Why do an overwhelming amount of players not use cosmetics?

tea Member Posts: 140

Basically title. Cosmetics are one of the best things in the game, imo, other than the actual gameplay itself. It keeps the game visually fresh and it's fun to customize different outfits.

Playerbases from games like Overwatch and Fortnite are huge on skins and customization. But in DbD I mostly see characters in their default clothes or bloody prestiges. Especially strange to me since so many cosmetics can be bought with shards without spending a dime.

You see i mostly play killer and cosmetic on them are useless you dont see them so i will never pay for that and the game you mention you can unlock a lot of skin just by playing while in DBD the skin you unlock by playing are the bloody one and dont forget you pay for the game you pay for some character and if you add skin on top of that this can be expensive for some people specially when every new patch come with a bug or 2

I usually see around 1/4 players using some sort of store cosmetics. Almost everyone uses the base free ones or the bloody ones. Been playing since '16 and it's always been this way, even after the Store went live in 2.0.

Yeah you don't even have to pay for full sets. I pay for the best looking bits that go together well.

Well, I like the idea of NOT BEING SEEN, so buying a neon or bright outfit really doesn't help me and I buy all the DLC outside of Leatherface (hate his playerbase and kit) and Ash (never going to use those perks!) but if they were to go on a mad sale, then I would.

And none of them look that good for Yui. I get the idea, but it doesn't work on me.

Personally, i like playing with a character on default customizations. I do this on most games tho', not only on DBD. That is to say i won't switch sometime when i feel like it, but 90% of the time you'll find me with default outfits. 😄

Only one reason. Too expensive, even with shards

I just refuse t spend money on cosmetics when there are other things more pressing in terms of fixes. When the game becomes more stable on console, maybe i'll be inclined to spend some cash. It's a shame console optimization is just a myth.

Most of the cosmetics cost more than the characters themselves. I think that it’s rather ridiculous. Gee, should I pay $5 for a survivor or killer I don’t have access to or $12 for a silly outfit for one I already own? What to do... what to do...

I cant bring myself to pay for cosmetics . I'm sitting on like 87000 shards and my son is like spend some.

On what....a pretty dress. No thanks

I have a bunch but find that I get tunnelled and camped if I wear anything as the majority of cosmetics are apparently "toxic"...

I do not want to draw attention to myself as i find it hard enough to get away from the killer. If i really want to get away i have to use all perk slots just to do that. Iron Will, Dance with me, Lighweight and SB. All just to get away cos i cant do 360's and disappear like some people do. I am an old man. The hands and reflexes are not what they were when i was young.

That’s an awful lot of shards. What are you going to do with it if not for cosmetics? Trade them for bitcoin?

People might like the default cosmetics or they don’t want to pay the insane prices for them. Who thought it was a good idea to have cosmetic prices higher (and in a lot of cases twice that) than that of a new character in a paid game? 500 Auric Cells or 9,000 Shards for a character versus 700-1188 Cells or 13,500-21,900 Shards for a cosmetic. It has to be a damn good cosmetic for me to justify paying those prices.

most people arent whales you know. Also all our shards are spent on new characters so we cant use em to buy skins.

Why would I waste shards for cosmetics if I can buy perks and DLCs with them?

Also default claudette outfit is the best on every map. The only other cosmetic that is worth getting is the P3 claudette, but you cant buy it with shards anyway

  • fleshbox
    fleshbox Member Posts: 494

No, you have to slog through three complete bloodwebs and hope you get decent perks fast on the last one

  • Archimedes5000
    Archimedes5000 Member Posts: 1,620

Yeah I know, thats why I use the default claudette.

Its the best outfit on the second best character in the game, Ace doesnt have camo outfits unfortunately

    Watery Member Posts: 1,167

    Simply put, Chic ain’t cheap.

Most people have to pay bills THEN get cosmetics.

Some people may just like the default.

There’s so many contributing factors to go against being able to get cosmetics, setting aside ten dollars isn’t exactly easy when you have to cover gas money, bills, and whatever else life throws at you (prescription drugs, Check Engine Light coming on, Natural Disaster), all of which are a pretty penny.

People may also not feel like spending money on cosmetics as they are PURELY cosmetic. It’s not worth the money for some people, and that’s okay.

I personally spend some money on cosmetics, because if I’m gonna die as survivor, I’m gonna die pretty.

  • Archimedes5000
    Archimedes5000 Member Posts: 1,620

Because bloody one are the only that are worth getting. There are very few outfits that give you advantage, and even less are for shards. Basically default are one of the better ones, or even the best (like claudette)

  • fleshbox
    fleshbox Member Posts: 494

The darkest moon days are over. P3 claudette can actually be harmful on quite a few maps now, being so dark. I wish they would help us stealthy in am not in the killers' face all the time players a bit more. Not all are able to go one on one against the killer. I can hold them off and get away but not often. I try to waste as much time as possbile for the team but i will get caught the longer the chase goes on or they give up.

most of the cosmetics look like emokids.

gimme decent bill cosmetics and i ll buy them. sadly they have to ask valve for this .(

A lot of the diehards do wear cosmetics. Otherwise some people aren't buying stuff on principle, and the others probably just don't have money to spend. The few that play stealth probably don't want to buy the brightly colored loud outfits, lol. Some of the outfits can be $10+ or an insane amount of shards. Most people are going to use those shards for characters. Takes like 40 levels to get 9000 shards. That's like 160 matches if I'm not mistaken. That's a good bit of time. I'd rather get a free character, perks and all, than one outfit for a guy I already have. Personally I'll just wear my Prestige and Event stuff, and use my $10 for the Rift pass.

