In this case, let's say the genre would be mystery/adventure.

The universe is interesting enough that I would. However, I'm a bit of a story snob so it would have to be good. I'm gonna be honest—I haven't read a single good plot from the game thus far. Dwight's lore has him drugging people casually (more than once) like it's nothing, Jane seems really whiny, and David's coming out story was like a YA novel had a baby with a late-90s rom com and called itself a cultural shift. Harsh, I know. But that's why I'd require it to be good. 😝

Depends on which character or what kind of story.

    That's unfortunate.

I really liked the Legion's lore (guess that is why they made a full comic for them), and also Nurse's, but I know that is an unpopular opinion (I really like the descent into insanity)

I can't bring myself to read most of the overlong in-game lore because I find it boring and poorly written. The more I learn about the characters the less interesting they often are. I assume actual novels would be more of the same. The lore doesn't engage me at all and often overexplains.

I watched streamers play The Casting of Frank Stone, another example of what a DbD story could be like, and I was not impressed by that, either.

Strangely, I like the bits of lore BHVR came up with for Meet Your Maker. I'd be interested in more stories from that world. (Would the magic be ruined the moment they try to write characters for it? Ugh, that's sadly quite possible.)

i don't usually read and I'm not gonna buy it but if it was on a website or in game then I'd probably binge it because I have nothing better to do

It hits everyone differently, which is fair.

It very much depends. DBD's lore is amazing but the writing quality isn't always consistent. Canon lore novels also run risks with quality control.

Being a loser who reads the canon Magic the Gathering novels, I can not stress enough that quality control and communication are important for these things.

The premise would interest me, but the quality of the writing would be a concern for me.

Sadly, DbD's lore is riddled with spelling mistakes, contradictions, and odd editorial and narrative choices.

It's licensed so I can't say it's entirely BHVR's fault, but Jill's lore of "She escapes from Nemesis, runs into a basement and opens a chest, only to surface in the realm 😱 " is criminal to me.

Yeah the Resident Evil x DbD lore was not good… Not sure whether BHVR or Capcom is to blame for it, but it was laughable either way. I think it would've actually been better to leave the circumstances of their entry to the realm up to the imagination if they couldn't (for licensing or other reasons) come up with anything more interesting.

Yes i would, and frankly i don't agree one bit with any of the things all the naysayers in this thread are saying about the lore.

That's where I'm at with a lot of it to be honest. I think what we come up with individually for ourselves will always be more meaningful than the lore we're given. We play these voiceless characters constantly and change them to look the way we want, change them to perform the way we see fit, so why not impress our own story onto them as well?

    Yes

My experience with game novels ranges from okay (Bioshock: Rapture, Dead Space novels) to dreadful (the Resident Evil books) and DbD would probably be bad but yes, I absolutely would. I've really been wanting one. I'm a big fan of physical books and I'd also like a hefty character reference book with all the current lore organized within it.

They would have to hire a proper writer though and not whoever makes those embarrassing messes on the in-game bios.
