Problem about Killer stalking in the Lobby before the game
Hi,
For quite some time, my community and I have noticed a problem that could easily be resolved in the game. The fact that the killer can see the names of the survivors in the lobby before the game is quite problematic, because he can see our steam profil, and then, later on, find us on twitch or another platform of streaming.
This problem can result on camping and tunneling in the game.
If their could be a possibility of showing the names of the survivor only after the game, that could really help that unfortunate situation.

The problem is not knowing who we are playing against. Players also have full control over this information (Steam in this case). Hiding information about DBD (such as hours of play) is possible. Changing nicknames and deleting old ones is also possible.
However, we should be able to use a single identity, for consistency and publicity, without fear of special treatment. I am also sensitive to inequalities, and here the treatment is unequal: either we hide this information for all the players (including the survivors) in the lobby, or we show this information for all the players (including the killer).
But ultimately, the critical point is the behavior in the game. Camping and tunneling are always a problem, not just for streamers. And there is no point in answering “legitimate strategy” by knowingly ignoring what we are really referring to.
Furthermore, the message posted by the killer is reprehensible. And disclosure is prohibited on the forum. I invite you to delete the images or to censor the nickname.

The problem can just be resolve if we see the name after the game and not before in the lobby. That will prevent the stalker to see the steam profile and how much hours we play. Sometime, the guys exit the game because we have a lot of hours in the games and the kilelrs look the hours of play. And somtime, the killer stalk my stream. I don't want to change my name.

Stream sniping is not the dev's problem nor will they start banning snipers.

Raptorrotas, yes it's a game problem because you can see the steam profile in the game. That can be resolve easily and the game will be least toxic with stream snipe.

I used to stream, and toxic problematic ppl love to harress streamers. I understand you.
Anyway, giving players names in the lobby screen is unecessary.

Deadgavin, they can see you previous name on steam. Why we can't not just Hide the survivors name. I dont want to have a other name...

You shouldn't need to hide your information to play a video game. The only thing that can be said about this is that OP is able to put a stream delay so it's not as close to real time. There is no reason whatsoever to know who the survivors you are facing just like there is no reason to know who the killer is in advance. It's not the same as seeing their characters and items.
All seeing the names encourages is for opponents is:
- Lobby dodging.
- Stream sniping.
- Changing loadout based on who is there. Not due to their characters or equipment but because of their name, friends list, etc.)
- Griefing.
The only positives are seen post match for reports/props. There is no benefit to seeing it prior to the match for legitimate gameplay reasons.
It don't take very long at all. Most people that do PC gaming at least tend to got two monitors.

Why I need to change my name Reborn2020 ? If I want to play with my real name and not a fake name ? Why the killer can see my name and stream snip me and me I can't see is name ??? I don't know why the killer can see Survivor's names before the game...

I honestly think they need to lock the player and killer once they get in a lobby (level up other survivors/killers before finding a match), and let both sides see each other. If letting a survivor see the killer hurts the killer that much which it will prob hurt some killer a lot, then they need to buff the killer. I would prefer better counterplay than just random killer who can see all the survivors and stuff. And yes they should not let you see their names before hand, the killer should not play differently if it's swf or not and shouldn't be able to try and find out before the game.

Also, no. I like to have a vague idea of what and who I'm up against.
Seeing player names really helps with that. You can use it to identify potential SWF players and toxic or offensive people. Like, sorry, but if one of the survivors is names "Suck my dicc faggit", I want to know, and he is going to get tunneled and die. Fully deserved.
And honestly, I don't want ANY extra protection for Streamers. They have work hazards like any other job. No special treatment for our "celebrities" please. We have enough of that in the world already.

I understand your point, but it's not just protection, but the logic of not seeing names before the game. Not seeing the names would also mean that there might be less trolling for the names chosen.
I consider the first comment of @sharkio but like I say, I don't want to play with a fake name .... I want to play with my real name and without having the pressure to make me stream snip.
Another good example of not seeing names before the game, it has already happened to me and other people to receive messages on the killer's steam for boosting .... Yes, messages private from the killer before the game just because he can click on our names and send us a message directly.
I don't imagine how much some people can take advantage of it, so just removing seeing the names before the aprtie would solve many small problems like that simple, but disturbing for certain situations.

