Current DBD is kinda of a mess.

I'm returning player, started playing a month after launch, started to take breaks during the 4th Anniv, being playing Solo Queue Survivor and ocassionaly Killer during these times, i keeped checking on Updates during those years to see if thing improved, and on paper, it sounds like they did, until i tried to play and notice that even if BHVR did 2 steps foward, their follow up with 4 steps backwards.

Quantity over Quality: This seems to be the Motto of BHVR, and their history don't let them lie, New Killers releases bugged, a bunch of skin constantly released every patch, perk and addons cleary untested, the list goes on.

Killers: Every new killer is a generic anti-chase Killer, even tho they look different they do the same thing, hit over obstacles, get free hits, vault of pallets/windows and have some kinda of hypermobility, most of them are the same killer with different skins. Also New Killers have their hand be hold all time when it came to their powers, which is weird, Vecna misses his M2? well he can spam it no problem, Springtrap Missed a hatch? The CD is low and he don't even need to reload like Huntress so no punishment for missing (I feel you pain Huntress main), Kaneki free hits and mobility make Legion look like child's play, we don't talk about Krause…

Survivors: SWF still strong, yet Survivor nerfs only trully affect Solo Queue, nothing changed at all. But for me the worst offender is that 2026 and the best build STILL Exhaustion Perk/ DS / Unbreakable, like bruh, everything else is so bad that if players want to have a chance to escape they need to use the same build from years before, atleast make other play styles interresting other than Second Chance stuff, Stealth is dead because of Distortion Nerf and the ridiculous amount of Aura Reading Killer currently have, Healing still pointless because Killer have alot of free hits and why heal when you can spend that time doing gens anywayyy.

Addons: With the amount of Killers in the game and Survivor Items, have to know every single Addons to not get screwed by it is just stupid, there are more then 700 addons, and the fact you have to guess every game is just delusional. That also make balancing Powers and Items extremely difficulty, because if something have a drawback, you can just use a Addon to remove it, Medkits are good example of this, that also make Killer's Powers downside nonexistent, which just defeat the purpose of having a downside in the first place. Honestly Addons should be gone at this point.

The End: The game got better in alot fo aspects, Killer is not unberable like it was before, but still not great, Anti-Face Camp feature, Large maps gone, pallet density and safeness, Insta-Heals gone, etc… Yet it feel all those changed amount to nothing or atleast marginal differences for before.

Honestly, for you players, that almost never took a break, and still play til this day, how do you do it? When the game feel like is going in circles? And please don't tell me is because of Licensed Killer and cosmetics.

If you're new or returning after years, there's a lot of stuff to learn and it's way to much to ask of people, particularly as survivor with there being so many killers to learn, plus their add-ons and perks. I wouldn't want to be starting this game for the first time.

But personally i think people think they need meta perks more than they do, they're just too afraid to venture away and try odd builds. I've never used DS, DH, or most Exhaustion perks. Dont use Windows either. I'm running a stealth build right now and my ER for the last 30 days—with over 200 matches—is 62%. And that's mostly soloq. Everyone is so used to seeing the same perks all the time that off-meta is more likely to catch your opponents off-guard.

Feel like killer is the opposite problem though, you pretty much have to run meta perks on a killer. Sub par killer perks just straight up don't work well and won't trigger much, giving you little or no advantage.

Idk I keep the meta to a minimum with killer too. Some killers I run aura builds, some undetectable, some anti-sabo. People not figuring them out in time because they expect pain res DMS every match helps me quite a bit.

TBH I feel like any build is fine on killer as long as you know it. Even on pallet city the game I do alright with my spirit hex build survivor is disgustingly bad though I dont even think trio swfs are in an okay space unless you are comp level 4 man and it's just not good for the game.

I agree with @CorgiSploots. Killer is more stressful to me personally, but I feel you can make just about anything work so long as you play well. Regression is a nice bonus to buy some time, but the best pressure available is downs. Currently my build is anti-heal Springtrap, Sloppy, Thana, Nurse's and a free slot, using Ripped Curtain, and despite no gen regression by default, even against good teams it mounts good pressure due easy free hits from certain doors. The only killers I feel pigeonholed into certain perks on are set up killers, specifically Trapper and Hag.

That being said, there's definitely a litany of killer perks that are so situational they border on an empty perk slot.

I dont disagree with people think they need meta perks, but the lack of agency for both sides make people be inclined to use them, for example when you are playing Killer with no Gen Regression and you played very well yet Gens flied so fast, it create this scenario when you get yourself think "If i was running X, it could be avoided/delayed", when you go against Solo Queue survivors this feeling is less prevalent atleast for me.
