When and How should I start playing as a killer to play him effectively?

Okay, okay I know that I'm quite new to the game - I've been playing DBD for 3.5 months - and I'm still learning new things about it. Even when I know every single perk and how/when use it I still struggle with some things.

So the main question is: When and How should I start playing as a killer to play him effectively?

I really like playing survivor (rank 14-10) - Claudette Morel and Kate Danson are my personal favourites - but playing as a killer is way more interesting and fun for me... but... I think that I suck on killer very hard without any high-level perks.

Does perks matter that much or is this my stupid feeling?

---

All of mine killers are around level 5

---

If it matters that much can somebody give me a piece of advice and give me some tips to play as a killer?

My favourite killers are: Legion, Spirit, Hag and Nurse, but I dislike: Cannibal (Letherface), Doctor, Pig and Clown.

Other killers are neutral for me but I will read any tips to them.

Other things: I don't have any problems with looping but I struggle when I'm patroling the gens; My map awarness isn't that good as i lt should be.

    Here are some tips:

1° Learn your playstyle, do you prefer a fast killer who doesn't depend that much on his/her hability or do you need a "smart" add to your chases by using things like the axe throw from the huntress or the stalking of GF and Myers?

2° Learn what perks do you good. I prefer close encounters and chasing rather than ambushing (The Clown, The Legion, The Hag and The Doctor), so I use perks for me to move quicker and do maximum damage (like NOED).

3° Try every killer and see what you like. Do you prefer knowing where to go and easy targetting the survivors? Then use Myers, GF or the Doctor. Do you prefer an easy down of a survivor? Then use Legion, Huntress or Cannibal.

4° Play as survivor and then use the bloodpoints to upgrade your killers. If what you need is a little advantage, upgrade them first, then try them. But, if you play as the killer since level 1, you'll get good with the killer regardless of the perks you use.

Play the Hag. If survivors start running in circles around the same object or through the same pallet without pulling it, plop down a trap along that loop to force them to relocate. If you see them run toward a trap, start spamming the teleport button so you can zip over and take a swipe the moment they’re in range.

I second the suggestion of using the Whispers perk. Sloppy butcher is also an easily accessible perk that may buy you some time.

Play each killer for 2 rounds or so. You'll eventually find one that 'feels' better than the others.

Wraith and Trapper are fantastic (and free) Killers to start with.

They are as basic as Killers can be, while their Powers can still be used in different ways than just "Place Bear Trap at Pallet" or "Cloak immediately to regain movement speed".

For example, you can be like: "Hey, they probably don't expect a Bear Trap here." or "If i cloak now, i can block that window and get a hit in."
