Does the Tome feel more grindy this time?

I'd definitely more than halfway done with all the challenges are just barely halfway through the rift. I know there will be some challenges in level four that I'm not even going to try to complete. There are already some killer challenges that for my sanity, I'm not even going try as a survivor main.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like they aren't making as much progress this time as they did last time? I know we have 34-35 days left, but oof.

i did all the challenges in the first Tome but this time around, i've only done the survivor challenges. i might do some of the killer ones but any that require being toxic or playing like an arsehole i'll be leaving. to me its not really worth it and it doesnt really make a difference to me or not if i don't get ALL challenges done.

I want to get the full cells out of it so I can buy the next one without spending more real world money. After I take a very long break from this game.

I cleared the tome and rift to 70 last time

ive done maybe 2 challenges this time due to the grind/burnout/design choices i hate being added

i get that. depends on how often you play, you can usually reach tier 70 without doing all the challenges anyway. i know its harder from some people though not everyone spends a lot of time on the game.

Yeah I hit level 70 last time too. The burnout is real.

I got to level 70 last time without doing all the challenges but I just feel for the amount of time I'm playing this game every day, I should be farther along. All these battle passes in every game is a full time job if you want everything out of them. Oh well. I'll get there eventually. I was just wondering how everyone else was doing.

This rift will be the last one I buy, the first one was just okay but this one is more grindy.

I've literally grinded out my rift to 68 now and once it's done, I'm not touching the next one. The challenges just feel like they're the same each time, but with a little extra added for the difficulty. I do enjoy unlocking the lore, but some of the challenges just bring out the most awful playstyles (Looking at you Key challenge!)

I’m in the mid 40s. About a third of challenges left to do in tome 3.

I worry that the challenges in the final tome wont be enough to take me to tier 79. Then again there are at least 30 days left.

Worst part is you could easily skip the last one since there was junk at the end but this time they locked some good stuff including the final piece of the Feng cosmetic right at the very end.

I think this Tome is more grindy, but I think that's a good thing. None of the challenges in this Tome even come close to the difficulty of some of those in the previous one, they just take longer to do. One of my main complaints about the last Tome was how quickly you could work through the challenges, because the more time you spend doing challenges, the less time you spend grinding levels through pure XP. So I think a grindy Tome is a huge improvement over a grindy Rift.

I think the first time we had more time, i think. Don't quote me but i thought T:1 was released later due to something but the Devs gave us the progress for that time that was supposed to be on.

The Rift is a grind. But I play Daily and I've gotten to level 57 on it, so I'm definitely on track to finish.

I like that it feels earned instead of just pay to win. Makes the skins feel more special to me

If I had to guess. Too many people finished it through game play and didn't have to pay real money. Getting people to pay real money for the tiers is the whole point of Battle Passes. That is why they started in F2P games.

  • Fibijean
    Fibijean Member Posts: 8,342

That's also true. A lot of people started the last Rift somewhere between tiers 5 and 15.

I didn't buy this tome because it was way too grindy. I don't want to dedicate everyday to this game just to get some recolors and some new cosmetics. Also, some of these challenges require a lot of games to achieve them. That should never be the case. A challenge should be able to be completed in a match or two, no more.

    Hail_to_the_King Member Posts: 183

I 100% feel that if you finish every challenge on all 4 tome levels then you should go to tier 70. That being said, I absolutely despise the challenges that require so many emblems of a certain rarity whether it be a specific category or not. I hate them. I would much much prefer it be bloodpoint based instead of emblem based.

  • Fibijean
    Fibijean Member Posts: 8,342

I think challenges should be like achievements - some of them easy, some of them difficult. If all of them are completable within a match or two (assuming by that you mean a match or two's worth of attempts, not theoretical progress), they're hardly worthy of being called "challenges". Though obviously, a balance needs to be found in how Rift progress is affected.

I actually think they've come a lot closer to hitting that balance this time - this Rift, by my calculations, should take about 70 hours in-match with all challenges complete, but it could do with being a little less grindy, since they once again appear to have failed to factor in time spent in queues, lobbies, loading screens etc. between matches.

