OP, in the Anniversary Dev update they said that the Hidden MMR system is almost done. They've been testing it via simulation for months now (meaning, it has been gathering data from us but has not been used for actual matchmaking) and just need to polish up a few, final details before sending it live.
Ranks will then not be used for matchmaking, but you also will never again see anyone's rank except your own. At that point, rank just becomes a small, personal goal you can set for yourself.