Honestly, the killer cosmetics kinda suck. I’ve spent a lot of money on video games in the past and would do it with this one too. But Hilbilly? I don’t want to be a park ranger with fireworks on my back. Legion? Wow a different color hoodie. Demo? Chains lmao. Nurse? Another 1800s outfit. Give us cool skins and I’ll pay for them. I think the huntress and oni ones are probably the best, they’re really different and a lot involve gore. Also the hallowed blight ones are cool but everyone has them so no point in paying.

  • HectorBrando
    HectorBrando Member Posts: 3,167

I dont use cosmetics because most of them are flashy and is easier to spot you from a distance, Id like to stay as stealthy as I can both as Survivor and Killer.

  • karatinac97
    karatinac97 Member Posts: 210

I must admit I have paid for some cosmetics, probably a bit more than I should have but not too much. I usually get shards to buy new survivors and get cosmetics with the rest. I think I've paid for 3 full cosmetic outfits (Steve's Scoops Ahoy, Nancy's winter outfit and Kate's bike outfit). Then I buy stuff with shards and mix and match outfits. I personally think some of the mix and match outfits are better than a lot of the full sets.

I do notice a lot of people with the original outfits though. But sometimes I'll be on a team with full cosmetics, it just depends.

WHY ARE THE BLOODY CLOTHES NOT OUTFITS?!

  • Mister_xD
    Mister_xD Member Posts: 7,669

maybe they dont have the money to spend on cosmetics?

maybe they dont want to waste their shards on them, as they are "useless" - especially since the killer cant really see them himself - and rather save them up for upcomming chapters?

or maybe they just prefer the base skin?

personally, i love nothing more than customizing my characters!

some of the cosmetics killers have are incredible, and the original ones, imo, got a little stale after plalying with them for so long.

I feel like the majority of people I play with/against use some sort of cosmetics, particularly survivors since they don't need to swap between survivors constantly.

But I can see why not everyone does it. Some people just don't care what their character looks like to begin with, and others are very proud of their prestige (yes, even though it may not be a big deal to you or me).

  • bendermac
    bendermac Member Posts: 772

Price is also a major issue why people not buying any cosmetics. The prices are way too high (auric cells and shards). This is the reason why BHVR is not seeing any money besides for license DLC (characters only) from me. Sorry guys, but $10 for an outfit is just overpriced junk. But don't feel bad. I don't support any other game developer with overpriced cosmetics. Capcom was the 1st who got me voting with my wallet against them in Street Fighter 5. $1 for a standard outfit and $2 for a premium outfit and I'd be in. But $10? HELL NO!

  • Stitch7833

because P3 Claudette is a thing, why buy cosmetics when you can have the advantage by having a slimmer looking model with the darkest of outfits. Also the same characters keep getting outfits and the prices are still way to steep for a single outfit. ill use the rift or the free ones but thats it, not gonna spend a bunch of money on 1 cosmetic when i can buy new games to enjoy that give me time away from a broken/unbalanced mess half the time

It probably also has to do with the fact that the cosmetics in this game are extremely expensive. Roughly $10 for skin isn't great pricing for people. I purchased a few skins here and they are at that price but I'm very conservative. It has to be something I really like for a character I really prefer to play.

to be honest on xbox I have tons of cosmetics and use them frequently but on pc I just switched and I really don't want to spend the money again on them so all my survivors are basic as well as my killers

I am extremely proud of my prestige. Which is why we should get the bloodied cosmetic's as an equipable outfit when we get to p3. I don't want to equip each one individually.

Also prestige should be shown in the end game lobby screen since we don't have it around the campfire anymore.

Also K-pop outfit for Feng Min.

A friend of mine who also plays this has got it in his head that bright cosmetics get you spotted easier.

When I play killer I'm like a t rex, if the survivor is moving I spot them pretty easily. I don't find myself spotting colourful survivors easier myself. But maybe it helps some survivors feel better to use default darker skins

Because I come from an era in gaming when added content meant adding gameplay. I have no interest in visual style, I want proper gameplay and new content that changes how the game is played.

  • MongolPSR
    MongolPSR Member Posts: 1,032

The game itself is over monetized. Skins for survivors and killers, pay for the base game, pay for the dlc, pay for a battlepass. I know and understand they need to make money somehow but at a certain point this model becomes toxic to the consumer. I personally only buy the killers unless the survivors have really strong perks.

people may say you have the ability to not spend money on there game but I'm not thinking about or concerned with how I spend my money, as I can make reasonable financial decisions for myself without to much of an issue. I'm concerned with the people who have addictive tendencies or are unable to say no due to a variety of reasons. This could be that they are children who don't understand the value of a dollar, or someone who has no impulse control and is mentally sick in a way that is exploitable.

I got few cosmetics back when I enjoyed playing the game a lot.

Aaand there is a fact that cosmetics in this game are ridiculously expensive compared to everything else.

I like the idea of battlepass before it was introduced but I'd have to live and breethe this game with my every free moment which I'm not willing to do due to how tedious it gets at times.

    So... rip.

  • Spectre13

I like the cosmetics aspects but the pricing to get them is kind of ridiculous. This is why like Overwatch I think their should be loot boxes with cosmetics inside as prizes for players maybe once a day as an incentive like the daily rituals are. I know people will consider it "gambling" but cosmetics have no effect on game play unless you are dumb enough to equip bright colors and flashy stuff in a very dark blue map (coal tower, McMillan estate etc)

I see Killer & Survivor non-default cosmetics in an overwhelming majority of matches on PS4. Some may be prestige garments, some may be Rift, but most are from the store. I don't know if it's a difference in platform culture, maybe?
