What is it about this game....

That attracts so much toxicity?

Recently I was bored and went through my PSN messages to start deleting some of them. It was then that I realised, probably about 90% of them were from DBD players and almost all of them were the typical “I hope you die” or “I hope you get cancer” messages. Ya know, the really ‘pleasant’ stuff. Now, I could understand this being a thing if I only played DBD online, but I don’t. I’ve played The Last of Us, GTA 5, FT13 and Uncharted 4 for years too. So what is it about this game that either seems to attract nasty people or bring the nasty out in people? It’s almost becoming like some weird cult. The amount of people that get GENUINELY hurt by having their pixels get killed in a game is alarming. I know this is a game about either surviving or being killed, but I think it’s actually got a player base made up of mostly psychopaths.

Telling people that you want them to die, or have family members being raped etc is NOT and will NEVER BE normal behaviour. It actually baffles my mind how many deviants I’m playing with or against.

I don’t remember it ever being this bad in 2017 / 2018. But since 2019 it’s becoming a rarity not having somebody message you after a game.

Idk about you, but this was a big thing for me back in 2016 already.

    I do ignore them.

But your “no different from other games” comment clearly doesn’t stand when as I said, the majority of mine are FROM this game. I know toxicity can exist everywhere online, as people love to hide behind a screen and act tough. I just find it strange that I rarely get messaged on other ACTIVE online games...

I only started playing in 2017. I think because I play on PS4, it still hadn’t developed a big player base back then. As I recall bumping into the same survivors a lot. Now, that rarely happens. So I know more players = more toxicity. I just don’t understand why it’s THIS GAME over others? What’s so different about FT13? It’s still the same concept. Survive or be killed.

Everyone needs to stop ignoring this stuff and report it. If the people who do it are punished for it enough we may can have a polite society.

Don’t worry, I do report it.

By ignore, I meant I ignore the person who sent the hateful message. Meaning, I simply don’t reply. I always report.

most of the times in this game you either lose because your teammates were trash, because game unbalance or because bugs. Since there are so many instances where you are not directly responsible for your loss, people tend to get angry very easily and throw that anger back at everyone.

But let’s be completely real here, none of the reasons you listed warrant people being told to get cancer or kill theirselves. It’s legit insane behaviour. I’ve said it time and time again. If a game gets you this angry and hateful. Stop playing. If you’re not mentally stable enough to handle losing, the problem is with you. I’ve encountered plenty of bugs and BS on this game and plenty of other games. You just suck it up and move on.

I get it on alot of games, but this one is very common. Sometimes people mention something very specific which usually sets me off the game for a week or two. Usually I don't let toxicity get to me, but one thing gets to me.

I’m sorry that people say something that sets you off.

I’m extremely lucky that I don’t have any triggers. As a lot of the things people have wished upon me and my family have actually happened to me and my family. So I’m just grateful I’m able to brush it off. I just don’t understand what drives people to be such dicks.

What boring lives they must live being consumed with so much self-hate projection.

It's an adversarial game, and people are awful when they lose. Ignore them and move on. As my wife likes to theorize: They act like horrible people because this video game is the only thing that they have in life.

I understand that. But, all those other games I mentioned are adversarial games too. I just don’t understand what draws so many toxic people to this game and not the others.

This game turns people into "us vs them" mentality. You can easily categorise people into "survivors" and "killers" (though there are plenty of people being both). So you don't have to be angry at specific players you can rant about the "enemy" side and blame them for everything wrong with the game.

And being a killer you always get these type of messages because some players don't feel like they've won unless they escape (even if the pipped). And you are not just another player like in CS or Dota or LOL. You are THE ENEMY so that's why there are toxic people. You don't get that from killers most of the time, they just do their job and forget about you.

I got told once that I should jump in a lake and drown:( and other times I get told I will beep you up:( like really it's a game :(

I used to reply and tell them to stop:) But now I just ignore them and report em:)

Thats just not true. The messages i get here rival the old school gears of war and MW2 lobbies, its REALLY bad.

Its because despite the screeching this is a competitive game. And because despite it being competitive its heavy RNG. This leads to some having bruised egos

Most aren't able to control themselves and have no real understanding of how they hurt other people. It's not really real to them, and on top of that some of them like being able to inflict pain because it gives them a modicum of control and power - which they usually don't have in their own lives.

It's also definitely about the game setting itself. This is a game where people get killed in pretty horrifying ways, and as much as people try to pretend that is nothing, it's not really. When you see someone hunted and tortured, it should have an affect on your mind and...that's what leads to the intense feelings and polarisation.

It's the competitive nature of the game, combined with fragile egos and the inability to look at their own mistakes, instead finding it easier to blame everything else. It's uncommon you come across people who think how they can play better, instead of just deny any responsibility. This results in being toxic to others to compensate. Probably other reasons, but this is a major one.

I 100% disagree with people who say DbDs community is as toxic as any other multi-player game community.

Dbd community is so much more likely to send me a death threat or complaint than any other multi player game I've ever played outside of League.

This has been the opposite for me, I get a lot less hate comments these days opposed to how often I did in early 2017, and they were often more hateful. I play on the west coast, USA, maybe it’s different where you are?

I don't think it's that bad on Xbox. If I play killer for 10 games on a Saturday I might get 2-3 messages and it's two GG and one complaint. That's about it. However lot's of t-bagging and stuff in game.

But somtimes when I drink a bit and play killer I can't play normal because being drunk, you have to change tactics or survivors will win easy. So facecamping is what I need to do in these situations, then I can also put the controller down for a fast pee or pouring a drink. After 6-7 of these kinds of games yes there are lot's of nasty messages, and being in the state I am they get lot's of nasty replays. But it is what it is.

those games are open world type and not a "competitive" type confrontation so to speak, for example in games like CS: GO, Overwatch or Rainbow 6 if I have these messages or worse, it is not a game thing, it is the type of game

Eh, I mean, I'm sure everyone's experience is a little different. I've met some equally toxic people online who play fighting games, too. And hoo boy, the early days of League of Legends were baaaaaad. So this severity is not necessarily exclusive to this game, is what I am saying.

Man I turned the messages off...and then they just sent friend requests with messages attached. I have no idea. Never really saw hate on PS4. It was way worse on Xbox and PC.

I mean, what other games do you play that allow people to freely message you? I can't really think of many because I'm on PC.

You're on console, so I'm assuming you have the option to turn off messages either way.
