Occam's razor says they use the survivor's camp fire, since the pre-match lobby screen makes it seem like they have to pass by the fire anyway.

Nah, they toss it in as they're going by or stop to put it in.

Well if the survivors sit by the fire before a trial, and killers have to chase the survivors into the trial area, then the killers most likely have to pass by (or through if they wanna be extra metal) the fire.

The survivors and killers do indeed interact at the same campfire, and it's easy to come to the conclusion, based on the "killer on the outskirts" quote that they approach the campfire when the survivors are or nearly are asleep and do their sacrifice then. They possibly might grow bold, and stand just outside the light of the fire.
It also makes sense that the survivors aren't worrited about the killer standing there, since one of the only rules that never changes is that the killers cannot attack the survivors at the campfire. Within that campfire, they're safe.
