Why do the generators not light up/glow sometimes?

Brand new at this game, and glad I found these forums. I've been playing for two days and never had a problem seeing the generators light up as a killer. However my wife started playing and they never light up for her. Neither do the exits. I believe she was using the Trapper. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
