Ghostface: OP or Perfect

Hi everyone! I have a question that has been posed to me on multiple occasions about Ghostface. I’ve heard and read lots of different opinions on Ghostface and his killer setup, his power, and his perks builds, and have seen lots of ratings where he either placed in lower tiers, or even higher B tiers, so it sparked a question in me. What exactly are people’s opinions on Ghostface as a killer in general? For example, do you feel like Ghostface’s power is too powerful or too weak? Do you feel like his add-ons or personal perks are to powerful or weak? And is Ghostface a top played killer for you, why or why not? Personally, I love Ghostface so much, he is one of my mains. I feel like his power is great, and I love his character build in general. I’ve always had a fun time being able to crouch and peak around a corner just slightly and stalk a survivor, and I love the fact that some of his add-ons reduce how far a survivor can be to reveal him. While I think he has an amazing power and build, I feel he definitely isn’t one of the best killers in the game. Much like Michael Myers, once a survivor is fully stalked by Ghostface, they can be instantly downed with one successful basic attack. However, I feel this is balanced, in that he gains no other buffs or advantages when fully stalking a survivor. Once fully stalked, he can instantly down a survivor, but a survivor using dead hard, or even just good at evading can just as easily avoid him, with pallets and shear skill. So does this make him underpowered? Would giving him a small burst in speed make him too powerful against survivors without dead hard or speed perks? Are his perks too weak, and could adding a perk or add-on that allows him to avoid being able to down a survivor instantly, but gain a speed boost for the remainder of the stalk time be too powerful? Should he be changed at all? What are your thoughts? Thanks I’m just extremely curious.

I dont agree, I think his power recharge time is fine stock, I never run add ons on any killer

Bring the green pen and driver's license and he's wraith, nothing to see here, just another rusheable killer. Next.

Ghostface is far from perfect, he's inconsistent due to the horrible reveal system and it has an incompatible design for how the game works, that's why nobody uses him the intended way.

He's a pretty good killer, I think the reason why some think he's OP is because the revealing mechanic is pretty bad to say the least.

    "pretty bad" is quite nice.

His Reveal Mechanic is broken. Just yesterday I had the usual stuff:

Looking in one direction and starting to reveal Ghostface without actually seeing him.

    Revealing him behind a wall.

Not being able to reveal him even tho he was right in the open and nothing was blocking Line of Sight.

Just the usual Trilogy of Bullshit when facing Ghostface.

His recovery rate needs to be drastically increased. In return slightly nerf his recovery Addons. Stalking also needs to be more powerful to encourage it.

I think he's pretty good and not over the top OP though. I happen to suck with him though which makes me a little sad.

    Mid tier, I'd say.

He's very buggy, that's the main problem. Yesterday, I couldn't reveal one that was straight in the open 5m from me. I didn't even start to get the sound cue. Also, I'm not very in favor of stealth killers. Survivors' stealth has been nerfed to the ground to encourage interaction, which I agree with. On the killer side, this should be mirrored. Easily sneaking up on someone is a unilateral interaction, the antithesis of the direction the game should go in. The perfect stealth-ish killer for DbD is Micheal, imho (add-ons and M&A aside).

I think he's fine. Solid, but very far from OP. Very limited chase ability and map presence. It can be tough to get rolling on open maps with strong tiles.

With Devour Hope he is waaay nasty.

He is smooth to play, fun and strong. And if revealed, you can see where the revealer is. It can be used as a localization ability against the last survivor(s).

But the other day as survivor I couldnt reveal him standing in front of me. Was weird. Now I know its a bug.

Ghostface is really balanced to me. You can either stalk or stay invisible all game long. I'm a survivor main and I think that escaping a Ghostface is fairly doable. Playing as him is fun and playing against him is challenging.

i did come up with an idea for his stalk would like your thoughts this includes everyone let me know what you think (this did come from a post i done)

increase rate survivors become marked on base

slightly decrease durition on them being fully marked

survivors do not hear the noise notfication of them being stalked till its 50-60% done (dont know if survivors can actually get a sound notfication on when they are being stalked but just added it just in case)

    increase range of stalk

    Stalk:

when survivor is fully marked they gain the exposed status and are not able to hear the heartbeat or red stain for the duration of the mark even if GF is out of night shroud.

any perks that will normally alert survivors to killer (spine chill, premontiton etc) will be constanly on throughout the duration of the mark

GF will gain killer instinct on the mark survivor every 3 seconds while they are marked for the duration

(potential but not sure if it could work- if GF is chasing the marked survivor while in chase with that survivor he gains the bloodlust quicker then normal and reduce stun of pallets if hit by the mark survivor)

I’m a big fan of ghost face. He needs zero adjustments to the math behind his power.

What he does need is more cosmetics because they’re the best in the game.

I would agree except that players have rotational vision, when working on a gen you can swivel the cam behind you and look. Wraith has distortion in his invisibility and pig can crouch for undetectable but still can be seen. The only killer that has true invisibility (I think, not 100%) is Freddy and he has a giant lullaby that plays when he is close, still best stealth tho i think

    BillyAndStu Member Posts: 120

Nah using his power the way its intended is a good way to get run around and waste precious time. Thats why a lot of people, myslef included, use his power to get close with cover and use nurses to surprise survs with nurses. Someone alreasy mentioned this but hes closer to wraith without having to decloak. People still can gen rush him. Pre ruin nerf i wouldve said he was A tier. Now it doesnt matter how nuts you are. Gf is just another mid tier killer you have to play borderline perfect on to get a 4k.

I do like the idea of marked survivors gaining the oblivious effect. However i think the speed burst AND the low stun duration is a bit much on top of that. Stalking someone successfully alshould yield a higher reward for how broken the detection on gf in nightshroud.

