Finding it really hard to pip as survivor and killer

I feel like I do really good when I play dbd and it’s so hard to pip with the new ranking system. Is there some magic formula to 2 pip? I’m trying to get rank 1 killed and survivor and it seems insanely hard. Any tips?

Haha same dude. I really don't care about rank, but once I get down to red I always get a little more mentally prepared for sweaty teams or sweaty killers.

But yeah, basically, if you kill everybody quickly you won't pip up. You basically have to hook every survivor at least a couple times, and try to end chases sooner than later. The quicker the chase, the better you score in that category. Getting M1 hits on survivors helps you pip up too. Every time you whack a survivor you get points towards that specific category. You also get points towards rank for interrupting survivors from doing gens, healing, or other activities. It's a lot. Seriously. But basically if you're constantly putting the pressure on survivors, getting M1s, and hooking them at least a couple times, you'll probably pip up. I've had 4K games where I didn't even pip...so it's not even about whether people escape or not, which is weird at first.

As for survivor, you need to get chased a decent amount, do some gens, get an unhook, heal somebody, and do co-op actions. Whether you escape or not doesn't matter. What matters is completing these actions. Boldness, Altruism, Objectives, Survival. Get a little bit in all of these. As a survivor you get more points towards ranking the longer the chase is, and you get points for escaping the killer as well and making them lose track of you.

All of this is basically why I don't care about pipping. I just play to have fun, and in the process end up in Red rank for both killer and survivor. My best advice is, don't play to get a 4K, and don't play to escape. If you try to rush through gens and just run out of the door immediately, you won't get rank or bloodpoints AND it's boring. As a killer, just trying to kill everybody super fast isn't fun either. Only sometimes that is...lol

    What's a pip?

If you do well at the end of the match and it says +1 or +2. When you first start, you need 4 pips to get from Rank 20 to Rank 19. Once you get to higher ranks, you need 5 pips. You can see your pip progress in the top right corner by hovering over your rank. They look like little shards.

Thank you. I've been seeing the term a lot but had no clue as to what it was. I feel like a bit of a numpty now for having to ask.

    Short version:

As survivor: Try to do everything. A good mix of gens, hook saves, and one or two decent chases will allow you to pip (depending on your rank). Most of the time when you don't pip as a survivor, it's because you were only doing gens, or only saving people, or you never got chased and hid the whole match.

As killer: Honestly just don't play like a dick? If you don't tunnel and camp and you actually hook everyone a couple of times, try to keep gens from popping, and hit people, you'll pip. Most of the time when killers don't pip, it's because they camped and tunneled people, killed people too fast, and on occasion let gens pop too quickly (it's usually the camping/tunneling tho)

Tunneling won't depip you buddy. Maybe camping will, if somebody dies on their first hook, but tunneling has basically no ranking penalty. Now if you tunnel and chase somebody for 10 minutes straight and all the gens get done, and that's the only person you kill, then yes...you played badly. But if you hook a player 3 times, kill them, and simultaneously defend gens in between hooks it really won't effect your pip.
