Just looking for opinion's on an optional survivor proximity chat in DBD that works within maybe a 2-3m range of another survivor

Do you mean like, a voice chat or typing out some text?

With the voice chat route, while this could be something interesting to add I feel like it's another way to be toxic to your teammates. Although it could be beneficial if people decide to be nice.

Text also could be interesting but standing still to type sounds disastrous. Whether it's wasting time/the killer finds you and you're in the middle of typing something, I just wouldn't trust it. Plus you could still be hella toxic and troll with it (I'm thinking of the kinds of people to just follow you around the map just to keep harassing you, although they're quite rare to come across).

Overall I feel like the solo survivor experience just needs improving, but I don't think having a way to talk to the other survivors is the way to achieve it.

Yep I meant voice chat and you're literally in the exact same mindset as me with everything you said, about toxicity and solo balance.

For toxicity I think like any game that's why its necessary to be optional but I do think that it could be a benefit to help solo survivor groups without being gamebreaking in the slightest as long as it has a very small range.

Just small things like for example i run sprint burst and sometimes I'm in a situation where I'm very near an injured teammate and I just have to follow behinf them until they stop or realise Im there to heal them or sacrifice my one exhaustion perk. Just little things that could really help solos

I'm glad you also realised what I did about toxicity/solo balance! And sorry, I read 'optional' as 'optimal' for some reason. Being optional would definitely be better than it being on all the time. I feel like the uses you put forward (the sprint burst/healing thing) are extremely situational. I agree it would help in times like those, but I still think the solo experience needs improvement in other aspects.

In a way I find it to be a part of DBD's core mechanics (not being able to talk to the other survivors unless you're in a SWF), which is why I really want solo surv buffing.

Just don't forget that even a little push to communication between survivors is demanding some big buffs to Killers.

I like this, but really all they could implement is more gestures to help with this. Most people use them as a means for communication anyways.

If I can't turn off voice chat then really I think it's a terrible idea.

Oh that was definitely a very situational example, just sprung to mind first since I always run sb, even stuff like if multiple survivors are going for an unhook against a proximity camping killer and someone being able to say they've bt or we'll make it. Or working on a gen with someone and saying that they should go for the unhook because youve resilience.

Apart from this I saw the idea of an implemented version of kindred for solos that could be a good idea, it's just very hard to balance a game that has such a huge range of skill between the player base I think

    Danu Member Posts: 281

I also really like the idea of a text or symbol wheel as well as an alternative and I definitely agree about the killer balance issue though I think some killers need a buff in general as it is regardless of what happens to survivor

Simple things like "Need Help!" or "Killer on me" would be nice but telling perks could be troublesome, how many perks would need to be informed ?

How to implement so many of them without taking too long to choose that people waste time, or implement too little that you can't talk properly.

I get that being able to say "I'll rescue him I have BT/We'll make it" or "Don't worry I have DS" but that could cause some troubles with that idea.

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

Definitely and i realised that as I was typing my responses that yeah okay if two people are going for an unhook and one person can say they have bt, that still means that there are at least 2 survivors in the area that are at risk to the killer but then I realised what's to stop survivors from just meeting up at the start of the matching and share perk info in advance to avoid that risk situation completly?

So yeah that could end up being completely unfair, maybe be able to assign text or symbols to the directional buttons on a controller or unused keys like a hook for "I'll save" or an exclamation point etc,

I think this would be okay as long as you could make notification silent, their animation is very short and out of the way, there's a restriction so you can't spam/over use them, and that they don't actually reveal the location of the survivor when they are use (otherwise it would make perks like bond, empathy etc obsolete and also just be too unfair on killer)

    People will use discord instead.

    Danu Member Posts: 281

Sure of course if they're swf, I'm thinking more along the lines of solos though who have absolutely no communication

  • senki527

    yes please add proximity chat

  • DwightOP
    DwightOP Member Posts: 2,328

Then we still have the same old issue of a disadvantage over swf + majority really doesn't want to talk to random kids. Imo text chat should be the only thing added

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

Text chat would never work well especially across all platforms, swf will always have the benefit over solos thats unavoidable, its more about closing how big that advantage gap is without simultaneously comprimising the experience of the player which i get is very difficult to do.

I agree that people wouldnt want to chat with random kids so as i said above, it would be optional, it all about having that balancing option available in the first place

  • Waffleyumboy
    Waffleyumboy Member Posts: 7,318

Bad idea. Swf don't need to be in proximity to chat with eachother.

  • Bovinity
    Bovinity Member Posts: 1,522

It would actually be really sick if proximity chat existed, but the killer could hear it, too.

Of course, that would never happen, and groups would just run discord anyway. But still.

Personally I wouldn't want it as it takes away the atmosphere from the game. I play solo so that would be turned off all the time. I don't want or need some 13 year old kid screaming in my ear because I didn't do what they wanted me to.