Ghostface needs some quality of life changes and tweaks. Like the taking out of stalk mechanic is..literally broken. It doesn't do what it's supposed to sometimes. Tweak him a little bit and he can be perfect. I really only use him for his terror radius power rather than stalk people.

Wraith doesn't come with an insta-down and instant de-cloak built in though. Crappy analogy, next.

Ghostface is deadly if played right, I love him because you can have many different play styles with him. Whether it’s stalk, hit n run, or a mix of both and more, you can dominate high ranked survivors. I love playing all killers (but nurse because console sucks with her) and ghost face is high up on my favourite killer list.

i also like what he does with his left hand when walking

I agree with both sides of this. You are right then players have rotational vision, and I feel it seems pretty balanced not to be able to reveal him while working on a gen since your not actually facing or intending to find him. I have however seen the bug playing as both GF and survivor, where I can’t reveal him when he is directly in front of me. But also while playing as GF, Ive had trouble really being able to read the white notification markers that are supposed to reveal where he is being revealed from. One marker will be on the top left side of my screen, but the survivor will really be on in front of me to the right.

I understand this. But what about for people that actually do use his stalk ability. And if they were to take it out, they would of course have to replace it with another Power since the whole concept of killers is to have their own unique abilities and ways of handling the survivors. I agree his ability needs some fixing with bugs, and maybe he could use some new skins, but I do not feel as though taking his ability out would make much of a difference.

I love the feel of his build as well! I feel he does have some bugs on both the survivor side, and his own, as I’ve seen some in game, but when he used right and his ability is used to it’s best degree I feel he has a multitude of play styles, and I love his Mori kill mostly. I feel some of the other killers’ mori’s are good but his just makes me laugh every time. And he has an average amount of pressure, and high stakes takedown, since once fully stalked it only takes one basic attack to knock down a survivor, and bring them to the hook.

I'm not saying they would have to take it out. Tbh i only really never use his stalking because i want extra hits for points and pips.

If we are on the topic of stalking I'd say he falls just a little short on that. If we make it so he only loses 25% of his stalking as he hits the survivor being stalked, I'd say that would be great.

As of now completely 99% stalking someone and being pulled out of stealth so you are forced to hit and reset the stalk on someone is kinda weird in my opinion. Making it so he loses only portions of his stalk while hitting someone is perfect. Enough to get a mark off quickly, but not enough to sneak up and down them instantly with a tap of a button. I also forgot to mention, yes ghostface is one of the top played killers for me. he's great. One of my favorite killers to play and one of the ones i succeed with the most.

I really like ghost face, but in my opinion he is below average for a few reasons. I personally play him for a silent approach rather than stalking, tho I don't ignore stalking, there is a time and place to stalk in my opinion. He is too map dependent, many of the maps are absolutely horrible for him and some are absolutely amazing. Also he is extremely good at lower ranks and gets worse at higher ranks, more than most killers, this is due to play awareness. When paying him for a silent approach his ability cooldown feels way too long and I kinda feel forced to run two cooldown addons if I want him to be viable. Revealing him often feels kinda broken for both sides, I've been revealed trough walls even if I haven't been in line of sight at any moment, all in all rework the cooldown addons, shorten his ability cooldown and maybe add a mechanic where it gets even shorter if you manage to hit a survivor while you are in night shroud

Ghostface is just fine how he is. Strong but well balanced. The reason people complain about him is because they refuse to watch their surroundings or position themselves in ways they can see him coming early.

The reveal mechanic is buggy yes, as in sometimes it doesn't work and sometimes you get revealed through walls. But outside that, in the games where it doesn't act buggy, it's totally fine. I can reveal him consistently as survivor, and as GF I can usually avoid being revealed if I crouch the moment I hear the reveal sound effect.

If you have a problem playing against Ghostface start using Spine Chill. It pretty much negates his power completely. The moment it lights up for more than a second, you move. Simple. "But why should I bring a perk to counter 1 killer". Yea no... Spine Chill is an amazing perk that is great against every killer, stealth killers in particular. Including Spirit which people also seem to have a hate boner for only because they are bad at the game. He is also loopable just like most other killers, you just have to pay attention a bit more at loops when he is in Night Shroud.

He is buggy for both sides and his base power is pretty bad, 30 seconds on a power that can be disabled randomly because of reveal mechanics not working as intended, go figure.

Against an aware team or a SWF with comms you're still just an m1 killer.

His Revealing mechanic is extremely inconsistent and buggy, but besides that with the address book and chewed pen along side the right and efficient build I'd say he's a higher tier killer and preforms really well when mastered.

I agree with that 100%. When stalking a survivor almost to max just to be pulled out of the ability, it does put a huge gap in time where that survivor basically made his ability pointless. It is definitely in need of a tweak.

Definitely not OP. Far from it actually. However I do see his appeal, and granted he does has his strengths like: easily accessible insta-down, ability to instantly crouch to make yourself harder to see at short-wall loops, and the best stealth kit in the game, and its freakin Ghostface from Scream with some of the best sound design DBD has put out ever. I love my boy Ghostface, and he's pretty well-made once they fix all the technical issues with him.

I've actually seen some madlad ass Ghostfaces turn around when approaching a survivor they suspect of having Spine Chill and moonwalking to them so Spine Chill doesn't activate.

  • Dwight_Fairfield
    Dwight_Fairfield Member Posts: 7,093

He is neither OP or perfect. He's just broken. His reveal mechanic is completely busted.

  • thesuicidefox
    thesuicidefox Member Posts: 8,223

Which is a skillful play on the Ghostface's part, so he should be rewarded. Doesn't change the fact that Spine Chill will be 99.9% effective against Ghostface.
