Thoughts on the new Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

The game making the big return of the series has been made by the devs of Dead Cells. Though I have played every Castlevania and enough dead cells to defeat Dracula in its Castlevania DLC, I'm having a tough time trying to like the new Castlevania.

To start, you play as the weakest character in the entire castlevania series, where your weapons feel like you are hitting enemies with a plastic spoon. Even the lowliest skeleton is capable of taking hits from your spoon and then just kicking you in the face mid combo. Shes supposed to be the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, but certainly weaker than both.

The Boss fights are like your first attempt at playing dark souls or elden ring where she shows up with spunky one liners only to get beaten 10 or 15 times before she actually wins. And the worst part is how they put platforming in the bossfights. The game also can't really start until after you get through the first bossfight finally, which would lead some people to drop and refund the game early.

The platforming is over 85% of the game to a point where they even made the enemies into platforming tools, while the other 15% was the attempt at making the game's combat. Enemies have no stun frames, so they hit through your attacks with ease. Your dodge does not grant invincibility frames, so anything attacking you while dodging will still hit you anyway. You can change weapons from a plastic spoon to a wooden spoon, that does just about the same thing.

Overall im trying to get into the game regardless and wont refund for the sake of castlevania's future. But its certainly one of the least fun Castlevanias in the series.

I would still hope that Rose Belmont would make it into dbd with Trevor's older bearded look as a skin as well.

But i've started to notice a trend in that dbd doesn't time their extra content with a license - with their new game releases as re9's release could have been a promotion opportunity just like Castlevania Belmont's curse.

that's a little disappointing to hear. I was hoping this game would be hype like SotN was.

I saw somebody on Twitter explaining how to setup the difficulty options in such a way that the game has a similar feel to... well, y'know... an actual Castlevania game.

Are there options for enemy health & player strength?

I'm really enjoying it, it's just hard to start with and you gain power rather rapidly.

Yea theres a whole bunch of settings and sliders for damage you take/give etc. One thing they brought from dead cells is customisation to make the game easier at the cost of achievements etc.

So far reviews are mixed on steam. Some are complaining about the female character to play as (which isn't a new thing to the series so the complaints don't make sense), even saw one complaining that she doesn't use the vampire killer whip and then everyone just rounded on them saying Trevor Belmont still has it with him lol. Majority of complaints are the compatibility with steam deck.

My only complaint with the game is its very tough to get started unlike all the other castlevanias. I've died atleast 50 times aledy where any other Castlevania you'd die maybe 5 times in the whole game, 3 of which from Learning Dracula's attack patterns lol.

It took a while to find a decent weapon With enough reach to not get hit by every 3rd enemy lol.

One big difference as well is they give you the ability to mark your map. Thus making you have to manualy mark everything you can't reach otherwise there is nothing on the map to say "you missed something here" other than the black fog that covers the map until you've been to that area. But if your view can see that area then the map gets filled.

Its also rather soulslike in that you have limmited healing potions and you are meant to die often but still gain experience with each kill - which gaining a level gives you 1 attack 1 defence causing you to grind sometimes if you are really struggling with a boss. (Kinda had to grind in some other castlevanias too)
