can bhvr be convinced to keep the tomes?

i feel like the devs are trying their best to remove any unique aspect of dbd for the Fortnitfication of the game.

change rarity colors which no one asked for, remove flavor text from perks, removing rituals and replacing them with the most generic challenges and calling them "quests" instead. a lot less focus on the lore or complete abandonment of it for several tomes., the closing of this very forum.

and now the tome challenges which had the most unique set of challenges in the game are getting removed.

so my question is, is this really necessary? is the existing of the tomes really a big burden on the game/devs? is there no way we can keep them?.

changes like this on top of shutting the forums down make me wonder if we are nearing the end

Unfortunately, I don't think they will change their mind. I agree with you that they got rid of a lot of things that made DbD unique. For whatever reason, they seem to think this is the best path forward.

DbD has a lot of time left, given the player count even if they just kept the status quo release schedule it would take a long time to bleed off the players to the point the game was no longer profitable. However, it is possible that they might think Jason would be the final high water mark.

I don't understand why they won't make 2v8 or at least that ruleset permanent. They created the most toxic multiplayer ever known to man and then fixed all the issues that made the game toxic in 2v8 and yet they only let us play the good version of the game 20% of the time. In the standard game at least 80% of matches I play involve same level of camping and tunneling toxic behavior. In 2v8 its <1% congrats on fixing the game and never letting us play the fixed version.

I don't think this is The End. But it is the beginning of the end for classic DBD and it definitely feels like a concerted push towards 2027 being a kind of year zero for the game.

BHVR seem to be keen to clean house to be ready for the release of a DBD 2 in everything but name. The only difference being that they're maintaining some continuity to avoid doing a Blizzard. We get to keep our progress and whatever licenses we have unlocked, but it will still be more or less like playing a new game. That's my impression, anyway.

There have also been times that the Tomes have caused bugs or had to be reworked whenever certain perks have been changed. I imagine they also don't want to do the work necessary to rebuild the old Tomes to play nice with the upcoming re-coded game engine. That said, it is a huge shame to see them be left behind (they kept me very busy when I first started playing).

BHVR don't seem to care at all about preserving the history of the game, but then again nothing is forever in a live service game. I very much doubt they will change their mind.

It is a crying shame the tomes are going, I find them a lot more fun than the quest system. It's so much more interesting, got me using different characters and perks to do specific challenges and I enjoyed unlocking the lore drops.

By comparison the quest system is super boring and unrewarding. The challenges are super generic and don't encourage different playstyles.

late reply but yeah completely agree.

i like the quest system for sure it makes getting rewards a lot less tedious and if bhvr doesn't wanna do tome challenges anymore i understand.

however why are we removing existing ones? tome challenges are a big part of this game's identity imo they're very unique and encourage different ways if playing i don't see why they should be removed.

The only 'good' reason I can think of, and I'm echoing @tjt85 here, that is has to do with cleaning up the code for the new engine. I'm not a fan of doing it there, but at least I can understand why that might be necessary.

But I feel its more like you mentioned in your original post - they are just getting rid of unique elements and want DbD to feel like other games (which, in my opinion, is a huge mistake).

What I have observed by reading Betahub bug reports the challenges on tomes seem to break decently often and they have to use time to fix them. Then as big chunk of people have done those challenges its a bug fixing that effects only part of the playerbase when they could use that time to fix bugs in the normal gameplay. So I would imagine this is also another reason why they are removing the challenges.

The tome lore is being moved to Archives feature so the lore is not going to dissapear just the challenges.

If you're a killer streamer and you whine hard enough, you'll get whatever you want from the devs

Sure, but people could also go and just read the lore online if that's what they wanted to do.

Unlocking the tomes created a unique, DbD themed way to reveal things. It made the lore an unfolding story, not just a 'lore dump' as is common in most games.

Unfortunately we crossed that bridge a long time ago.

They're dumb-ifying things for sure, but DBD is BHVR's one cash cow, they're gonna keep it alive for years yet, even if a lot of it becomes unrecognizable, Fortnite-esque slop.

Maybe it is for the bug reason. Some of the old tome challenges are impossible today also as solo.

The daily quests are for the rift progression and easy so that you log in every day.

I liked rituals also way more than quests. And at the moment we have like 5 rotating?

Repair 3 gens, unhook 3 survs, get chased for 30 secs, play 1 game and earn 30k BP.

Dbd has unfortunately decided to cater solely to new players. (Which is honestly the best thing for them to do.) They are doing this by slowly removing a bunch of the bloat, knowledge checks, techs, ect. Its pretty unfortunate to see a bunch of skill expression and unique things leave the game.

The thing is, the challenges gave new players something to strive for, to get some extra points, and really try certain perks/builds/killers. Quests just complete themselves in a normal game. I haven't seen any quest that requires using a certain perk or accomplishing anything other than standard game events. I've still got loads of challenges left, despite always having 2 challenges selected almost all the time.

This is another way variation is removed from trials, and now if someone is playing a little different you can't give them the benefit of the doubt that they may be doing a challenge. No more killers allowing survivors to complete a glyph and have a little moment.