  • LemeTheMeme
    LemeTheMeme Member Posts: 403

The thing is, you're approximate is purely that, an approximate. The amount of time a game takes is about 10-20 minutes. Finding a match is anywhere between 5-10 minutes as survivor, to instant as killer. There are also more survivor challenges than there are killer ones. I don't agree with it being an "achievement" because this is a battle pass, and they come and go frequently. I don't feel like I've "achieved" anything when I complete these challenges, I feel actually underwhelmed that the first challenge as a survivor takes 5 games to beat IF you escape, for 15k bps and a little progress on your rift.

I don't want to spend 70 hours in game to complete one pass. I don't just want to sit and play dbd everyday for hours to complete it. The grind is not worth the rewards in my opinion. Not to mention that 70 hours is inaccurate due to the waiting times with finding matches, sitting in lobbies, loading screens, players not loading into matches, etc.

I just have the level three "get five gold unbroken emblems" left to do and have made it to tier 52 so far. None of the killer ones are toxic to me this time around except the by your hand kill the obsession one that's geared towards the rancor perk but can be done with a Mori. They took some of them from last time, bumped up the numbers, and made it so you don't have to complete it in a single trial, eleventh hour, so you can grind through them with regular play instead of having to play toxic. Otherwise they're mostly just using the killers power. A few of the survivor ones were incredibly difficult for me but with enough mild grinding I've managed to do all of them. Level 4 seems like it's gonna be really grindy to me seeing all the "get x amount of x color emblem" that have appeared in the other levels so far. To answer the op though ,yes and no, some aspects are more grindy (emblem, unhook, and sacrifice challenges) but others have been made easier (looking at you lore challenges).

  • Fibijean
    Fibijean Member Posts: 8,342

I think the distinction to be drawn here is that the challenges themselves don't come and go, they stick around forever, which is why I say that a balance needs to be found between that and how they affect progress while the Rift is open. For example, if one were reasonably able to complete the Rift by doing most, but not all, of the challenges, I don't think it would be a problem if some of them were particularly difficult because you have all the time you need to work through them. It's only a problem if the difficulty of the challenges increases the Rift completion time exorbitantly.

Level 3 is definitely more grindy than the previous two and definitely less fun. Way too many of them involve having to escape, and it doesn’t help that when I am a survivor (8) I keep getting matched up with survivors even worse than I am, and when I am a killer (rank 16) there is often at least 1 red rank survivor, two 8s, and maybe a 15 (if I’m lucky).

I think is the same. I've finished on friday and still have about 10 levels of unclaimed challenges because I'm saving up the bloodpoints for the new chapter. It's true that I had more time to play this rift but still, on the other one it started count about two weeks before the challenges actually came out and the challenges are easier this time so:

1- The games played 2 weeks before the challenges came out in the first rift makes it seem that the first one was less grindy.

2- The challenges being easier makes it seem that we need to play more "non challenges connected matches" than before because we can finish the challenges in less matches.

Last rift I did every challenge and was at tier 56. The grind was terrible and ended up paying to end it.

I'd rather my goals not dry up while I'm playing. Otherwise it feels aimless.

See i feel like this one is less of a grind than the last one.The challenges were more toxic in the last one. We have a few this time around but not as many as last time. Did you ever post the survey responses by the way. I was curious to see where respondents fell.

  • meatisadelicacy
    meatisadelicacy Member Posts: 1,920

Yeah I think it's insane that doing all the challenges doesn't get you closer to tier 70. I've been playing almost daily and am about to hit level 39, with most challenges done. It's just insane that this is a full time job. I will not be spending more money on this, so all it does is discourages me from buying the next. With the way everyone plays differently now just to get the challenges done, I'm taking a long break if not permanently leaving this game after more than 1,000 hour in it.

  • Fibijean
    Fibijean Member Posts: 8,342

I'm still working on them. My life has been quite busy the last few weeks, and the survey was more work than I expected. There are over 1000 responses, with about 15 questions in each one, and I have to enter every answer manually into a spreadsheet in order to be able to properly make links between them (because the software I used to create the survey doesn't allow me to draw comparisons between questions along the lines of, for example, how many of the people that completed the Rift bought the Rift Pass). But it is definitely still coming! I'm very sorry for the delay.

Same. I'm doing the hatch challenge now using plunderers instinct. Do I have like 15 keys? Yes, but I don't want to use them.

