Research Paper on Dead by Daylight
Hello everybody,
I am studying psychology in Berlin and am currently writing my final thesis, the subject being Dead by Daylight. I aim to understand whether - and to which degree - certain personality factors (such as extraversion, and agreeableness), gender and the tendency to show altruistic behaviour influence a player's role preference; namely, killer or survivor, as well as the choice of character.
Participation is completely voluntary and anonymous, and you have the opportunity to enter a draft for one of two 20$ steam gift cards.
As an enthusiastic player of this game myself since 2016, this is a project very close to my heart. I would immensely appreciate your participation.

Seems like an interesting study! I always find it fascinating and interesting when "traditional" fields take a look at something related to gaming, stuff like your study when it comes to psychology, or someone in the economic field taking a look at in-game economies and the like.

I agree with you, with video games being such a big part of the lives of so many, there is so much to discover. Not just in terms of serving the "video games are bad" narrative, but in terms of gaining a profound and nuanced understanding of the uniqueness of purpose a video game might serve as for each individual.

Very interesting idea! I was actually going to use dbd for an altruism experiment for my bio mode at the beginning of the year to investigate influences on reciprocal altruism etc but it was only for one sf lab report, the word count was too low to explain the experiment well and it was a pair project with a friend who doesnt play dbd so I just couldn't, looking forward to seeing your results!

I'd love to help! I'm actually doing a research project myself on social dynamics in Dead by Daylight at the moment - though I'm a designer, not a psychologist - so I absolutely get the fascination from an academic standpoint. Best of luck with your thesis!

It was a very interesting survey, I had fun doing it 😊 And no, I'm actually a graphic designer, but design practice does overlap a lot between disciplines, because the process and the way of thinking is very similar in many of ways.

I see that you asked the personality type questions before going into the theme. Good idea there.
It's always hard for me to chose if I like killer or survivor more... I play 50-50 and it fluctuates.

Hope the project goes well! I'm interested to see the final result. My hypothesis is that the more proud and confident players tend to lean towards the killer role because of its lack of reliance on others. I don't expect gender or age to have much to do with anything, but I may be wrong.

My Honours project? No, I'm only halfway through it. I may share it on the forums when I'm done for anyone who's interested in that kind of thing, assuming that (a) the content isn't too inflammatory, and (b) I can find a way to do so without compromising my privacy, since I'd rather not make my real identity public on the forums (there are some scary people out there).
If you mean the Rift survey, the answer is still no unfortunately, although I promise I'm still working on it. It was just a lot more work than expected, and progress has been halted for the last couple of months on account of said Honours project 😅

I am participating in this research paper as I am a learner of psychology and bouts of human mental states.
Other than that , I love helping people.

Bit annoying that there wasn't really an option for BOTH/NEITHER preference on side, since I play both. If you can work out which survey data was mine, I did pick Survivor and the 3 I selected are Claudette, Yui and Kate.
For killers, I play Pig, Doctor and Legion.
Preference in playstyles could also add to the opinion of types of people drawn to the game. I prefer the stealth playstyle, rather than a confrontational runner or chase killer.