  • hippsies
    hippsies Member Posts: 22

Although it wouldn't bother me, proximity voice chat would just lead to massive toxicity and audio bullying towards killer and survivors.

Also, as someone else pointed out, it does kind of kill the atmosphere. Minus the pregame lobby, when does anyone speak? Survivor or killer? It's a game of few words and i feel like that is a big part of this game's charm.

I'll say the same thing I say about any other voice chat thread: It might be cool just to pacify some of the people that are complaining about SWF being too OP compared to solo or killer or whatever, but I only think it would be a good idea if there was an option to opt out.

I don't want to have to deal with some 16 year old squirt acting like hes 9 and just figured out how to cuss, fresh out of the CoD scene, yapping my ear off while I'm trying to play. Or some person thinking they're hot stuff blasting their rap music over their mic while I'm trying to listen to the damn game.

Also, 2 or 3 meter distance is insanely tiny and the feature would practically be nonexistent at that point. You'd have to be doing ASMR whispering into each others ears. Even Dwight's Prove Thyself perk has a range of like 4 meters, and it only really works if you're sitting on a generator right next to another survivor.

I've mentioned a few times here that it would have to be on the condition you can disable it of course, a lot of people seem to miss where i say that though dw

The small range is to limit it to have some balance, I don't mean for it to be on a swf level at all because that would't be fair, I just mean it for situations like the examples I mentioned like if two survivors are going for a hooked survivor and one has bt, even someone saying theyll try flashlight save

I think it's hard to tell what effect it would have on gameplay though unless it can be tested unfortunately, I love the idea though

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

Atmosphere wasn't actually something I considered that's a good point.

Maybe the small range could help with that and of course just disabling completely if you don't want to. The toxicity thing was the BIGGEST con I had in my head when making the post because knowing some of the community I feel like that'd be pretty common. I play ps4 so i dont have a lobby chat at all btw

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

This is in an attempt to improve solo experience, swf will be using discord etc regardless so it has no affect on them

  • DwightOP

Text chat can work very well, check out the ping system of apex legends. Solos can communicate with each other and they dont need to type or speak. It's all build in.

It could be fun but I definitely think any semblance of horror remaining will be gone with a proximity chat

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

I just had a look at it and it looks very similar to the symbol whell I suggested above if that's right? I think that'd be a great idea, I thought you meant typing as in keyboard which wouldnt work cross platform

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

That's a good point, I'd love if they found a way to improve the horror aspect of the game right now as it is, there arent many good horror like things apart from jumpscares from stealth killers and some creepier cosmetic like the clown that has maggots

I'd turn it off straight away and if the wasn't an option I'd just go into a party (on ps4) to avoid it. I hate voice chat in any game

    DwightOP Member Posts: 2,328

Typing could be a pc exclusive addition but wouldn't work for consoles very well I agree

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

Yeah, tbh I can't speak for pc since I don't play dbd or games in general on pc so I can't say what would be good or bad but it would still be nice to have a universal feature in all/most of the versions (but probably mobile and maybe switch might have to be exceptions)

Thisll remove one of swfs major advantages though allowing to buff killers to swf like levels

  • venom12784

It seems good in theory. Until you have a 13 year old screaming in your ear about how the killer is doing good knows what. Also would stop party or discord

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

Yes this problem has been mentioned about 3 or 4 times above and I've addressed it with the feature of course being optional.

I'm not sure what you mean by your last sentance but this is aimed at solos, swf will still use discord regardless so it wont affect them, theyll still use discord because there would be a very limited range in the in game voice chat

  • venom12784
    venom12784 Member Posts: 666

My bad using a cellphone and auto correct messed it up. I was saying what about party chat and discord. I don't see why bhvr should take away man power from bug fixes and updates to put in a comms system most people won't use.

Don't get me wrong it is something that I have thought about as well. I think the killer should be able to hear what the survivors are saying in they are in the proximity. I think the amount of toxicity that would stem from this would be outrageous and only make this game even more toxic than it already is.

  • Joelwino
    Joelwino Member Posts: 550

How about just seeing what perks survivors close to you have? That would be really useful

  • GraveHunter
    GraveHunter Member Posts: 328

Please no. I don't want someone to ruin my game with all the trashtalk that comes along with it.

    That's why I never played F13.

The endgame chat is already good enough.

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

Completely agree, I love the idea it's just a shame that parts of the community are so bad that it wouldn't work so well overall. It's really disappointing when you see that the community's immediate response to suggesting a communication feature like this is that it could be so toxic, especially when they're absolutely right.

I love love love the idea of killer hearing proximity chat as well, I know it would make toxicity worse and would completely remove the horror aspects but the concept is so funny

  • Danu
    Danu Member Posts: 281

Again, it would be optional and only platform that has egc is pc.