My matches go (Did Plunderers give me key?) -> (Okay, can I find the hatch?) = no. You can't.

Rinse repeat. I'm getting some neat toys out of it but when Tome 4 comes out and if I still don't have it, I'm skippin it or making it a background play challenge.

Too Grindy. I am at Tier 53 at the moment. This is the last one I will buy. I love the game but this Rift grind makes me not want to play DBD for at least a few months once I'm done. DBD is starting to get stale and tiring.

  • meatisadelicacy
    meatisadelicacy Member Posts: 1,920

80% of the people playing the game are survivors. Survivors queues have always been longer for me. Maybe there should have been two different sets of challenges. I know some of my frustration comes from trying to play killer just for the challenges, and not only being inexperienced, having weaker perks and almost no add ons, but being matched against red and purple rank SWFs against my level 17 killer. There's just nothing enjoyable about it.

  • meatisadelicacy
    meatisadelicacy Member Posts: 1,920

I'd love to be at 53. I just barely scraped 40 today and I've been playing almost daily. It feels like homework now. I will be taking a long break if not parting ways entirely. I don't think the devs will scrap the tome and it affects play, at least on the survivor side, too negatively for me to keep up. Even if I don't buy the rift, I'll be in games where people are only trying to do objectives. I'm very done with that.

  • Nestoche
    Nestoche Member Posts: 11

Believe me, it wasn't easy for me to reach Tier 53 it was exhausting and not so fun after a while! lol

I agree what you are saying!...I think this Rift was a good idea but I think the way it's implemented is too much work/grind. Something needs changing like maybe offer less cosmetics/Tier's? and tone down the grind a little. At my age the Challenges are a little easier from Level 1 but gets harder and frustrating at higher Levels trying to repeat them if you fail the first time.

I am getting a little tired of playing the game and the thrill is gone and the fun is not there anymore like it use to be when I first got the game back in 2017. Now I am playing everyday with really no care or excitement just to try and catch up just to finish at Tier 70 before the Rift expires.

I'll be done for a few months or more once I finish it until I get the itch again to play but no more grinding....can't do it anymore even though I have the time since I am a retired old man (59 years old) that wants to play other games before I can't anymore!!.lol

It's the idea of money scheme behind it. Charge you for a new rift pass every time a new one comes out. The challenges also require to buy a character you may not have which leaves you at a disadvantage. For example, I dont have Jane so her challenges using perks on her are useless to me. Which means I'm missing out on potential rift progress.

Some are grindy without a doubt, others like the challenge encouraging NOED is just scummy but it's more to get you to buy every character as they want you to play with 'all characters, not just ones you want to'.

Main reason why I just dont care for it. Blood points and that's it. Heck even the archive reader talks like he isnt aware of full stops and commas xD

Idk about grind but there are like 5 killer challenge and 20 survivor ones. Why not make challanges like do 5 gens or kill 5 survivor so we can play and enjoy the game as we like...

It's been the same for me. I got tier 70 in the first one before the last level (4) released. I've been tier 70 for a few days now and finished level 3 of the second tome so just in line like the first tome for me.

im only on tier 40 and will defiantly grind until i get that sweet blue hag skin but i have dreaded doing any survivor challenges for a while and i think that after this tome i will burn out and not play for awhile

Hey dev's you know how you could reduce the grind? Make it so we get fragments for doing daily challenges PLEASE.

I asked them why the discrepancy and the devs seriously said they wanted to encourage playing more survivor and have fewer killers on at once

  • smappdooda
    smappdooda Member Posts: 546

I posted this elsewhere and yes. Especially if you play solo and don't have "ALL TEH PERKS!" unlocked. (I play killer and only started playing survivor for rift stuff) Many of the survivor challenges would FLY by if I was in a SWF group but I don't play that way. Thus, like many things in this game, the solo/SWF gap is apparent in these challenges. It took me HOURS to get certain ones done (I'm looking at you emblems). I almost uninstalled it was so frustrating. The last tome, I actually really enjoyed the survivor challenges and thought they were a nice break from playing killer. This time around, it was the opposite.

There is challenging and then there is just frustrating and pointless.

I think they did a pretty good job so far on making the core challenges require no DLC content with additional branches for DLC content.