Change the lobby names to "Surivor 1", "Survivor 2" or something, we have to track names somehow, if there's 4 people with the same outfit, how can i distinguish them?

- Make yourt profile "for friends only"
- Hide your playtime
- Hide your friendslist
- Don't use t.tv in your name or somwhere else on your profile
- Change your nicknames and delete previous ones
- Enjoy
Alternatively DBD could have its own profile with no link to steam. On this porofile you should be able to chose what is shown and what is not.

As a killer, I record my matches for personal growth to review afterwards to understand how I can improve and how I failed. Killers are not shown player costumes after the match. I have to look at the lobby screen to visualize the survivor costumes with their names to then correlate the end screen perks, addons, and offerings with their costumes, by using the name to match them up.
As a survivor I was shown how to find the killer's identity anyway. I hadnt used this information, cause I just play for fun in the moment. If I die, I die.
Survivor's still use this information to equip flashlights when they see I am spirit, nurse, wraith, etc. Once they even changed their character at the literal last second to a character which was preloaded with 3 sets of flashlights and party streamers, which I found interesting cause I gained a mass load of blood points when I won!
If you are streaming, that is your own fault. No one forced you to stream. Make your profile private. Make your steam name different than your stream channel. You are protesting that you want to publicize your stream, without publicizing your stream. *Shake my head*

This seems like a good change to make, it would be good to see it implemented. I suspect the resistence to this change actually comes from career killers who want to take advantage of the information that can be gained from players with minimal privacy controls on Steam... Which doesn't make for a convincing justification against the change.
This is a blatant straw-man argument; No one suggested that stream snipers be banned, so your attempt at derailing the thread is not helpful nor appreciated.
The problem is more fundamental than just stream sniping. Particularly at high ranks, knowing who you are playing against can easily be abused to gain an added advantage just from prior exposure to the player. There is no legitimate game-play reason that this should be allowed in the pre-game lobby.
Suggesting that every player waste time between games changing names, clearing aliases etc is ridiculous - Steam is a social platform and friends should be able to find us in their friends lists without us being forced to make it difficult for them by changing names every 10 minutes.
Finally, those suggesting that this is anything more than a trivial change for the developers to implement, that they'd need to "code a bunch of things" as opposed to just commenting code out, does come across as someone speaking from a benighted position - You clearly have no programming experience and it would be best if you refrained from expressing flawed assessments on the effort required.
Again, changing names and clearing aliases may be acceptable if the only game you play is Dead by Daylight and you have no intention of talking to people on Steam between rounds; If you do either of these things, or value your right to a player name, then this simply isn't an acceptable solution.
Whilst I respect that you are not a streamer there are people who do and they should feel comfortable advertising their stream to their Steam friends without having killers stream sniping. The most prominent way of doing this is the Steam Playername. This is a well-accepted standard.
To propose that players should run through a laundry list of checks and changes to how their Steam profile works just to play a single game reverses the onus of responsibility for providing a well-designed product from the Developer to the Consumers and I couldn't disagree more with that.
Now the change here would likely take all of 5 minutes to implement. I don't believe it is a tall ask for Behavior to save every player in the OP's situation the trouble of reconfiguration their Steam Profile settings, and then changing their name and clearing their aliases every round.
Finally, you completely torpedoed your own argument by referencing the fact that Behavior have already intervened in this space to prevent Survivors seeing the Killer's player name due to it being abused. (Achievement/stats checking) - Killers could have easily hid their achievements to stop this, but they didn't and nor was there any expectation that they should, so what's good for Killers is good for everyone else

