was literally one of the nails in the coffin for Death Garden.

oh yeah? I never got to check out that bhvr game seems it was before my time.

only thing that sucks about my idea is that mistakes are a bit more severe but with it maybe we could go back to the more survivor sided map layouts. one life on meat plants doesn't sound bad to me, but old new old new haddonfield would just be terrible.

I really dislike the idea of your second reason. "Damn guess I better take the kid gloves off and tunnel some one out" this is a joke if you can play unoptimally in most matches and only need to make the best call in though situations then the game has a fundamental flaw.

Your first reason tunneling out from the start is 10x more honorable in my opinion your playing optimally and taking the game and survivors seriously. You didn't make tunneling so effective the creators did and by that virtue they condone it as the best strategy.

But now that they are coming for this really unfun game mechanic people are creating justifications all over the place. I would accept the disagreement of the killer who acknowledges that he tunnels from the start and it's the optimal play most scenarios you are having to completely change your style but others complaining they can't just cheese the game anymore when it's inconvenient is wild in my mind.

Funny now they will nerf the pig hardest they ever nerfed her with all weaker killers which isnt good and I fear they will not buff or rework these killers faster than obe year and do what they did till now just release op killers like chucky and ghoul which then get skins and after some time hard nerfs thats bhvr realnactivity instead buffing killers from 2017.

See that's clearly where your wrong. This is a party game not a competitive game where your supposed to either carry water for the survivors enjoyment or play s rank movement heros and sweat for a 4k. No in-between.
