Endless Halloween Festival: Betwixt the Veil - Mikaela, Sable & Tryks All Along đźŽ
Last time, we explored the idea that Julian wasn’t just Mikaela’s friend, but possibly The Unknown in disguise. But what if the real antagonist was hiding in plain sight? What if it was TRYKS all along?
Looking at the lore side by side, the connection between Mikaela and Sable feels lopsided. Julian plays a clear role in Mikaela’s story—he records her shows, submits one to the Endless Halloween Festival, then disappears after her summoning. Sable, on the other hand, only shows up in her own entry, constantly framing herself through Mikaela (“Mikaela got me a job,” “Mikaela went with me,” “Mikaela accepted me”). Mikaela never mentions her once.
That imbalance makes the friendship feel hollow—more like projection, or even manipulation. Add in her name (“Sable” = shadow, concealment) and she starts to look less like a side character and more like a hidden hand. Like Agatha Harkness in WandaVision, she could be quietly steering Mikaela toward the Fog while masking her true identity as TRYKS.
All signs point to Sable not just being Mikaela’s "imaginary best friend," but the orchestrator of her downfall.
Netflix analogy: Marilyn Thornhill was the main antagonist, posing as a friendly “normie” teacher while secretly orchestrating events.
Disney analogy: Agnes / Agatha Harkness. Hidden antagonist, posing as Wanda's nosey neighbor friend while quietly orchestrating events theme song, Agatha All Along.
1. 🎠Fractured Identities: Comedy vs. Tragedy
At first glance, the Comedy vs. Tragedy mask seems to belong to Mikaela and Sable.
Sable's Lore Evidence:
"Mikaela liked her horror with a little comedy, but Sable liked it meaner. Scarier. Bloodier. She relished the gore. Enjoyed the terror. Liked to feel the adrenaline rush. And their debates were entertaining to say the least."
This frames Mikaela as Comedy and Sable as Tragedy—but that’s only the setup. The real fracture is Tryks and Sable:
- Comedy = Tryks → chaotic, playful, unsettling.
- Tragedy = Sable → stoic, inevitable, cold truth.
Mikaela was a decoy. Tryks is the true Comedy mask to Sable’s Tragedy, two halves of a single fractured identity.
2. đź’Ś The "Annual" Endless Halloween Festival
Julian submitted Mikaela’s performance, so on the surface, he appears responsible for her acceptance. But read between the lines: Sable (Je-Zable) orchestrated everything, nudging events so Mikaela ends up invited. Julian is the unwitting pawn. Mikaela’s invite even echoes Tryks’ "Guess who’s invited" from the Twisted Masquerade.
Lore Evidence:
"Julian, her best friend and roommate, recorded some of her shows and posted them online. Also, unbeknown to her, he submitted one of her performances to the Endless Halloween Festival where renowned storytellers performed on stage for Halloween." – Mikaela's Lore
"Not only did Sable understand the dark side, she revelled in it. Naturally, she convinced her best friend Mikaela to tell a real horror story at Moonstone’s Annual Halloween Festival. Tell them a story about The Unknown and make them believe in it." – Sable's Lore
Sable is the mastermind; Mikaela is walking straight into her perfectly staged setup.
3. Mikaela – The Bridge Between Julian/The Unknown and Sable/TRYKS
Mikaela draws the attention of two sinister forces. The Unknown, parasitic and hungry, feeds on fear. Meanwhile, Sable/Je-Zable observes from the shadows, testing Mikaela’s resolve and abilities.
Mikaela's Lore Evidence:
"Mikaela stayed up all night filling her notebooks. The nightmares began that night - dragged down stairs, thrown into dark basements, pierced by iron hooks. The more she finessed her Halloween tale, the darker they grew. Exhaustion and stress left her distracted, her magic drained. As she neared her car, she felt watched, whispered a protective spell, and clutched her keys. A shadow leapt across the wall - she ran, locked herself inside, breath ragged. No one was there; Perhaps it was her nerves playing tricks on her."
Key Point: Could that shadowy figure have been TRYKS, mirroring Sable/Je-Zable lurking in the darkness? The line from Twisted Masquerade—“You got tryks. Get it… tryks!”—feels eerily relevant.
4. The Finale
Sable's Lore Evidence:
"One evening Sable had challenged Mikaela to tell a real horror story at Moonstone’s Annual Halloween Festival. Scare the crap out of people. Stop dancing around the horror and embrace it. Tell a story about The Unknown. Make them imagine it. Make them believe The Unknown will show up on stage. Nothing terrifies an audience more than a show that could potentially kill them. Mikaela laughed at the idea and declined the challenge because she was working on another story with her roommate."
Mikaela's Lore Evidence:
"On All Hallows’ Eve, Mikaela told a story that mattered, breathing in the wet Autumn wind and acrid coffee, her heartbeat slowing as crimson darkness deepened behind her eyelids. She spoke of disappearing friends, hidden victims, and eternal night, declaring no darkness was beyond light. Thick black fog engulfed her and no one saw Mikaela Reid again."
Sable's Lore Evidence:
"Determined to see Mikaela again, Sable hitched a ride to the theater. She noticed the cold, black fog rising from the lower depths. The same cold, black fog that had taken Mikaela—and she decided she wasn’t going to let her best friend have all the fun."
Key Point:
In the crowd’s shadows, Sable’s presence lingered - unseen, yet guiding. Each dark tale whispered Mikaela closer, until at last the circle closed and The Fog claimed her. Drawn more by the Fog than Mikaela’s fate, Sable willingly stepped into its depths - the only survivor to do so, fueled by her own dark curiosity.
5. Intertwined Lives
Julian may not be the Unknown - maybe he was simply claimed by it. The devs never name-drop, which makes it feel intentional. TRYKS, aka Je-Zable (Je = “I” in French, Zable = Sable), shares the same eye color, hair, and even hair buns echo Sable’s “Winged Pate” cosmetic. The pieces line up too neatly to ignore.