Yes, this change would take all of 5 minutes to implement.
The reason for this is BHVR simply need to open their development IDE, find the class file responsible for the generation of the pre-game lobby UI, find the method that includes printing the names, and comment out the lines of code that actually show the names. From there they'd simply need to commit the change to their code repository so their continuous integration server can build an artifact etc. This is by no means a complicated or time-consuming process.
With regard to time for debug, release to steam etc; These are Release overheads that are static regardless of how many code revisions are in the release, and no one is suggesting that BHVR release a version of the game with just this change in it. Conflating Development overheads with Release overheads makes it pretty clear to any knowledgeable person that you possess very little development knowledge and experience. If this is a space that interests you, it would be best to read up on Agile and Waterfall development methodologies, in addition to learning to code and contributing to some open-source software projects to gain some experience.
But the facts of this remain simple:
- The OP has demonstrated a use-case where displaying player names in the pre-game lobby has caused negative outcomes for streamers.
- There are also other negative outcomes that having player names visible in the pre-game lobby facilitates, such as stat sniping and unsociable behavior ("getting even") following across games.
- No respondent thus far has focused on a positive use-case for having player names visible.
- It is a trivial change to implement.
- Behavior have intervened in this space before to protect the privacy of Killers who were, by your logic, too lazy to change their profile privacy settings and should have done so. (As you so helpfully pointed out)

Admire the dedication Skarkio, even if you're really clutching at straws by trying to propose some quasi-legal justification in response to what is fundamentally a question of good player experience. However, your argument is fundamentally flawed yet again for the following reasons:
First, even if this change were a question of contractual law, which it is not, one must remember that the Steam Privacy Policy outlines responsibilities between Valve and users of Steam. It does nothing to minimize or transfer any legal or moral liabilities that BHVR has to its customers, as these are not subject to the agreement concerned. (TLDR: The Privacy Policy is legally and morally irrelevant to the responsibility of BHVR to provide a game that is fit for purpose to consumers)
Secondly, this is not even a question about contractual law, this is a question about "How can we make the game better" - Technically BHVR has no legal responsibility to do anything players want, but I don't presuppose you're suggesting they turn around and say, "NO MORE UPDATES: We're not legally required to change anything so we'll just take your cash and stop improving the game. No Ed, Keys, Moris, Hatch, SWF are all here to stay as is. As are God Loops and Coldwind. Swallow it and give us more money." - Stop being ridiculous. (TLDR: This isn't law school kid. This is about good game design. BHVR are not required to do anything we want, we're merely making suggestions, and this suggestion would make the game experience better - No one has countered that point.)
Thirdly, to demonstrate the difference between Moral/Ethical obligations and Legal obligations: If I worked in retail checkout and a person with disabilities was having issues carrying their bags, technically I'm not required to help as it isn't within the purview of my job description. That person should have come prepared with a support person. However, no one would suggest that is the right thing to do. In this case, the facts outlined in my previous post still apply. Same principle applies here as it does to all reasonable player suggestions. (TLDR: Just because BHVR doesn't have to resolve issues that cause some players grief, doesn't mean they shouldn't. EG: Key tips are displayed to help people know what keys to press even though they could just read the Wiki and this would save developer time.)
Fourthly, If 5 minutes of BHVR's time can save 0.1% of their player base 1 minute and/or the grief of being stream-sniped, stat-sniped, or trolled across games, then the change is worth it. This is elementary math, time spent by the developer vs time saved across the player base, eliminating pain points for players, good customer experience sorta stuff ya know? (TLDR: There's also an economics argument for the change that aligns with providing a good customer experience that remains unrebuffed by contributions thus far.)
Finally, your concerns about "Implementation cost" and "Issue responsibility" do nothing to detract from the validity of the idea and the positive impact it would have on the game. BHVR are more than capable of making their own decision on whether or not they have the time to make the change or whether they want to take ownership of the issue, without you presupposing positions for them / worrying about what is fundamentally their business. Our role on these forums as players is to make suggestions that would improve the game, and then to debate whether or not we like the suggestions, why/why not, how it could be made better etc. (TLDR: Stick to debating the idea, the positive/negative impact it will have on the game, and leave the implementation cost, issue responsibility and prioritization concerns to BHVR - That's their job, not yours.)
