Running vault not working

I am struggling with the running vault mechanic. I have read that there have been reworks to it but I don't exactly understand how it works. It seems that almost every time I try to perform a running vault nothing happens, and I end up running into the wall. I lose chases because of this and it makes the Lithe perk pretty much useless. I've asked other players and I've been told my game might be bugged.
