Why do killers need to enter cooldown after hitting someone? And why does STBFL reduce it?
I am really confused, at least from a lore perspective, about why killers enter cooldown after hitting someone.
I mean I get why some killers do it
- Hag snacks on the survivors blood after hitting them
- Myers just likes contemplating his "creation" looking at his knife
- Oni actually absorbs blood for his power after hitting someone (although, when its full he just does a silly animation where he shakes his katana)
- Ghostface is the opposite of myers, he likes showing his "creation"
But everyone else? They just clean their weapon or shake it around a little, it's quite silly if you think about it, they would save a lot of time if they just hit survivors twice, its not like some blood in your weapon will make it more difficult to hit someone
And, going to my second question, in which way does STBFL reduce this cooldown? Why exactly does leaving a survivor alone and saving him for last reduce the cooldown?

It's better than Demi Logorgon who feels like she has to go "Reeeeeeeeeeeeeee" after every single smack.
Considering Demi Logorgon is just an apex interdimensional predator animal why in the world is it portrayed screeching off every snack.
It would literally be like if a lion was trying to take down a gazelle but decided to do the roar everytime it clawed at the gazelle or bit it

The better question is why do they bother when I'm using their bloody cosmetics, like why do they have to clean the blood while we are in a chase?

I think the attack cooldown is the Killers canonically allowing Survivors something of a chance to run/escape. They want to kill them all at the end of the day, but the Entity eats hope blah blah blah.
They're certainly not properly cleaning their weapons, because Prestiged or not they're barely keeping the things clean, Deathslinger and Wraith especially just brush a tiny bit of blood off. I think characters like Trapper might be concerned with leaving blood trails so he's taking care of the fresh blood, but that's about it.
As for Save The Best For Last, because it's a Myers teachable it'll be essentially "from" him, representing his approach to massacre. The explanation for how it lowers the attack cooldown IMO is the excitement of finally getting to the Obsession growing as you're spending time on less important victims, so you waste less time on them, but diminishing when you finally get to your Obsession and start smacking them around.

More like Ghostface likes severing the arteries in his hand. That is not how you clean a knife, makes me wince every time I see it.
I'm not really sure if you're looking for actual answers or theories, but the simple answer is that there are some things in the game which don't align with the lore but which exist nonetheless to improve the gameplay experience. The fact that multiples of the same survivor can appear in a single trial is another example.

Ghostface is wearing leather gloves, plus the sharp side of the knife is near his fingers

If that knife is sharp enough to stab someone, it's sharp enough to cut through leather easily. And whether it's his fingers or his palm he's cutting, it's still a really bad idea.

its also a reference to the movie

Okay. I don't remember that part of the movie, but regardless, my point stands that it's a stupid thing to do.

The Ghostface Killers in the Scream franchise always clean their knives like that after a kill, eg. this example from Scream 2:
Skip to the very end of the video 6 minutes in.
Though I will say that particular example in Scream 2 definitely seems a lot safer than the animation used in-game, though I certainly wouldn't know.

Yeah, wiping your blade off with your hand is one thing, doing it the way he does it in-game is the sort of thing you would do if you'd never used an actual knife before. Or if you didn't care, I suppose, but I figure even psychopaths would have some concern for their own self-preservation, since it's a lot harder to kill people if one of your hands is out of commission.

The reason they do that is just for the gameplay mechanics, just like being 2 of the same survivor in the match
Is not like lorewise the killer has to hit twice the surv to knock him down

The animation the Oni does when his meter is full or when he downs an injured survivor is a Japanese custom called Chiburi, where blood on the sword is removed in a symbolic manner.

Interesting, thanks for clarifying!

"let me just clean my knife real quick OW GOD DAMN IT I CUT MY HAND AGAIN!"

Lol, pretty much.

Some animals do it as a display of domination and threat. Demo is an animal, just one from a different dimension.
The Scream killers wipe it with straightened fingers. Ghostface literally grabs the blade and runs his hand down it.

The cooldown obviously is for balancing reasons.
It isn't realistic but realistically if a buffed guy like Trapper hits your bare back with a cleaver/machete there won't be much running for you ever again.
I think they simply didn't come up with fun animations for every killer that's why a lot of them do a similar "wipe the blood" one.
STBFL's idea originally was that you get a good bonus for as long as your obsession lives so you'd have an advantage for all game if you save the best one for last. Why a hit cooldown reduction in particular - don't know, never really cared.

why da heck she didnt grab a knife, a pan, anything to defend herself during the phone call?

Leather armor was common for a reason. You would be surprised how often leather stopped stabs... although GF isn't using that type of leather...

That's not a stab, it's a slice. When I said "if the knife is sharp enough to stab someone", what I meant was "if the knife is sharp enough to be his killing weapon of choice". Leatherworkers use knives for a reason, too - because they slice straight through leather. Especially thin leather like Ghostface's gloves appear to be (which, incidentally, as you yourself pointed out, is not the type that you would make body armour out of because it offers little to no actual protection).
