Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Depends on who has the license rights for Ash, but probably not.

If Bruce himself owns them (which I believe is the case as he did his own voice it seems and we got just him, no killer or map from the movies), he may have came to an agreement with them. However if its whoever owns the franchise rights (which may be Bruce, idk) they may have required cash only store use.

I doubt it. They get a percentage of all sales revenue for Ash, and being able to purchase him without cash is a huge no-no on a licensee, unless the licensee personally pays the the royalties out of their pocket.

For example, let's say Ash is $4 and the holders get $2 of that (normal rates on a license average around 23% not 50%, but I want to keep the math simple here). If they negotiated for Shard sales, and then sold 10,000 units with the shards, they would usually still have to pay the $20,000 in royalties, but out of their own pockets.

@Kilmeran I really appreciate that you said the normal rates, I always wondered. Thanks!

I worked on Evil Dead licenses back in the table-top game industry. Bruce, himself, doesn't own Evil Dead or Ash, just the rights to his own likeness. For Evil Dead itself, at least back then, you went through Sam Raimi's people.

Ahhh okay. I wasnt sure how that went with the different movies and tv show and everything.

It's just been my speculation since we heard survivor only and bruce seems to look like bruce haha.

So he does at least own his own likeness, but they had to get the license from X person for the name and franchise connection? Good to know.

Yeah, after the initial licensing fee, which can vary wildly (for example, under George Lucas, just the upfront fee for a Star Wars license was a minimum of $1 million), royalty rates range from 18% to 27% of gross sales (not Net Sales), and you can negotiate from there. I've rarely had any go below 23% without a lot of struggle.

Note: Star Wars was another exception to the rule, and under George Lucas the royalty rate was typically a non-negotiable 50% of gross sales.

When we did Highlander, for example, they wanted $22,000 up front, and 25% royalty. We eventually got them down to 21%, but it took a lot of talking.

Keep in mind, too, that is usually Gross Sales, as I said. So, if Valve takes a % for selling on Steam, that is not calculated in royalties owed. They're paying on the actual MSRP value.

Sometimes, too, the licensing fee can be divided into an annual installment plan over the first year. Naturally, Star Wars wouldn't do that, but Highlander offered to break that $22k down into four payments,

Correct. An Actor typically always owns their own likeness, though the production studio for the TV or film has rights to it per the original work contract for certain things: Marketing, repeats, et cetera. For licensed products like Toys, Video Games, et cetera, one typically needs the actor to sign on.

Now, there are exceptions to that. Star Wars, for example, was always able to use the Actor's likenesses in toys and so forth that they then licensed. Marvel Studios is the same with their actors. If you do a Marvel film, Marvel owns the rights to your likeness and is able to automatically license it out to tie-in toylines and the such.

For a vast, vast majority of TV shows and films, though, that is not the case.

Now, I worked on the Evil Dead license a while ago. Back then, you went through Raimi's company for the franchise rights, and then Bruce's people for his likeness. Given that Campbell and Raimi are so close personally (they were basically childhood friends that made Evil Dead together and launched each other), it's quite possible that today things have been restructured somewhat between the two of them so that they own Evil Dead together. That, for 2019, I cannot speak of with any authority.

Yeah I knew he and Raimi were close, which is why i even began to think he may own the rights differently than most situations, but was all speculation. Thanks for the legitimate info!

Nope, ash will bring the new survivor crutch perk, so of course that will be for cash only
